Boris Johnson - a warning from history

I was derided just a little when I suggested that there had been a “cunning plan” aka conspiracy to elect the worst possible Tory leader (known as Truss) to be such a disaster that Johnson would look good by comparison and the party faithful would beg him to come back.
Even in these hallowed halls of Gransnet I have seen, but will not name and shame, some who inclined towards this view and lo! it is come to pass that BJ is indeed trying to get 100 MPs to back his candidature.
I have never been more depressed. The inevitable consequence of the last 6 weeks should be a GE but slippery BJ has wriggled out of situations before.
This is not the jolly buffoon with the rumpled hair that Nadine Dorries clearly wishes to ruffle further, the bumbling giant with his shirt needing tucking in.
Don’t be fooled.

I have never been fooled. I dont know about the whole plan theory but I have no doubt why Johnson trashed Sunak and supported Truss.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 21-Oct-22 09:07:32

I am and never was a Mr.Johnson fan.

According to news reports this morning Mr. Johnson is on 51,
Mr.Sunak 40 along with Penny Mourdant on 17.

Boris is very popular with most of the electorate though whether he can garner the necessary 100 MP votes by Monday lunchtime is entirely another matter. There s so much in fighting and horse trading Maw it’s unpredictable.

It is beyond depressing. I've just told OH that if Johnson becomes PM again, I'm leaving the country!

I think you'll find that you are, once again, deluding yourself Ug.

LizzieDrip Fri 21-Oct-22 09:15:22

Maw, I too posted on GN my belief that this whole dreadful fiasco has been manipulated, and that Johnson would return like a knight on a white charger to ‘save the country’. I too have read and heard people calling ‘bring Boris back’ and have found it difficult to comprehend their thinking. Like gas-lighted victims of psychological abuse, it’s as if they are somehow drawn back to their abuser. Moths to a flame. On reading that there is even the slightest possibility of Johnson returning, I too have never felt so depressed about our country. I echo what you say Maw, do not be fooled by this evil man - please!

dragonfly46 Fri 21-Oct-22 09:17:20

I question that Boris is still popular with the majority of the electorate as I am pretty sure the majority are totally sick of the Tory government.
I have voted Tory all my life but will not do so at the next election.
The fact that Boris is on holiday while parliament is sitting says it all.
He is popular with the Dorries of this world and the blue haired rinse brigade but not the rest of the electorate.
We need a GE to get rid of all the chancers in the present government.
I too am totally depressed Maw.

There have been numerous Conservative MP’s on various news items over the last 18 hours saying that their inboxes are full of support from constituents for Mr,Johnson.

As unpalatable as it is for some, there are people on the street who still see BJ as one of them he appeals to those on the fringes of politics due to his one of the blokes persona.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 21-Oct-22 09:20:19

I will not vote in the next election unless there is a credible independent standing (keeping fingers crossed, as I have someone on mind)

volver Fri 21-Oct-22 09:20:55

Boris Johnson has never been very popular with "most of the electorate". Ever.

Urmstongran Fri 21-Oct-22 09:21:14

The polls this morning show much higher support for Boris than Rishi Sunak.
That’s if we believe what the pollsters tell us.

No, he isn't, but "most of the electorate" won't get a say.

Where are these polls please? Who is presenting them?

When Johnson said 'Hasta la vista' he meant it didn't he? Even if he's never meant anything else he's ever said.

I overheard a man in the pub last night saying that he'd vote for Johnson and the Tories as the economy is in a mess. Someone pointed out that if the economy is in the mess then it's not Labour's fault as they've not been in power for 12 years. His answer was, 'Yeah, but Labour are the elite.'

If people really think like that then who knows what can happen.

JaneJudge Fri 21-Oct-22 09:30:47

I actually agree with you. He's one of the lads, salt of the earth according to a lot of men I work with who aren't particularly bright and the reason they believe this rubbish is because of what is printed in the sun newspaper

JaneJudge Fri 21-Oct-22 09:31:25

sorry my reply was to grannygravy13, it took out the quoted post for some reason

It’s beyond depressing that we are forced into this situation. It really is about time we reformed our electoral processes.

Definitely the press have an influence on some.

We also know some extremely wealthy folks, who couldn’t stomach a Labour Government and would vote for Mr,Johnson as they see him as the only candidate to stand up to Mr.Starmer and thereby the Conservatives would not suffer a total wipe out in the next election.

There is nowt as strange as folk

Lovetopaint037 Fri 21-Oct-22 09:42:01

Been banging on about this for weeks. He supported Truss for no other reason than he knew she would mess up and there would be cries of misgivings over having got rid of him. There is no end to his ego trips. Also is he still to face an investigation about him misleading Parliament. Just when we think it can’t get worse the prospect of him standing against Sunak makes me sick to the stomach. Saw a Daily Mail headline suggesting that but the editor is awaiting a peerage from Johnson! How I hate that paper.

Blossoming Fri 21-Oct-22 09:43:03

Private Eye has it right.

Witzend Fri 21-Oct-22 09:43:14

I very much doubt that there was any conspiracy. IMO it was much more likely to be the cutting-taxes agenda they voted for. Dbro knows one party member - not the ‘retired colonel’ type but a tradesman - who told him he voted for Truss because he liked her figure! You couldn’t make it up.

Since Sunak got 43% of the party member vote (IIRC) I don’t believe either that it was a case of all-pervasive racism, as has been suggested more than once.

They will, at the next GE.
Which could well be Sunak -v- Starmer. Now that might be a close call in two years.

dragonfly46 Fri 21-Oct-22 09:52:50

They are showing on Twitter how MPs are voting and it would appear that Boris so far has the majority.

So so depressing.
