Soft power

While I am not mad about the Royal family, they do give the Country a degree of soft power around the World and to a degree keep the countries of the commonwealth onside. So I am bothered by Harry and Megan appearing to want to do all they can to destroy the monarchy for money. It is up to us the subjects to decide whether we do or don't what a monarchy or a republic not a third rate actress who couldn't make in Hollywood and a very dim Prince.

Lucca Tue 06-Dec-22 23:01:05

“A third rate actress”. Who says, plus could you do any better ?

She earned well from a major role in a long running series. Not every actor can be Oscar winning.

I’m confused by the OP ? Is it just another opportunity to talk about the Sussexes because other thread reached 1000 ?

PS I am not an avid m and H supporter (I have to say this every time😂)

Actress is always used in such a bizarre way in these discussions, with low level contempt. It's not as if it's the equivalent of drug dealer or mafia boss grin

VioletSky Tue 06-Dec-22 23:11:52

Tbh I lost respect for the royal family before I even heard of Megan Markle

Not sure they can even compete with the damage the royal family has done themselves

Pro tip:

If you don't want to be geld accountable for your behavior, don't engage in bd behaviour

Quite a few royals need to hear that

Galaxy Tue 06-Dec-22 23:18:22

That's quite a difficult instruction to say the least.

MM is of course a “Actor” actresses were abolished years ago

Soft power?

Perhaps at one time.

But now - not so much.

This star is slowly waning into oblivion.

The press and gossip mags have printed so much stuff about them, they should be entitled to put their side of the story. Both sides spin the story to their own advantage. Those who say they should be quiet should say the same to the media who print stories and photos of them.

I think you’re right. America seems to be losing interest, the Netflix series hasn’t been mentioned on CNN which I read each day, or if it has it hasn’t made the headlines at all. I suppose there’s only so much to say, and with no contact likely from now on, it will burn out for lack of new material.

volver Wed 07-Dec-22 07:32:21

You know what the implication of "actress" used to be. Some people still think it's a put-down, it seems.

Has anyone done an analysis of those who are vocal about how bad M&H are, and those who think Ngozi Fulani brought it on herself and was trying to cause trouble?

That Venn diagram is close to a circle, I suspect.

nanna8 Wed 07-Dec-22 07:34:45

Did anyone mention NgozibFulani ? I thought that was another thread .

volver Wed 07-Dec-22 07:42:26

Yes. I did. confused

I read WWM2's post as referring to the whole RF.

Maybe she'll be able to clarify for us.

Those Americans are soooo fed up with them.

Zelensky got one as well. Isn't he just a third-rate actor who couldn't make it in Hollywood? (sarcasm alert)

Indeed, which is why I used the OPs word in the quite and “actor” in my post.

Casdon Wed 07-Dec-22 09:21:40

I do stick by what I said though volver, that wasn’t a headlining article, and they are no longer making the front pages in the USA on an almost daily basis as they did, the fatigue has set in. It will be interesting to see what the reaction to the Netflix production is a few episodes in.

volver Wed 07-Dec-22 09:23:43

I wouldn't argue with that, but I think WWM2 was making a more general point about the soft power that the RF used to wield but no longer does.

WWM2, where are you? 🙂

GrannyGravy13 Wed 07-Dec-22 09:25:12

When The Sussexes arrived at the event they were heckled how do you feel about destroying the Royal Family

She’s probably out doing something useful instead of wasting time on Gransnet rather than cleaning the utility room out like I am!

When The Sussexes arrived at the event they were heckled ^how do you feel about destroying the Royal Family^

And the Waleses didn't get the warmest of receptions at the Boston basketball game.

Your turn.

I was not commenting on The Prince & Princess of Wales.

But here goes, Boston has never been overly friendly to the U.K. royal family, it was pointed out in the news that it has been in the past known for funding the IRA, and that is where their sympathies lay.

(source ITV News)

volver Wed 07-Dec-22 09:37:56

Agreed.

(Didn't know about the IRA thing. There's the Boston Tea Party though.)

So a minority of the population reacting badly and heckling doesn't really tell us anything about the whole population's attitude to something.

Jeezy peeps volver

I was scrolling Twitter (wasting time before my gym class) I saw the clip (from several angles and different people)

As GN is obsessed with The Sussexes I decided to post what I had seen.

(Disclaimer, I am a royalist, I haven’t got an anti M & H agenda I do dislike washing ones dirty laundry in public which seems all the rage in the 21stC)

volver Wed 07-Dec-22 09:55:46

Oh OK.

It was a completely random comment and didn't contribute to the demonisation of M&H and trashing of their work, then. Or reinforce the negative attitudes shown towards them by some many posters on here.

(Another sarcastic emoji alert)

We post things that build on our prejudices. All of us.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 07-Dec-22 10:12:32

Another thread that I will not bother to contribute to anymore…

volver Wed 07-Dec-22 10:14:55

That's your choice ^GG13*, of course.

I'm sure that you appreciate that posting selected information about anybody in any thread contributes to the perception of that public person.
