He’s got a lot on his plate right now. He’s definitely doing things differently to Boris. “Focusing on domestic issues”.

I was reading today (forget where) that the problem with Sunak is that he has such little experience, nor political acumen, that he is not really up to running a rounded government.

And remember he was only accidentally over-promoted to Chancellor because Sajid Javid resigned over interference from Cummings which he wasn't prepared to accept.

Sunak is too young and inexperienced to be PM.

Sunak is 42. William Pitt the Younger was 24 when he became PM. Blair and Cameron were both 43 on becoming PM. Age is hardly a key criterion.

The Guardian. Rafael Behr?

Part of the explanation is Sunak’s lack of experience and interest in any aspect of government other than finance. He was a banker before he was a politician and, aside from a stint as a bag-carrier at the communities department, his ministerial rise was a vertical ascent through the Treasury.

Yes I read that, but also something else as well, still not to worry, I think his lack of experience is self evident in his decision making thus far tbh.

Rafael Behr takes no prisoners does he!

"Rishi Sunak is good at not being Liz Truss". That made me smile.

Typical Behr. Behr was named political commentator of the year at the 2014 Comment Awards - an organisation which has had its share of controversy.

He also went on to say that Sunak should've recognised the opportunity to appear on the world stage... " Even if Sunak couldn’t feel any moral urgency about the climate crisis he might at least have sensed the expedient statecraft in appearing to care alongside Emmanuel Macron and Joe Biden."

Ouch!

Because of the divisions within the Commons - not to mention the nation - Sunak is in that unenviable position of being damned if he does, and damned if he doesn't.

He knew exactly what he was letting himself in for.

This is a ridiculous decision to have made to not go to COP.

For this to be his first forced u-turn is very poor judgement.

There are only a limited amount of u-turns you can make before you are seen as being useless.

But Blair and Cameron had been in politics for a lot longer than Sunak.

Well it's becoming their trademark.

I just wonder what the rest of the world thinks. It does matter.

He knew exactly what he was letting himself in for.

I'm not sure he did. Which makes it even worse.

Some in the party thought he was not up to the job. Perhaps he's not perceptive / savvy enough.

Did I misunderstand the news last night or was the King not even allowed to make a speech at his own reception, even although he knows so much about this issue?

I heard Sunak with the " The King thinks..." business.

Alie2Oxon Sat 05-Nov-22 09:44:31

I seem to have missed any news on that!

Have to go out, but anyone know more?

Preventing the King from going to COP or even expressing his long felt views at his own reception is a huge own goal and missed opportunity .

PM Sunak appears to lack ant political antennae.

Daisymae Mon 07-Nov-22 08:18:07

Now Sunak is making a speech today at Cop27. Surely his words will have a hollow ring? He has been forced to attend mainly I guess because Johnson's attendance will make it seem as if he is still PM. I don't think that he is at all convincing.

MayBee70 Mon 07-Nov-22 15:43:15

His interview on Sky News just now: managed to include the benefits of privatisation, Ukraine, migrant crisis…

GrannyGravy13 Mon 07-Nov-22 17:16:00

The PM has just been rushed off of the stage in the middle of his speech, according to many posts on Twitter?

MayBee70 Mon 07-Nov-22 17:20:42

Just seen it. Why no mention of it on the news?

Makes you wonder what the problem is here?

Smileless2012 Mon 07-Nov-22 17:28:39

I hope we find out why he was rushed off before he'd finished his speech. IMO having said he wouldn't go, regardless of whether or not I agreed with his original decision, he should have stuck to his guns.

Chopping and changing isn't a good look and doesn't inspire confidence.

I think it might have been his earlier speech to the Forestry Leaders Committee

I agree with you Smileless. Perhaps he changed his mind when he found out Boris was going? Perhaps he wanted to ensure a message was sent to all attendees .... ‘Remember, I'm in charge now’.

Oh I am sure that's why Sunak went to Cop27 Urms, he couldn't let Johnson swan about as if he was still PM. With apologies to those of a sensitive disposition, but I did laugh when I read Johnson described as "the turd that just won't flush"
