King Charles III

I’m starting a thread so we can add our thoughts and hopes for the future. The King will address the nation at midday.

He and Camilla have my support although I know not everyone feels that way.

God Save the King.

If I was thread monitor I would ban anyone suggesting Trump as one of the onlyhe only alternatives to monarchy.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 09-Sept-22 14:48:24

Well said DaisyAnne. It was a very nasty post.

I hope Charles drew comfort from the love and support he and Camilla were shown on their walkabout, a very nice touch and something they didn’t have to do.

Yes it's an accident of birth that we arent facing King Andrew this morning. There are risks in both systems.

volver Fri 09-Sept-22 14:53:30

Oh goodness me. I'm a rampant republican. Most people who think like me are maintaining a dignified silence. Some aren't.

My personal view is that the cause of Republicanism is not furthered by ranting on about it at a time of national mourning. That would show a complete misunderstanding of the way this country operates and how its inhabitants think.

Equally misplaced is the chorus of "We'd end up with Farage/Trump/Putin". Which is just a ridiculous thing to say, and not very original.

I'll not be entering into a discussion about constitutional change on the day after this country's longer serving HoS has died. I'll just be hoping that people on both sides of the debate will show some decorum.

Thank you volver.

"I’m starting a thread so we can add our thoughts and hopes for the future."

Well I hope our new King shows better judgement than he has in the past, accepting cash in carrier bags from anyone IMO was a somewhat stupid thing to do. I also hope that he remembers that his role as Head of State means that he is politically neutral and that he needs to keep his opinions to himself, something he has struggled with in the past. I admired the Queen's ability to read the public mood and make changes eg her speech before Diana's funeral, change from civil list to Sovereign Grant and paying tax etc. I hope King Charles has the same ability but I am concerned that he might not continue to modernise the Monarchy as I'm not sure he is as "in touch" with the world and is surrounded by sycophants. If I sound rather less upbeat, that is because this is what I am thinking. I'm not sure I would want to replace the monarchy because I see little evidence that other countries have better models. I think we have been fortunate to have the late Queen because she clearly fulfilled her role well, I worry that Charles will be less successful, however I hope for the sake of the country, that I am wrong.

Oh dear.

Could someone please tell Clive Myrie that "the flag at Buckingham Palace is still flying at half past (almost)" is incorrect?

Oh, someone just told him that the Royal Standard is flying as the King is in residence!

AmberSpyglass Fri 09-Sept-22 15:12:29

Hopefully this will see the end of the monarchy in the next few decades.

Callistemon21 Fri 09-Sept-22 15:12:44

Well said, volver
There is a time and place which you recognise.

Others have not, unfortunately.

Grany

Monarchy has prove itself to be completely useless in a crisis affecting the majority of citizens in these islands. The archaic institution is incapable of reacting to the very real needs of the people. Time for a accountable elected head of state.

Not only have they failed to do anything to help in the current crisis. They have taken even more money from the public purse and continue to increase their wealth while the majority of people slide into poverty.

Who says Monarchy has prove itself to be completely useless in a crisis affecting the majority of citizens in these islands. Grany? You seem to believe the Monarchy is something it simply isn't. Your comment shows you do not understand what a Constitutional Monarchy is.

On these threads, a handful of people seem to hate for the sake of hating. There are arguments against a monarchy, even a Constitutional one, but you (and others) seem only to want to have a go at individuals. That, however, is no argument against a system thought by the majority, to work for us.

However a good King he may or may not be.
Our late Queen will/could never be replaced.
Not in this life or the next.

Our American friends have just texted,
After 70 years of calm good sense, you are now "Stuck with Chuck',

Anniebach Fri 09-Sept-22 15:48:09

Well, some of us don’t mind being ‘stuck with chuck’.

It’s wonderful how people from outside our country can have such an opinion tell your American friends to worry about their own problems and leave us to oursYammy , cheeky buggers
Charles and Camilla will do fine he’s a decent human being and Camilla will help him enormously
I like the idea of a King Charles 111 but I feel sorry for him being of an age he should be retired I think Charles Camilla William and Kate will work together as a team they seem on the same page
And I m not a Royalist or a republican just an ordinary Joe soap with a foot in neither camp

Isn't it interesting how people differ. My American family, admittedly born and bred British, do not have such a feeling about King Charles. But then, they do understand the different cultures. Sadly, most American's, while they like bits of the UK, don't understand that it is far from being a "little America".

This from a country that went from Trump to Biden?

Yammy Fri 09-Sept-22 16:18:39

To be honest I had to work out who Chuck was, if they had said a right Charlie I might have got it.
Americans do seem to like their one-liners. I hope Charles proves the sceptics wrong. Though I don't envy them their task at their age.

Anniebach Fri 09-Sept-22 16:21:30

Given the presidents the Americans have voted for since the
Coronation of the Queen

I think that's the idea BlueBelle. As much as we can know. Of course, there is also the indefatigable Princess Royal and also Prince Edward and Sophie. A small team but probably better for that.
