King Charles III

I’m starting a thread so we can add our thoughts and hopes for the future. The King will address the nation at midday.

He and Camilla have my support although I know not everyone feels that way.

God Save the King.

Grany Fri 09-Sept-22 13:52:45

Our next unelected head of state, PrinceCharles, has too many unanswered questions about his finances and associations. Time to choose an accountable head of state, time for a Republic. #AbolishTheMonarchy

If we don’t #AbolishTheMonarchy we will never have real democracy and equality. This archaic institution will continue to block democratic process and promote elitism. It’s time for change

British people are subjected to relentless pro-royal propaganda from birth. It is brain-washing. It's time for us to wake up and put an end to the absurdity of the corrupt, expensive, and pointless British monarchy.

merlotgran Fri 09-Sept-22 14:00:32

Nice try, grany but right now I’m proud to see the Royal Standard fluttering above the car carrying Charles and Camilla to Buckingham Palace.

God Save the King.

I am not a royalist but had huge respect for Queen Elizabeth.

I believe we are seeing the beginning of the end of the monarchy now.

Rather than being intelligent as biglouis stated Charles is far from clever (Since when has a B in history and a C in French indicated intelligence? Is it even University entrance qualifications?). He has done nothing to make me feel he will be an asset to this country. As for his previous mistress, now wife, they both behaved disgracefully and the fact that previous monarchs were in the habit of behaving promiscuously is no excuse. The more important the person the more important it is that they set an example.

The recent scandals regarding accepting carrier bags full of cash and cash for honours seem to be being ignored by so many on Gransnet.

Charles is not fit to be King, his now wife is not fit to be Queen Consort. The monarchy needs to come to an end.

What merlot said

Long live the King ??

Monarchy has prove itself to be completely useless in a crisis affecting the majority of citizens in these islands. The archaic institution is incapable of reacting to the very real needs of the people. Time for a accountable elected head of state.

Not only have they failed to do anything to help in the current crisis. They have taken even more money from the public purse and continue to increase their wealth while the majority of people slide into poverty.

vegansrock Fri 09-Sept-22 14:10:52

What’s with all the God save the King stuff? save him from what exactly? I’d like him to change the national anthem as it’s a meaningless dirge. We don’t say “God save Liz Truss” do we? She may be more in need of divine intervention. No one sings the national anthem these days apart from some football matches and then they change the words.

Why not start your own thread on the merits of the U.K. becoming a republic rather than hi-jack this one?

HousePlantQueen Fri 09-Sept-22 14:13:53

I am not a flag waving monarchist, but had respect for the Queen, and wish Charles well. As for a republic; FPTP has given us a minority Tory government, and we all know what happened with a referendum last time. We would probably end up with a goon like Farage as president.

Grandma70s Fri 09-Sept-22 14:21:05

It’s curiously moving to see the crowds outside the Palace greeting the new King, shaking hands with him.. Many of them near to tears or actually crying. Lots of goodwill.

Esspee Fri 09-Sept-22 14:22:19

Grany is simply expressing her views. Who made you thread monitor?

I am definitely not thread monitor.

Grany expresses her views eloquently on every Royal thread.

It is my opinion that a thread started to celebrate our new King is not the place for republican sentiments.

If Grany was to start a thread on the U.K. becoming a republic it would be purely about that and lead to interesting debate.

Galaxy Fri 09-Sept-22 14:32:51

Er the OP asked for our thoughts for the future. Mine would be that I hope the monarchy ends with Charles. It probably wont but my views are as valid as anyone elses.

All views welcome on this thread.

I was moved by the size of the crowd of well wishers outside the palace. As Nicholas Witchell said, republicans may gather more support now the Queen has died but right now it’s heartening to feel the support for the new King and Queen.

aonk Fri 09-Sept-22 14:34:10

For the poster who would prefer a republic presumably with a president who do you like best? Donald Trump or Vladimir Putin?

FannyCornforth Fri 09-Sept-22 14:34:21

I agree that it’s the beginning of the end of the monarchy, rightly or wrongly.
I’m a reluctant monarchist I think; I just love tradition and loathe change.
The Cambridges are carrying a huge weight of expectation.
It doesn’t seem the kindest or most sensible way to go about things - piling all of that responsibility onto unwitting or unwilling participants.

Galaxy Fri 09-Sept-22 14:36:16

Thanks merlotgran. You have no idea how reassuring I find it when people say all views welcome thanks

nanna8 Fri 09-Sept-22 14:36:46

I think the monarchy will remain in the UK for some time yet. Not so much other countries but then people don’t like change so who knows?

Speaking of Putin…
Funny story I heard on LBC last night from Iain Dale.
It concerned a meeting with HM, the then Home Secretary David Blunkett (and his dog) and Putin.
Blunkett’s guide dog actually growled at Putin (very unusual for a guide dog)
HM commented, ‘dogs do have rather fascinating instincts, don’t they?’

Really? Since when has judging people merely on two exam results indicated any understanding of the ability to well.

What a nasty little post on a day like today.

Galaxy Fri 09-Sept-22 14:40:09

Oh thankyou Granny it always startles me when someone says that as I often feel grumpy grin

JaneJudge Fri 09-Sept-22 14:41:21

well his walk along the line outside Buckingham palace was modern, people not talking to him but filming him with their phones!

JaneJudge Fri 09-Sept-22 14:42:02

The wings on your naked body have softened that grumpiness Galaxy so try not to worry

Galaxy Fri 09-Sept-22 14:45:10

grin That's going to sound so weird to people who havent read the other thread.
