Boris Johnson - a warning from history

I was derided just a little when I suggested that there had been a “cunning plan” aka conspiracy to elect the worst possible Tory leader (known as Truss) to be such a disaster that Johnson would look good by comparison and the party faithful would beg him to come back.
Even in these hallowed halls of Gransnet I have seen, but will not name and shame, some who inclined towards this view and lo! it is come to pass that BJ is indeed trying to get 100 MPs to back his candidature.
I have never been more depressed. The inevitable consequence of the last 6 weeks should be a GE but slippery BJ has wriggled out of situations before.
This is not the jolly buffoon with the rumpled hair that Nadine Dorries clearly wishes to ruffle further, the bumbling giant with his shirt needing tucking in.
Don’t be fooled.

I had lunch with two lifelong Tory voting friends today. Both said that they wouldn't vote Conservative if Johnson is PM due to the partying during Covid whilst others made terrible sacrifices. They also said that it was not only the partying, but the lies told about it afterwards that broke the camel's back.

They seem totally disillusioned with the Conservatives.

That sounds like a very sensible reaction whilst she was at work.

I spent a good amount of time in the supermarket looking at the headlines in the different newspapers.

The idea that BJ and Sunak might buddy up clearly came, and ONLY came, from the Daily Mail. Times and Telegraph - seem to be hinting at Sunak pretty strongly. Express - behind Boris on grounds he had a mandate.

OK, from what I recall: Guardian - "Tory Tribes at war" The "I" "Sunak leads Johnson"

Mirror - picture of bloated looking BJ on holiday and very anti.

Sun - our beloved Boris.

I've been very depressed at the idea of BJ back, I don't think he'll make it.

Equally depressed as young bright women on the till saw me scrutinising the papers and raised an eyebrow. I said I'm looking at the different papers reactions to BJ. She pointed out the one with BJ as aubergine (The Star as in "ontpageNewsLatest NewsBoris Johnson
Aubergine Boris Johnson back from Caribbean holiday and ready to replace Lettuce Liz"
and said it was funny.

I asked her what she thought, sadly I got the "Oh I don't understand all that kind of thing" (and meant it, not just being polite) as in, "its not relevant to me they are all the same etc)

We will be the laughing stock of the world if Boris gets in again. So depressing and a total mess.

Out of the frying pan into the fire, if Johnson is elected by the same MPs who sacked him what hope is there for the UK.

Fleurpepper Sat 22-Oct-22 20:01:11

But he is guilty of so much wrong doing, and still under criminal investigation.

Being on holiday in Barbados (eg very far away), when he is still an MP (he was on two other holidays whilst Parliament was in recess), when he should be in his Consituency working for his Cosntituents, and in the House, doing the job he has been elected to, and paid for- also makes hime guilty!

Are there any GNs who are in Johnson's constituency?
I thought you could remove your MP if he/she was not doing the job properly.
Please do us all a favour and apply this rule.

oh that would be absolutely brilliant! Please.

Constituents can't remove a sitting MP. They have to be found guilty of wrongdoing.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recall_of_MPs_Act_2015#:~:text=Instead%2C%20proceedings%20are%20initiated%20only,resulting%20in%20a%20by%2Delection.

Oh dear

Sunak supporters are asking the Johnson supporters to prove that they have over 100.

Love to see such a United political party??, and this before the next leader is decided.

Prentice Sat 22-Oct-22 16:30:54

Callistemon probably better if none of us confidently predict anything at all in politics. In fact, if this was a political thriller, the present situation, readers would condemn it as too far fetched.

I notice the daily mail have coverage of Boris and Carrie getting off a plane with two ghosts

That sounds interesting JaneJudge is it Halloween already?
grin

I am as sure as I can be (so not very?) that Johnson won’t get the leadership.

If he does there will be absolute chaos in the Tory party.

It is going to be bad enough with Sunak who is loathed by a large amount of Tory MPs

I'm daren't comment as I distinctly remember predicting that he would never become Prime Minister.

For those who are unhappy about the potential return of Boris Trumpty why not email your MP.
They are receiving a lot of mail on the subject and will let them know not everyone sees this possible return as a good thing. Au contrair mon ami!
Very easy to find email addresses online.

We email our MP about everything. Last reply was telling us how good a job Truss was doing. This was received a day or so before her resignation. We have a special drawer for them.

?

Whitewavemark2 Sat 22-Oct-22 15:23:04

Like you annsixty I am full of rage to think we may have to tolerate such an apology for a human.

I fervently hope that the sane side of the Tory party refuse to work with Johnson.

I have come very late to this thread but I cannot believe that any sane person would want BJ back in charge of anything.
I am so incensed by the thought that I am almost incoherent.
I imagine he and his very superior looking wife are already planning Christmas at Chequers with all their family and wealthy hangers on enjoying a mammoth and expensive time at our expense.

marmajam Sat 22-Oct-22 12:00:41

This is what the media is reporting. Don't forget the media is very right wing. What's in it for them? To line up with the rich for money money money. Remember the election? The right wing press won that and defeated Jeremy Corbyn.

silverlining48 Sat 22-Oct-22 11:32:30

I do agree it’s probably not much help. but still think it’s worth letting them know.

You might as well whistle at the moon as expect Alan Mak to take notice of anything that departs from the party line. He's great at turning up for a photo opportunity but a complete waste of space for anything else.

Our MP wrote to my husband after partygate that Johnson was a ‘disgrace’. She is now publicly supporting Johnson. Has she no scruples?

I'm sure this is why they say politics is a dirty game.
To be expected unfortunately.

silverlining48 Sat 22-Oct-22 11:17:07

This is all so Trumpian, because the orange one is also looking to return too. God or whoever, please help us.
Let us not forget that Hasta la vista was Boris’ final farewell.

As for children in first class put them all in there, so we battery chickens get a bit of peace even if the seats are super uncomfortable ?

I was almost pleased to see that my Red Wall horrid tory MP listed as supporting Sunak. grin
