If Johnson were to be elected the Privileges investigation would not be an issue because the Privileges Committee has to report to the Commons and the Tory majority would simply vote an adverse report down so no consequences for Johnson whatever the report said. We would be stuck with him pending a General Election.

I try to engage in sensible,polite conversation on gransnet usually. However, on this occasion, can I just say that Johnson has shot his bolt. He lied, cheated, broke rules and served himself and his rich friends. Who could want such a bad person in charge? Labour might only say what they would do, but if you can't judge the Conservatives on what they have done then shame on you.

This seems appropriate at the moment . I do hasten to say that it is not just UK politics that is in this state.

I think that the Tories have collective amnesia. They have erased the debacle of Johnson's time as PM and somehow hope the the public will too. It's incredible.

RichmondPark1 I think you are being optimistic. Johnson seems to mesmerise the Conservative party, I think it possible that he could be reelected party leader.

However, I hope it is unlikely. For all he still has his supporters in the party and in the country, he also has a large body of people, including in the party, and especially in the country who would never vote Conservative, if he was in charge.

I would also not put my money on the Conservatives losing the next election. If they get the right person into No 10 this time and they take charge and pull the party together, they could turn the whole thing round. There are still two years to the next election and political memories can be short.

Labour are in the lead at the moment because they have got the 'anything but the Conservatives, they are a shambles vote', not because they have won people over to wanting positively to vote for Labour because they have the better policies (they may have, but that is not the main or even partial cause of the swing). In the same way the Conservatives won the last election with such a landslide because of the large 'anything but Labour, with Jeremy Corbyn in charge' vote, not because of their policies.

I feel sick at the prospect of Johnson coming back.

^Witnesses who are working with the Privileges Committee tell me there are no shortage of people willing to testify against Boris Johnson. Risk is that they become even more determined if he returns as PM, which could make the whole fiasco much more embarrassing for the party.^

According to "private" conversations with various 'others', Johson is ready to throw his hat into the ring - again - as he believes he can reverse the fortunes of the Tory party.

Looking recently at Microsoft News, there are enough individuals gagging for his return to make it feasible, something that will not have escaped the notice of Mr Man-of-the-people Johnson nor his supporters.

I imagine Johnson is already writing his autobiography in his head. He was unfairly dismissed from the party, only to return and save its fortunes and finally get Brexit done.

After Truss' resignation, he abandoned his holiday and hot-footed it back to the UK.

He was clear in as much if Boris Johnson does not keep to his Enviromental Green pledges in the manifesto, and kick out Mr,Rees Moggs’ Bill which removes a lot of environmental protections he will not vote for his son.

I expect Liar Johnson would swear blind that that was his intention, then let Rees-Mogg's bill go right ahead once he was back in power.

His family holiday ends today as already planned. They are all booked on a British Airways flight at teatime. Although I have read he is weighing up his options regarding a quicker return. Private jet? Wouldn’t Carrie object? Mind you as Sadiq Khan keeps his air miles up at top notch perhaps she will acquiesce.

At least Johnson senior has more sense than the current crop of MPs tweeting their support for Johnson e.g.

What was he even doing on a family holiday? He's already had several family holidays this year, parliament was in session and the country bumping along the bottom.

Dominic Cummings tweeted earlier this year something along the lines of Johnson backed Truss knowing that she was likely to implode, giving him the opportunity to stand again. In July this sounded ridiculous. Obviously he knows how things work.

What worries me is the nearly 180,000 Tory members voting yet again. Their general dependency to select well and thoughtfully is now based on their overwhelming endorsement of Truss!!!Have a dread they might decide “loveable, funny, clever, badly treated Johnson “ would be a good idea. Also, some cry “he gave us this great mandate”. No mention of Corbyn who gave him an open goal.

If the result of the Tory MPs' vote is 1 Sunak 2 Johnson then Johnson would refuse to stand aside for Sunak, thus triggering a Tory party members' vote which Johnson would likely win. If it's 1 Johnson 2 Sunak I wonder if Sunak would stand aside?

In a word - yes.

The Privileges Committee stuff is irrelevant. If the Tories re-elect Johnson they would use their majority to vote down any negative report, otherwise they would face choosing another PM or be in serious trouble with their party members.
