Would the UK have noticed otherwise?

I watched the footage, and some of the live coverage of the Queen's funeral on Monday, but despite winding back and forth and checking over and over, I couldn't see one second of coverage of the European Royals, all of whom were present, and seated in the South transept. From my perspective, here in Germany, the royal families of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Luxembourg and Monaco are just as interesting relevant to Royal-Watchers and the yellow press as the British monarchy. But the general public and the media in the UK seem to be totally unaware that there are other monarchies out there.

The visiting royals may not have been aware that they had been snubbed by the British media, as they probably had their own press following them.

Now I read that Queen Margaret of Denmark caught Covid and has finally managed to make the BBC aware of the fact that she was there. That's a great souvenir to give her to take back as a memento of the day. Good job she has a great sense of humour like her cousin.

I am not a royal watcher or particular fan of these people, but I am aware that they exist. As I say, I watched the arrivals at Westminster abbey again and again and was shown the British royals, the commonwealth heads of state, the US president and his wife, the ex- and current Prime Ministers of the UK, but neither during the service nor before, did I see any mention of those European royal family members (who are household names here in Germany.). Sorry if I'm wrong and I blinked and missed them.

Here is the article about Margarethe getting Covid with, finally, a photo of her and the others. They even have to be tagged to explain who they are.

Anyone who tested positive for Covid the day after the funeral won't have caught it at the funeral but would definitely have taken it to the funeral!
Not to say she didn't catch it in the UK; it depends when she arrived here.

Baggs, ordinary flu does not close down Care Homes so that the residents can't see their relatives or have visitors. My Mum will be very lonely now her Home has been put back in lockdown. However, Covid will more than likely kill some of her more vulnerable visitors so more care is needed.

The European royals were mentioned but it was a funeral for Queen Elizabeth so it wasn’t surprising that they continually mentioned her and her immediate family. I would be surprised if at any funeral they spoke more about the attendees than the the actual deceased.
Also the comment about Queen Margaret getting covid, it has an incubation period of 7-10 days so she more than likely had it before her symptoms became apparent.
Whatever you do, don’t let the facts get in the way of a good UK bashing.

Well said, She77 !

A state funeral is not the time to be focussing on mourners present. This was about The Queen and her family.

Irismarle Sat 24-Sept-22 12:55:30

I think it would have been nice to identify the foreign royals and perhaps explain what if any relation they were to the Queen. I found the commentary often pointless, saying things like ‘the abbey is really filling up now’ or identifying the few people I did know like Macron or the Bidens while not explaining who others were who were clearly quite important and had been allocated prominent seats. I don’t see it would have been more disrespectful to say who they were than just stating the obvious.

Queen Margarethe of Denmark cancelled celebrations planned in Denmark to celebrate her own 50 year ascension to the throne to be able attend the funeral of Queen Elizabeth. In view of this the invitation to her daughter in law erroneously sent by royal household should in my opinion not have been withdrawn.

I saw the king and queen of Spain and they were mentioned. The royal families from other nations were probably covered by their own press and for their tv.... I think the BBC did an amazing job. The coverage was amazing. I am really not bothered if other royal families were not shown. I also find it odd that someone would dissect the coverage by watching over and over again to see if they were. What difference has it made to your life by doing this?

Lindy Sat 24-Sept-22 14:17:39

I agree with you, we needed to see all the others too. I'm not bothered about the politicians! Princess Alexandra was there but didn't see her and there was no mention of her. I thought she was close to the Queen. Had my daughter Google her to see if she was still alive. She was my favourite when I was a child.

hugaby Sat 24-Sept-22 14:18:50

I agree with you Elegran, if the Queen of Denmark tested positive the day after the funeral, she wouldn't have caught it in the UK, it could be said she was a carrier and could easily have infected others around her

I’m sorry it’s upset you grandtanteJE65 but I don’t think the commentators meant to be disrespectful to your royals.

I never thought to look for any other royals though I did notice Scomo walking into the abbey. I’m not that into them really though I loved watching all the pageantry. The Scottish side of the ceremony was very interesting, too.

It was our Queen’s funeral NOT spot the celebrity!

Wong Sat 24-Sept-22 14:38:07

The funeral was about our Queen and our Royal Family. I would not expect to have our Royals put centre stage if it was a funeral of one of the European royalty. Criticism for the sake of it I wonder......?????

I have a Danish friend who is mad about the British royals and she tells me many Danish people are. Apparently, they dont go crazy over their own toyalty because it would cost a fortune in security and that would be the downfall of their monarchy. Years ago my friends mother used to see the present Queen of Denmark regularely on her bike on her way to work. I get the strong impression that people in other countries have more sense than to worship royalty as though they were a deity as some people in this country do. I can take, or preferably leave royalty but we all have to pay for their security and etc.

Too busy Tring to get shots of Mr & Mrs Markle for goodness sake stop giving them coverage they love it! Remember - they crave privacy NOT!

Joplin Sat 24-Sept-22 15:23:57

Biden was 14 rows back because he was late - delayed in traffic near Marble Arch. He should have accepted the invitation to go by bus, like most of the other leaders. The bus was on time.

I know. They just crave publicity!! I just wish they wouldn't try to shoehorn themselves into every thread we have, even when it's not about them!! You just can't escape them.... ?

Nannashirlz Sat 24-Sept-22 15:28:45

Perhaps it was because it was our queen’s funeral and not who’s sitting where. Maybe that’s why as the attention was on the our queen whom it should have being. Since when do you go to a funeral and point ppl out. Who’s sitting where no matter who they are. Also on our news it did show The Eiffel Tower blackout and Australia photo and also other countries lowing flags and speeches etc. I can’t comment on papers as I don’t buy I’m saving the trees lol

Perhaps he'd watched the movie "London has fallen" and foolishly believed there could be such conspiracy.

I had to look for ages before I found Sarah Chatto and her family. She was very close to the Queen

Being Danish I can confirm that my Danish family know as much about our royal family as I do. I love to follow them as my husband used to work indirectly for the RF my family do too.
Queen Magrethe correctly cancelled most of her 50th anniversary celebrations and the ones which went ahead were all very low key.
She is a wonderful queen and very down to earth can be seen shopping in Copenhagen's walking Street with a drink in her hand. You may have seen a photo of her shopping with both a drink and a cigarette in her hands.

silverlining48 Sat 24-Sept-22 16:43:27

Woukdnt catch ours a drink and ciggie doing their shopping on a Main Street. Just imagine.! grin

We frequently watch Al Jazeera these days - the BBC is so introverted you’d be forgiven for thinking there is no news other than that in the UK and the US, well maybe a little of Europe and a disaster area, but very limited.

pamdixon Sat 24-Sept-22 17:23:20

As far as I understand it (sorry if someone has already said this) the BBC said that they didn't have time to name everyone who was arriving for the Service and that if you looked on their website you could see who was arriving and when. Out of respect to our Royal Family, they were not announcing all the Heads of State, Kings and Queens of each country, etc etc as they arrived.
