Thank you 25Avalon for the good news that JRM is likely to lose his seat next time. He may well be a good constituency MP but his performance on the front bench leaves much to be desired. I hope his successor will be a better all rounder.

Rees-Mogg = US far-right anti abortionist. 'Cult of death'
(36 Posts)Jacob Rees-Mogg Says Abortion Rights Are A 'Cult Of Death'
Jacob Rees-Mogg has said abortion is a “cult of death” and would not agree the right should be protected in the case of rape or incest.
Speaking in parliament on Monday, the former cabinet minister said the number of abortions was a “modern tragedy”.
It came as MPs were debating a petition which has called for abortion rights to be included in the government’s new UK Bill of Rights.
Rees-Mogg said this was not necessary as there was no majority in parliament to change the law as it currently stands.
But he said his view was life began at the point of conception where there was “a new genetic entity”.
Asked by Labour MP Stella Creasy if he would support the right of women to choose to have an abortion were they a victim of rape or incest, he did not say yes.
Rees-Mogg said: “I think the destruction of life is wrong.
“I do not believe that we should say that a new life should be destroyed. I do not believe that that is the right of the state.
“This is about destroying life. This is the cult of death. It is the great tragedy of abortion, and it is considered normal.
“The extraordinarily high number of babies that are destroyed is something that should sadden us all to the depths of our souls.”
Rejecting the petition’s argument, Rees-Mogg said it was both “wrong constitutionally” and “much more wrong morally” because it “prefers death to life”.
Speaking after the debate, Creasy said: “If you think we don’t need to codify in law that women have a human right to choose to have an abortion, Jacob Rees-Mogg just argued against women who are victims of rape or incest having a right to have one.
“Women deserve equal rights. Whoever is in government.”
The petition – which has had 167,065 signatures – asked the government to include abortion rights in the legislation in the wake of the United States Supreme Court overturning ‘Roe vs. Wade’.
“Abortion rights are healthcare rights; not just for individuals who do not wish to be pregnant, but also for those who do,” the petition says.
“For ectopic pregnancies, to finish a natural miscarriage, or if mother or foetus’ life is at high risk. There are a multitude of other reasons to seek an abortion and this should be protected as a right to choose.”

I am not in favour of abortion as contraception, but I totally accept that is the female’s right wether or not to continue with a pregnancy.
This ^
To be honest, I don't think JRM knows how he would react if his daughter was raped and then became pregnant. I was always more against abortion than for it (although I did not judge anybody else for their choices) but come the day we were going to give birth to a child with terrible congenital problems, we chose not to go ahead with the pregnancy. I felt really guilty but I knew I was doing the best thing for our child, our other children and us. I surprised myself.

I have the perfect solution - all men get a vasectomy (which are reversible) plus agree to pay child support since the moment the the pregnancy test is positive
Germaine Greer though of that ages ago! She said all men should deposit sperm with a sperm bank and then have the op. When they wanted children they could use the banked sperm

We should be very clear about the situation here. Abortion outside the 1967 parameters is still a criminal act which carries the possibility of a life sentence. Attempts to have it made a health and not a criminal matter and to have it part of human rights legislation have been blocked by Tories. Anti abortion groups funded by far right Christians are becoming more active and JRM is not the only Tory MP who doesn't like the law as it stands. The over turning of Roe v Wade in the US has encouraged anti-abortion activity in this country. www.refinery29.com/en-gb/abortion-criminal-offence-uk
Actually Grantanow he’s very good as a constitutionally MP. The previous MP, Dan Norris (Labour) was also very good but useless in his new role as WACA Mayor for 3 authorities. The constituency boundaries are changing again and I don’t think JRM will get back in and I’m sure he realises that. Maybe that’s why he’s sprouting off his controversial personal views whilst he has the opportunity.
Rees-Mogg was also Minister for Brexit Opportunities and he seems to have failed hopelessly at that. He's a waste of space as a politician.
I don’t think JRM has a snowball’s chance of repealing the Abortion Act which is enshrined in law.
We should not confuse our country with the USA where their legislative system is totally different. The Supreme Court overthrew the federal abortion laws on the grounds of constitutional law. It is now for each state to decide. Some are for and some against and pass their individual state laws accordingly. It means if you want an abortion and it’s not allowed in your state you move to one where it is. Not very satisfactory I agree, but we are not in a position in the UK where one county will permit it and another won’t.
No, I do not agree Oreo. Read the comments on here. Read all the horrible things JRM said - seriously think about what it was like before legalised terminations were permitted for all (not just a priviledged rich minority).
Even by opposing the idea of abortion NOT being part of Human Rights means that he would be one of those that would try very hard to overthrow the existing legislation on this matter.
Terifying what is happening in so many USA states. It COULD happen here - if we let people like JRM make such decisions.

Who on earth voted for this man? His views are not acceptable to women. This is interesting -in 1920s 15% of deaths in women were through illegal abortion

What JRM wants is for women to die just so he can feel the law is morally acceptable. The law doesn't cause abortions it simply makes them safer.
Presumably women voted for him as well as men. They know what he stands for. So women have to decide for themselves if they think his views are acceptable, not all be lumped in together.
I profoundly disagree with what he thinks but I choose to believe that he is convinced that what he says is true, even though I don't believe it is. Life doesn't begin at the moment of conception. I don't have a view on the point of law because I don't know enough about it.
I agree too Oreo.
Quite so Oreo.

I think this has been a bit misrepresented. Ok Rees Morgan did say all of those things being a devout RC with 7 kids but if you read in full, he said the right to Abortion was covered by the Abortion Act already in force so it didn’t need to be in the new Bill of Rights. He wasn’t actually denying women the right but was very forthright in his anti abortion views.
Yeah, but this thread is really to have a go at him🤣 and not to consider the facts of the matter.
I agree with you.

He is dangerous
Another bigot. Thank God we are not a backward Catholic country.
Frankly, with whats happening in the USA, I think we as women need that protection. He is a dangerous and bigoted man.
another who thinks that if it were his daughter who had been raped, "Arrangements would be made".
While half of humanity are condemned to bear in pain and suffering the children of all humanity no male deserves a say in whether a pregnancy should continue.
Mogg not Morgan

He probably makes his daughter wear a chastity belt. Poor girl, I feel sorry for her.
He is detached from reality it is bizarre!! How would he feel if his daughter was pregnant due to rape. Surely he would sing a different tune then !?
What an odious man!
It will have to be a trumpet band because men can all blow their own if they think UK women would stand for that
Zoejory
Irresponsible Ejaculations sounds like the name of a band.
What are responsible ejaculations?
