I was prepared to ignore the coronation, but for Charles to insist that his now wife be crowned is beyond the pale in my opinion.
I realise there are a huge number of royalists on Gransnet but do any of you agree with me that she should not be crowned?

Oh dear, I give up! More heresay . It's high!y unlikely that Charles spent the night before his wedding at the home of Camilla. ,But it makes an ooh aaah story and I'm sure Netflix will report this event,so it must be true! People find it hard to forgive? It's over 40 years ago, lots of people weren't even born then or were very young children and simply don't care!

Very true Jaberwok, but maybe none of those refusing to forgive have ever done anything wrong. Spec and beam.

Elizabeth, the Queen mother, was always known as 'Queen Elizabeth'. Camilla, Queen Consort, will - and should - be known as Queen Camilla. In the 20th Century, Queen Alexandra and Queen Mary were also Queens Consort. As far as I know, the last consort to be crowned King, was William of Orange whose wife, Queen Mary, was the heir to the throne.

William and Mary were joint monarchs. The first and last. So William was a King Regnant not Consort. All wives of Kings are Queens Consort as opposed to Queens Regnant ( ruling in their own right) but are referred to as Queen so and so.

I think Camilla has sufficiently "redeemed" herself from her role as the "other woman" in Charles and Diana's marriage -- and if the Queen desired Camilla to be Queen Consort, then crown her and get on with it. She and Charles actually preceded Diana and Charles, and this human narrative was painful for all -- not the least of which are William and Harry. Life is messy, even for the Royals.

A lovely story Daftbag, but you omitted the ending;

‘And they all lived happily ever after’.

?

Calendargirl Sat 15-Oct-22 07:30:49

I always thought that one reason Camilla was not considered suitable as a wife for the future king was that she had a ‘past’, i.e. she had slept with other men.

The fact that Charles had probably been ‘sowing his wild oats’, as advised by Earl Mountbatten, for years is ok though.

It’s all laughable nowadays, how these things mattered 40 odd years ago.

Contrast to Harry and Meghan, divorced, openly living together at Nottingham Cottage, allowed to stay together with the Queen before they were married…..

If then was now, I think Charles and Camilla would have married in the first place in their 20’s, would have had their own children and hopefully it would have been ‘happy ever after’.

Ah well, we will never know.

Palace to quietly drop Consort from Queen Camilla’s title

It's worth remembering that Harry said he 'loved Camilla to bits' and she wasn't 'a wicked stepmother'. What has happened since he said that and which version should we believe?

Parsley3 Sat 15-Oct-22 10:28:12

The reality about having a monarchy is that we have no say in who becomes King or Queen. Apparently this is a good thing because if it was left to the great British public we would make bad choices. However, my monarchist friend has no time for Charles and doesn't want him as King. She is in a real pickle. I don't care what Camilla is called as I won't be pledging allegiance to either of them. It is such a sexist tradition anyway and needs to be amended. At least Charlotte is being spared the humiliation of being pushed down the order of importance in favour of her younger brother. Anne just had to suck it up.

Anniebach Sat 15-Oct-22 10:37:53

Shock, horror, she had sex before marriage, unlike Diana who
for some reason knew she had to keep herself tidy, wonder why

I take everything that comes out of the mouth of Harry or his wife as unlikely to be true. In particular we want a private life. I’m not even a monarchist, but I think Harry has disrespected his country, my country, so I’m not a fan. Please don’t pile on me and call me a hater, I’m simply stating my legitimate opinion. As regards Camilla, whatever she did in the past, it’s long gone, so let’s get on with living in the present and not the past. As I said, I’m not really a monarchist, but as we’ve got one, which we have, she should be crowned alongside her husband.

maddyone Sat 15-Oct-22 10:40:16

Or as volver would say, let her wear the posh hat, just like him.

volver Sat 15-Oct-22 10:48:30

??

maddyone Sat 15-Oct-22 10:55:03

Haha, but there is a problem. There’s controversy over which posh hat she should wear
grin

Crown Camilla GREAT Britain deserves no less

volver Sat 15-Oct-22 11:41:27

GREAT Britain is just a description of how big it is compared to lesser Britain.

It's about size. And as we all know, size doesn't matter, it's what you do with it that counts. wink

Volver....
Would it not be about what made it GREAT in the first place

Is there anyway that the Queen Consort can be side stepped to takeover as PM?

She would be 100% more effective than the present one.

I believe the rôle of PM could be better filled by one of the corgis right now.

'fraid not faye17.

Its great as opposed to lesser. Not great as in "wonderful".

Look at the name in other languages ...

Grande Bretagne; Grossbritannien; etc. (All Big Britain)

maddyone Sat 15-Oct-22 12:49:31

Great Britain is a geographical term. It means great, as volver says meaning big or bigger. It includes England, Scotland, and Wales (the UK is those three plus Northetn Ireland.) Even if Scotland or Wales were to become independent, the description Great Britain would still apply. The countries are England, Scotland, and Wales as said before, and can be independent of each other politically but the geographical term still applies.

Photos of the late Queens corgis being cuddled and playing with Sarah Ferguson are all over Twitter this morning.
