First arrests under the New Police Act preventing freedom of speech

At least 2 people have been arrested for carrying signs that protest against a monarchy.

Whatever you think about the crassness of this behaviour, we should all be very, very worried about this curtailment of freedom of speech - a necessary pillar to a healthy democracy.

25Avalon - you are always going to get bad apples in any profession, but you cannot tar all police officers with the same brush.

Unfortunately for the police force, so many of whom do a wonderful job, it’s the bad experiences of them that we remember. For me, hearing as a teen, that I should have followed the ‘flasher’ I reported to his home so they'd know where to find him!they’d no

Surely they could have just separated them?

Well, yes, that sounds like the sensible and proportionate thing to do.

I agree, if it could be guaranteed that others would not have got involved. Who knows what might have happened?

If others got involved then they could call the police.. oh, hang on... smile

Days and days of blanket coverage, roads closed, appointments cancelled, holidays curtailed - and all at a time of serious economic and social problems in this country. All these things affect everyone, even people who are not monarchists.

Yet someone holds up a piece of paper saying "Not my king" or shouts "who elected him?" and this is seen as grounds for warnings or arrests.

DaisyAnne Fri 16-Sept-22 11:14:42

But you are just a few Eloethan, and the many are generally pleased, give or take the odd closure. You have freedom of speech on here and the Republicans are certainly making full use of it.

Appointments have been cancelled because they can be. The reason they have jumped on it is that the NHS is in dire state. It is not the Queen's fault for dying it's the governments for the general down-grading of all our lives but their "mates".

I’m actually surprised at the amount of animosity towards the police on Gransnet , where we are I’m sure mostly law abiding citizens.

On one hand we want laws upheld to protect us, yet when we as individuals get caught breaking them the police are facists. There are a few bad apples but mostly they do uphold the rule of law, they need more funding, so does the NHS, Social Services and Education.

Galaxy Fri 16-Sept-22 12:07:40

I am not sure that's what was being said. I dont think the police are facists if I break the law.

JaneJudge Fri 16-Sept-22 12:15:36

been shoplifting again galaxy?

Oh, I love the last line which states that 'he has since been de-arrested'!!!! What a total farce.

I am totally anti-monarchist, horrified at present at all the upset going on in the country for ten days over the death of a 96-year old. But each to their own, just do not go to official proclamations, etc. Do wish people would, maybe, show their respect of my views as I do of theirs. Would prefer to see money being spent on flowers left to die on pavements could be donated to food banks, where it could do so much more good.

I am however, very concerned that the government has eroded so much of what we have long taken for granted of our right to freedom of speech.

Ohhhhh, your post is a breath of fresh air! I'm personally sick to the entrails of all the schmaltz associated with this wealthy woman's death. And totally agree with the suggestion that donations to food banks would show far more respect than rotting bunches of expensive flowers.

I’m actually in a rather confused state about many things at the moment. There are certain things in my life that anger people that I am involved with politically so I have to keep quiet about them. I was chatting to a fellow dog walker today and said it’s been a weird few weeks hasn’t it and I then felt very awkward because I was scared to mention the Queen’s death in case she was a Republican so I went into my usual verbal diahorrea. I was thrown off a political Facebook page because they were being venomous about the royal family and, much as I dislike her, someone said something very distasteful about Truss and I said it should be removed.

I was scared to mention the Queen’s death in case she was a Republican.

This phrase actually makes me sad.

I'm a vegetarian and people apologise to me for mentioning sausages. I'm not going to self combust just because somebody mentions sausages.

Neither, as a Republican, am I going to self combust if someone tells me that they are sorry that a public figure has died. If they start about how the person who has died was really a saint and that all republicans are devils, then all bets are off.

But don't think that republicans are unfeeling extremists who will immediately fly into a rage if you mention the Queen. We just have different political views to you.

One of my Facebook political friends is being very venomous towards the royal family at the moment because she just assumes that everyone in her group agrees with her. And a few years ago I mentioned to someone in another group ( this was pre covid and at a meeting) where a member of my family worked and she just got up and walked away from me and didn’t speak to me again for the rest of the night. This was after I’d made a point of sitting through a very long and boring council meeting the week before to support her.

I think republicans come in different shapes and sizes.

For me, it is the institution itself that I would like to see, ultimately, abandoned in favour of a republic. But I have no animosity towards individual members of the RF.

I felt sad watching the decline of Elizabeth from her previously sturdy self to the frail and thin old lady we saw in that last photo' of her meeting Liz Truss, still smiling in spite of probably feeling unwell. But I am not grieving nor mourning, though I am aware she is - as it were - the end of an era. I'm also aware that she did what she considered to be her duty in a way that we will probably never see the likes of again. I don't think Charles has, or will have, her graciousness.

I don't understand the venom because I don't feel it myself. Above all else, Elizabeth was a human being.

JaneJudge Fri 16-Sept-22 18:18:53

I feel like Dickens but I have met the King twice and I actually liked him but he is smaller than me.

I don't quite know why, but your comment about Charles being smaller than you, tickled me. grin

I've met a couple of 'noteworthy' people in real life and have felt the slight shock of realising that they are not as tall as one imagined!

MissAdventure Fri 16-Sept-22 18:53:33

I tend to let the other person bring something potentially contentious, and try to agree with at least something in what they've been saying.

I wonder if the fear was about upsetting a possible Republican or of the reaction Maybee might get - or even a bit of both.

After being on here - where we have the protection of distance - I would steer clear of anyone who had strong republican views.
