I’m starting a thread so we can add our thoughts and hopes for the future. The King will address the nation at midday.

He and Camilla have my support although I know not everyone feels that way.

God Save the King.

As I said before, the arguments I have seen about a Constitutional Monarchy are simply hate dressed up.

Then you haven't been looking very widely then. To dismiss a serious constitutional discussion as simply hate is just childish and a not very intelligent comment. A bit like those reality shows you dismiss.

However, as I said earlier today a discussion of alternative systems of government for our country is inappropriate on the day after our HoS has died. Even more inappropriate is implying that there are no viable arguments against a constitutional monarchy, and anybody who wants an alternative must be simply a hater.

To be clear
I was agreeing that you would find any alternative system would cost at least the same or probably more. That has to be the weakest of arguments

I have seen some prejudice and hate on threads but also some reasoned arguments which are worth consideration.

Thank you Iam

The final quote of the speech brought a lump to my throat -

May flights of angels take thee to thy rest

That was truly beautiful sodapop

Did he say that? Shakespeare wrote “Flights of angels sing thee to thy rest”.

It brought a tear to my eye, and I'll swear that Charles had one in his eye, too.

It was a fine speech with a perfect ending.

Sing, sorry

NotTooOld Fri 09-Sept-22 22:36:27

It was a great speech - and didn't he look kingly? Well done that valet!

I am sure those who have withheld from putting forward reasoned arguments today might see it as unfair. I should have thanked them for doing that.

However, others have not withheld from some pretty nasty comments that are nothing to do with any sort of reasoned argument.

He looked as if he was working hard to control his emotion towards the end of the speech. Poor family. I hope they can fit getting some rest in.

Lexisgranny Fri 09-Sept-22 23:05:06

Unfortunately the King and his family are unable to request that ‘the privacy of the family be respected at this sad time’ - they just have to get on with it. We watched Charles and Camilla looking at the flowers outside the palace, then saw a shot from behind and realised just how close the cameras were to them. This plus all the mobiles in the crowd must have been quite overwhelming 24 hours after a bereavement.

Wasn’t enthusiastic about Charles becoming King, but his dignified address at a difficult time was very impressive and on a superficial level, he has grown into his looks.
I think he looks better now than as a young man and at one point in the address, he suddenly had a look of Earl Mountbatten, his mentor and a very handsome man (if arrogant and a kingmaker)

Well, this American sends her condolences to the royal family, citizens of the UK and the Commonwealth. Queen Elizabeth was an amazing ruler and will likely be a hard act to follow. I admired her very much and she is responsible for my interest in the royal family. I have learned much about the UK since then. Today's announcement has peaked a new interest in me for learning more in dept about Wales.

I was moved by Charles' speech and even teared up. I admire him being strong while performing his duties today.

I think he will do a good job as King, for as long as his subjects continue the Constitutional Monarchy and think that William and Catherine as the Prince and Princess of Wales is brilliant.

I send my love to you all from the other side of the pond.

Re Camilla being ‘Queen Camilla’ or ‘Queen Consort’.

Nicholas Witchell was trying to explain the difference.

QE11 was ‘The Queen’ because that was her role, born into it as such.

Her mother was also ‘the Queen’, but he was at pains to remind us that was only because she was married to the king, not her birthright.

I think the Consort part is being emphasised now because of the past, with the difficulties associated with Diana, and the fact that when Charles married Camilla, many would not have liked the thought of her being Queen.

As time passes, views and circumstances change.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see her referred to as Camilla, Queen Consort, as she was often referred to as Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

As far as Charles is concerned, she is his Queen, and no one can argue with that.

BigBertha1 Sat 10-Sept-22 07:33:18

The King's address was perfect in my view. I think he will be a good King and follow his mother's exemplary example.

lemsip Sat 10-Sept-22 07:43:19

while the new King expressed love for harry and meghan, he added . as they build their lives overseas No way back for them here then. not with a book which will be hot off the press now the queen has gone.

lemsip Charles’ reference to Harry and his wife is being widely reported in the UK press as being ‘reconciliatory’, and ‘sending an olive branch’

Blondiescot Sat 10-Sept-22 07:53:10

We were watching his speech last night and my daughter and I both agreed that it's difficult to hear 'King Charles' without automatically adding 'spaniel'! And I don't mean that in any disrespectful way.

I’ve just skimmed the Daily Mail. It’s continuing it’s anti H and M campaign, most unnecessary and unkind.
My impression from King Charles was he deliberately mentioned love and support for Harry and his family because, like most parents, he loves his son and wishes him well.

Why not just take it as he said it. I thought it was a nice touch.

I am64. Kind of crossed posts
It will continue sadly, possibly without a “respectful” break…..

lemsip Sat 10-Sept-22 08:00:40

FannyCornforth It can be reported however,

I'm noting that he said ' as they build their new lives abroad

meaning no way back.....

no need to try and alter what I've said!
