Will anyone miss twitter when Elon Musk achieves his objective to destroy it?

grannydarkhair Fri 04-Nov-22 20:15:16

MerylStreep I’ve read differing accounts of where the $44 billion came from. What is agreed in most of the articles is that EM could have bought Twitter with only his own money, still has x amount of money left. Different articles claim different sources for some of the $44 billion.
Bottom line for me as I said, much though I enjoy using Twitter, I think about what else this money could have been spent on and despair.

Elon Musk didn’t put up all the money. The next largest share holder is Saudi Arabia, although some say they are the largest share holder.

No I won’t miss it, I’ve never used it.

I am not sure his intention is to destroy it. He may do that accidentally but am not sure that's his aim?

maybe he just wanted to send it into space?

I miss Great Britain before Murdoch destroyed it

I use Twitter a lot more than other sm platforms. Primarily for GC issues, but also for news - local, national and international. I also follow pages about wildlife, astronomy, history, architecture, art, books and writers.
As others have said, it’s easy to control what you see (thankfully). EM has already sacked several executive post holders and says he wants to slim down the overall numbers employed. He wants to either/both get rid of a lot of the blue tick holders and/or start charging them to have an account. Blue tick holders are accounts with huge followings, so obviously bring a lot of traffic to Twitter.
I don’t think EM is set to destroy Twitter as such, he has said in interviews he has Asperger’s, and this is why he is often perceived as being “different” (other words may be substituted). I think it’s too soon to say if things will “improve”.
What I do think is obscene is that one man can spend $44 billion (and still have goodness knows how much left). I feel like weeping when I think what this money could have been spent on.

Not remotely.

henetha Fri 04-Nov-22 18:24:38

I joined it years ago but was immediately contacted by ...er..... undesirable people.
So I've never used it since.

Mastodon is the software which a number of individual groups use. Each group can have its own rules and can be more or less strictly moderated. Trump's social network site used (and maybe still does use) Mastodon software.

Probably not me. I was an early adopter of Twitter but it's gone right sown the pan since the early days.

I've just signed up for Mastodon as an alternative.

BlueBelle Fri 04-Nov-22 17:56:22

I signed up for it years ago but never “got it” and didn’t really have a clue how it worked so never did get to use it and so won’t miss what I never used

kircubbin2000 Fri 04-Nov-22 17:47:52

He seems to be making a mess of it, almost as if he doesn't understand it.

Yes growstuff the block facility is a bonus along with being able to lock your account to limit access.

I don't understand this question. What makes you think he wants to destroy it? I thought he wanted to improve it, not destroy it.

You are following the wrong accounts

You don’t only see posts that you follow. You others that twitter decide for you

We make recommendations to make it easier and faster to find content that contributes to the conversation in a meaningful way, such as content that is relevant, credible, and safe. This means you will sometimes see Tweets from accounts you don't follow.

It's easy to block anything you don't want to see.

Yes, I’d miss it. I’m in a few local interest groups, I follow some charity pages and it’s great for up to date traffic news.

Twitter is the cesspit of the earth

MiniMoon Fri 04-Nov-22 16:32:43

It won't have any effect on me. I have never used it.

Prentice Fri 04-Nov-22 16:32:01

No, have never even looked at it.

Chestnut Fri 04-Nov-22 16:30:55

Is he going to destroy it? I thought he was going to try and improve it, or is that the same thing?

I will miss it, I scroll through most mornings.

I have learnt things, I have read books that have been recommended by book bloggers, been to restaurants that I have read about along with keeping up with what’s going on in the world that MSM ignores,

I feel the same. I use Twitter for the same reasons. It's a way of communicating with people and finding out about events in a way which wouldn't otherwise be possible.

Ilovecheese Fri 04-Nov-22 14:28:57

Politicians seem to use it to break any news so yes, I think it would be missed, but a new platform will take its place quickly.
