Talk about extraordinary moments in history.....

Charleygirl5 Thu 20-Oct-22 14:07:30

Grantanow there were grumblings among the backbenchers when there was mention of getting rid of it. I think we may be okay until April and then our state pensions will just rise with inflation, or worse be frozen for a year.

Zoejory Thu 20-Oct-22 14:11:04

Gone but not forgotten. What a ridiculous farce this all is.

I'm guessing Rishi will be next in
But I forsee nobody will be satisfied until we get a GE

JenniferEccles Thu 20-Oct-22 14:12:50

I’m sure her instinct was to not be a quitter, but as happened with Boris, I fear her hand was forced.

I feel sorry for her too. We all know politics is a cut throat business but surely no one would wish that humiliation on her.

So much for not being a quitter yesterday

Evidently the 1922 committee finally made her understand that she had no choice.

Jaylou Thu 20-Oct-22 14:17:08

She now holds the unfortunate record for the shortest term in office for a PM, the previous record was 119 days, and then only because he died.
Penny Mordaunt could be a good candidate, Jeremy Hunt has ruled himself out.
If there was a GE, Labour wouldn't win on merit, they would get in power because the Conservatives would lose. Maybe time for Lib Dems to come to the front.

Wonder if the next incumbent will consider themselves a success or a last (hopefully!) resort. Desperate stuff indeed.

Yes and with a huge pay packet!!

Former PMs don’t get pay or a pension. What they can do is claim up to £115,000 for their ‘expenses in carrying out public duties’.
Coincidentally, previous PMs claimed almost exactly that amount ( apart from Theresa May, who is still an MP, and claimed a mere £57,000)

Curlywhirly Thu 20-Oct-22 14:22:17

I'm so glad she's gone, and not liking to see anybody humiliated, I thought she saved face with the reason she gave for going . So who is next for PM? My money is on either Sunak or Mordaunt, please, please let it not be Johnson.

Curlywhirly Thu 20-Oct-22 14:24:53

Of course, my preference would be a General Election and hope to get rid of the Tories completely!

25Avalon Thu 20-Oct-22 14:31:01

Talk of Boris Johnson coming back to be a contender. Can’t see him even thinking about it unless they go down on blended knees and beg. Even then it’s the wrong time. Tories are on the way out. He’ll wait until the election after the next one.

Happysexagenarian Thu 20-Oct-22 14:35:38

How about a coalition government, all three parties working together as one. Could they behave like adults for a change and play nicely together? It might display a sense of solidarity in our political system as far as the rest of the world is concerned. At the moment we're a laughing stock.

It has always puzzled me that we elect the party that will govern but have no direct say in who the Prime Minister is. Time for political reform perhaps.

As far as the current situation goes I think the next PM will probably be Rishi Sunak, if he even still wants the job. Why would anyone want it now! But I'd prefer a general election.

I read, I forget where, that when Thatcher was thrown out the Tories felt sorry for her and agreed to pay her a salary of £100k pa. I've since checked up on this and you are correct, there is a maximum expense allowance of £115k for every year if they chose to claim. Blair and Major both claimed the maximum for the last 2 years. Blair has apparently claimed £1 million since leaving office.

25Avalon Thu 20-Oct-22 14:48:26

The Conservatives can’t work as one together so how on earth could they work as part of a coalition government. Anyway why would Keir Starmer want to when a load our victory is looming?

25Avalon Thu 20-Oct-22 14:48:50

Labour not load victory

Thank you, JE, my views too.

Surely a general election is the only honourable way forward.

Blossoming Thu 20-Oct-22 15:01:59

I don’t feel sorry for her. I feel sorry for all the people having to suffer the damage she’s inflicted on the economy.

She brought the humiliation on herself, her hand was only forced because she had put herself into a completely untenable position. The fracking vote was the final straw, what on earth were she and the cabinet thinking of strong-arming their own MPs. Unprecedented disaster.

Liz Truss will be the answer to pub quiz questions and Trivial Pursuits for years to come!

CatsCatsCats Thu 20-Oct-22 15:26:40

I don't feel sorry for her one bit. Her hypocrisy when she sacked KK for carrying our HER policies was just breathtaking.

I was amazed she was elected to PM in the first place because I'd long regarded her as a particularly stupid woman, whose ignorance about the natural world was telling when she was Environment Secretary.

Not sure which of the following holds the most truth regarding Liz Truss (though I'm leaning towards the latter):
a) the Peter Principle which states that people are promoted until they reach a position where they are no longer competent; or
b) the Dilbert Principle states that they are promoted because of their incompetence.

Calendargirl Thu 20-Oct-22 15:27:49

She was probably relieved to be going, to me she was nearly smiling at times.

“Phew, thank goodness, I’m outta here!”

Charleygirl5 Thu 20-Oct-22 15:33:30

Has she resigned as an MP also?

Lucca Thu 20-Oct-22 15:46:21

To those who feel sorry for her, I take it you’re ok with those who have lost out financially due to her lack of sense or empathy ? The fact she and Kwai didn’t even do consult cabinet about the 45 tax thing?

I thought that too. She looked a lot happier and less stressed than on previous occasions.
She deserved to go because she messed up on the biggest issue of all. Was it entirely her own fault, I'm not sure?
Looking for plus points I felt Liz Truss conducted herself fittingly when the Queen died and I admired her for keeping her children well away from the political scene.
