Rory Stewart mentioned Kwarteng in one of his podcasts. From memory he said he was highly intelligent but ( and this is my interpretation of what he said) is very dismissive of anyone else’s opinion because he’s so superior intellectually than they are.

Kwartang is refusing to publish the Economic forecast by an independent body ahead of Friday’s mini-budget.
Does that mean it is too dire?

So todays news is
The government is considering lifting the ban on live animal exports.
Lifting the ban on importation of foie gras
Lifting the ban on the importation of animal furs.
Lifting the ban on the importation of hunting trophies like dead lions etc.
Apparently the bans are too “socialist”. Since when has the ban on cruelty to sentient beings become too socialist!I think bans are extreme and also not necessarily effective. It does sound as if some are saying, "I ban because I know better and must insist you only have my choice".
I also think that banning creates illegal trade or workarounds.
Education and persuasion are the ways to change views. Some will still not agree with you, but sometimes we have to agree to disagree.Well, good luck with that.
So by that logic we should lift the ban on fox hunting, farrowing crates, puppy farms, and so on.
Sometimes you think you cannot be surprised anymore but there you go, it happens again.
I queried whether banning is always appropriate. I'm not keen on dictatorships. Your reply is something I would expect from the far-right.
No Whitewave, because I query a ban on "A" doesn't mean I am pro (or anti) bans on the rest of the alphabet. What an extreme and illogical form of argument. And what a nasty one, to be honest. Puppy farms - seriously?
We live our lives surrounded by bans, DaisyAnne. Usually in the form of laws introduced to enable the smooth running of our society and to prevent exploitation and cruelty.
In order to better understand your thinking perhaps you could give us an example of what you consider to be an unnecessary or unproductive 'ban'?
Nothing in this mini budget benefits pensioners, those on benefits, the working and middle class (if there is such a thing now) only those who are wealthy.

Sterling has dropped to a 37 year low against the $ USA. And on Friday when they hear the mini-budget, it will drop further.
I started to transfer funds from the UK to France today. For £1000.00 I would get 1,098 euros. The lowest for a long time. I stopped in the hopes that the exchange rate might improve following the "this is not a budget"

Ed Dave purposely set the bar super low with regards to tremors.
We need to drill to ascertain viability.
Burying our heads in the sand and relying on gas pipelines from thousands of miles away (some from countries with dubious credentials) needs reviewing.
Capacity for energy is not going to lessen. We need to source alternative options.
What about the chemicals used in the water which will find their way back into the aquifers and thus eventually into our water supply? Adding to the existing pollution.
This is worth a watch if anyone thinks the Labour Party will bail us out of Tory wickedness

What worries me is that now the Tories are embarking on the ‘buy now, pay later’ economic strategy our children and grandchildren will be shackled for years by repayment of national debt

They won't be shackled for years to come because of the 'national debt'. There is nothing to 'repay' apart from the normal payments on bond interest and bond redemption. This has been going on for centuries and has no adverse effect on the general population. It should be called 'National Savings' not 'debt'.
The rest of the 'debt' is purely government created money. (see my numerous posts on this topic) It doesn't have to be paid back by anybody.

Well us pensioners are getting a 10% rise next April annsixty that should keep the wolf from the door for one faction of society. Let’s hope other vulnerable groups do well financially soon. Truss could call it ‘levelling up’.
Huh .... disabled on legacy benefits and NOT entitled to either the Cost of Living payment OR the Warm Home Discount which I have relied on for years to keep me going ..... they are doing a good job of trying to get shot of us 'useless eaters', nasty bastards .....
Let’s lift bans on dog fighting since people will do it anyway - ditto illegal drug taking and any else we’ve got bans on.

We do live our lives with laws put in place and they are ones the government feels the country wants and/or will tolerate. That still doesn't mean the reply was a reasoned or reasonable one. But I had said that and that is all I really want to say. I am certainly not going to throw myself on what will no doubt, from the tone of that comment, be an oncoming train.

The RSPB is now voicing concerns about government actions. I believe they are normally politically neutral.

It’s because they’re breaking the rules about how ministers spend our money

Ok if the reversal of NI means so little to the poorest why was there such an outcry on here about the increase unfairly affecting the lower paid?
Because even a small increase is a big proportion of their pay
Please correct me if I’m wrong. Wasn’t the increase in NI to help pay for better social care? And did I read that the government were going to put millions of pounds into social care. So, if they can do that why did they feel the need to increase NI payments? I’m losing track to be honest. I thought a government won on a manifesto and then had 5 years to implement that manifesto. All we seem to get is a constant change of PM, change of cabinet, new policies, u turns on those policies. What is going on? Why are the electorate ok with it?
