Male guilty of sex abuse of children - will be housed in a women's prison

I'm so sick of seeing reports like this.

The Equality Act 2010 states that transwomen (males) can legally be excluded from single-sex places for women, if it is a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim.

That applies to prison accommodation where prisoners' safety and privacy from the opposite sex should be priorities .

Yet male criminals are routinely being housed in women's prisons.

It makes no difference if the transwoman (man) has a Gender Recognition Certificate, or not.
It is legal for him to be excluded from female-only places.
So why do prison authorities continue to place men in women's prisons?

I know it’s not right, but think what his life is going to be in a female prison. Don’t forget a lot of those women will have suffered abuse.
And believe me, no one is safe in prison irrespective of where your housed.

I’m more concerned about the impact on women of having this individual imprisoned with them. So many female prisoners have abuse histories, associated mental health problems, substance dependence etc. they shouldn’t have to put up with trans women who are sex offenders

GrannyGravy13 Thu 08-Sept-22 20:38:15

Trans only prisons for trans offenders

Iam64 Thu 08-Sept-22 20:40:50

I agree GrannyGravy13
If we can’t build enough, let’s have specific wings as we do for section 43 vulnerable prisoners

Galaxy Thu 08-Sept-22 20:41:13

I am not sure that is the answer because I think the needs of transmen are very different to the needs of transwomen.

Galaxy Thu 08-Sept-22 20:42:59

I am a feminist so the safety of transmen is important to me. As far as I am aware transmen are housed in the female estate thankfully

Iam64 Thu 08-Sept-22 20:53:03

Sorry Galaxy, I’d assumed separate prisons for trans men and trans women

Galaxy Thu 08-Sept-22 20:55:45

I hope so Iam64. What that really means is a separate facility for some men. I am not particularly against that but there are many men who are vulnerable in a Male prison gay men for example.

I've no idea what his life is going to be in female prison. It is irrelevant.
Women prisoners, especially those who have suffered abuse, should not have any male people locked in with them.

Here's a link to an excellent talk by former prison governor Rhona Hotchkiss - on the effects of transwomen living alongside women prisoners.

Just seen on twitter, from T T Exulansic -

"Reminder that the reason sex is not a kind of race and so single sex spaces aren't racial apartheid is that males are defined by a unique capacity to impregnate females. Females have a right to not be subject to unreasonable risk of avoidable impregnation while they're dependent."

I visited a young friend in Holloway several times. She was a victim of sexual abuse. I know from her how female prisoners who have abused children are treated so I have a good idea how a man ( who is not officially a female) who has abused boys and girls will be treated. It won’t be pleasant.

Esspee Fri 09-Sept-22 07:42:50

I can't get worked up about abuse being handed out to anyone guilty of harming children.

FarNorth Fri 09-Sept-22 07:46:21

MerylStreep that may be so but it doesn't mean that it's fine for women prisoners to have men locked in with them.
Did you listen to Rhona Hotchkiss' talk? If not, I recommend you do so.
Here is a very short clip (21 seconds) of her making the important point about this.

Esspee I'm not concerned about this man, I'm concerned about women prisoners.
He, and all other male prisoners, should be in men's prison.

Allsorts Fri 09-Sept-22 07:55:48

The worlds gone mad. Put him in a man’s prison, shame if he doesn’t like it, think of his victims. He won’t be rehabilitated, come out and do it again. Who in heaven, sexually abuses children?

nanna8 Fri 09-Sept-22 08:04:13

What is wrong with people? This just makes me sick. I couldn't care less about this abuser but I do care about the women prisoners, many of whom will have already suffered abuse. They should sue the authorities for causing stress.

Iam64 Fri 09-Sept-22 08:09:20

MerylStreep, I acknowledge the point you’re making and my concern isn’t for the paedophile. I’m concerned about existing trauma in female prisoners being compounded. His presence will resurrect their own abuse experiences. Any attacks on him are likely to make that worse

Katie59 Fri 09-Sept-22 08:19:24

Many trans individuals are self obsessed attention seekers, they will enjoy being special and controversial, even more so if they are notorious for the crimes.
My sympathy is for the prison officers that have to deal with these creeps.

Galaxy Fri 09-Sept-22 08:22:25

That is no more true for transgender people than it is for any other section of society. These are men who have committed crimes, how they identify is of no interest to me, it is nothing to do with being trans it is to do with being Male.

FarNorth Fri 09-Sept-22 12:17:53

Many trans individuals MEN are self obsessed attention seekers, they will enjoy being special and controversial, even more so if they are notorious for the crimes.

Some of those men claim to be transwomen.

Women prisoners should not have men imprisoned with them.

Lesley60 Fri 09-Sept-22 12:26:33

I say death penalty for pedophiles and child killers and the rest should be locked up in American style prisons and the transgender could have a separate wing in a prison of the gender they were born in
I agree with the saying if you can’t do the time don’t do the crime

Bronzefield prison, where this man was sent, does not sound like a well-run place.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/HM_Prison_Bronzefield

It is where a transwoman (male) prisoner was caught drunk and having sex with a much younger female prisoner, earlier this year.
