EU 🇪🇺 the biggest bribery scandal in the history of the EU’s institutions,.

Have you read about this? There’s not been much on the tv news.

But today, in the Telegraph, I thought this was quite shocking.

“Police seizures of suitcases stuffed full of cash are usually the result of crackdowns on crime gangs or drug lords. This time, though, the brick-like wads of €50 notes were found not by the vice squad, but by detectives investigating allegations of corruption in the European Parliament.

Brussels has been gripped this week by stories of an international bribery ring said to involve Qatar, Morocco and influential EU figures. Colossal sums of money have been found in the homes of some of the alleged recipients: €600,000 (£523,000) in bank notes at the home of an Italian politician, €150,000 tucked into the luxury luggage of a Greek socialist MEP, and hundreds of thousands more in the possession of her father. In all, more than €1.5 million has been seized in raids on 19 locations in the Belgian capital and in Italy, some of which were in the Parliament itself.

The investigation centres on claims that Qatar tried to buy influence in order to help secure an “open skies” deal that would give its airlines unfettered access to EU markets and airspace. It is, without question, the biggest bribery scandal in the history of the EU’s institutions, and it could well get much worse, with reports that up to 60 MEPs could be dragged into it. Four people, including Eva Kaili, a Greek MEP who was until this week a vice-president of the Parliament, have so far been charged with corruption, with the prospect of high-profile court cases to come.”

Reminds me of The Hunger Games. 😱
(Or Rollerball with James Caan back in the day).

In France both President Chirac and Sarkosy have been brought to justice for corruption and fraud. Dominic Strauss
Khan, a potential candidate, fell from grace after a notorius
sex scandal and Prime Minister Fillon (and his english wife)
were found guilty of fraud and sentenced.
This week a prominent MP of a left wing party was found guilty of assault on his wife
Not alot of sweeping under the carpet going on here

The Jacob Rees-Mogg article 😂😂😂
You surely can't quote that with a straight face Ug?

Urmstongran Sun 18-Dec-22 13:12:01

But halfpint they are elected French politicians. Not EU bureaucrats. A different breed from MEPs I think (the ones with their suitcases stuffed full of euros).

Mamie Sun 18-Dec-22 13:14:49

MEPs are elected every five years. We used to be able to vote for them. Can you define what you mean by bureaucrat Ug?

Urmstongran Sun 18-Dec-22 13:21:34

People with powers that weren’t voted into positions. The merry go round of networkers who know how to work the system. Once in, moved around but not elected democratically. The so-called Gravy Train. They know who they are. We (often) don’t.

"From an interesting article on this subject from Jacob Rees Mogg in the Sunday Telegraph."

This is satire isn't it? 🤪

We certainly have a lot of them in the U.K., and since Brexit, they have been merrily trashing the rule of law that amongst other things would have ensured the tax on unearned income is paid in the U.K. and not shipped offshore.

This is case in question. An MEP and her close associates. An appalling story and a crime that is being dealt with swiftly.

On 9 December 2022, Kaili was arrested by Belgian Federal Police following an investigation into organized crime, corruption and money laundering tied to lobbying efforts in support of Qatar. A suitcase of cash was found with her father upon his arrest, and bags of cash were found at her home. The same day she was suspended from both the Socialists and Democratic Group with which she sits in the European Parliament and her national party PASOK. As part of the investigation, Belgian Police raided 16 homes and detained at least four others including parliamentary assistant Francesco Giorgi (Kaili's life partner, former MEP Antonio Panzeri (for whom Giorgi had worked at parliament, and with whom he had founded the human rights NGO "Fight Impunity") and Kaili's father who was arrested while on a train with a large amount of cash, having been warned by an accomplice. During the raids over €600,000 in cash was recovered by investigators.
On 12 December 2022, the Greek Anti-Money Laundering Authority announced that it had frozen all assets of Kaili and her close family members. This included all bank accounts, safes, companies and other financial assets. Of particular interest to the authorities, according to the head of the Anti-Money Laundering Authority, is a newly established real estate company in the Athens district of Kolonaki.
The timing of the arrests coincided with the 2022 FIFA World Cup being hosted in Qatar. At the time, there was significant criticism of the hosts within the European Union, but during a speech at the European Parliament, Kaili praised the country's human rights record and criticised accusations of corruption made against Qatar.

This is the Rees Mogg who, this week, told a very experienced wine importer on Question Time that Brexit had made it easier for his business. Despite the guy telling him how it had made importing far more difficult...

And we're meant to believe him?

See the clip and judge for yourselves...

I don't think it's satire, volver, satire usually has an acquaintance with the truth...

Where there are people seeking power there is usually corruption. Greed seems to go hand in hand with the need for power. It's not specific to any nation or group of nations.

If people are pointing at this exposed current EU corruption as a, 'Thank goodness we had Brexit', they are deluding themselves. The UK is just as corrupt as everywhere else, it's just that people don't want to admit it to themselves. Perhaps our politicians are just more sly and sophisticated at hiding it although latterly this seems not to be so easy! Brexit was a xenophobic response and a crime of lies committed against us all in the now Not-So-United Kingdom.

Before Brexit we were fairly harmonious and we had some external input and dare I say protection from other nations and an opportunity of experiencing different ways of seeing things and conducting life.

It was not perfect by any means but it was none the less much more dynamic than the diminutive place we have now become... Just a tiny island, out in the sea, getting poorer by the day ,that the rest of the world isn't too bothered about or are laughing at!

What we have now is called autonomy!

There was a time when people sought public service jobs as a vocation and not as a step up to more lucrative positions.

Back in the 70s a colleague (we've been friends ever since we met) started doing the accounts for a very small charity set up primarily to help and house unmarried mums. She took it over and gradually it grew until they had their own HQ and she employed over 50 staff. This brings us to the early 90s.

By this time she needed a tier of directors below her and 3 were appointed, using the usual large panel for selection. At the same time there was a change in the chairman of trustees to one who did not like her. After a year or so she arrived at work and was told she was being fired. She wasn't even allowed to keep her company car to get home - a journey of over 50 miles along the south coast. During her tenure there was a period when very little development was happening but the charity was still building and converting other buildings into suitable homes.

After her dismissal the charity lasted for less than 2 years. It was run into the ground by the 3 directors who saw it as an opportunity to develop their own careers and over reached themselves.

At one time I believe that people went into politics as a means of helping others and to make life better for everyone. That applies to all the major political parties. Now it is obvious that many go into politics (not all) as a stepping stone to a media career. Someone even joked on Keunnsberg this morning that Matt Hancock will be looking to take over her role or similar.

You took the words out of my mouth !!

Oh the irony.

HousePlantQueen Sun 18-Dec-22 14:55:38

But surely, we must acknowledge the ability to see into the future as shown by Urmstongran and indeed, Rees Mogg himself, the power to see that there would be allegations of corruption in the EU a mere 6 years after they voted to leave. Truly remarkable. Any news on the next lottery numbers from you wise clairvoyant Brexiteers?

Urmstongran Sun 18-Dec-22 14:56:03

Well obviously we have plenty of corruption (all stripes) in our own political circus. I’m just grateful we’re not part of the Brussels corruption squad as well.

Funny how others can point out our governments failings instead of the EUs and no- one shouts “ooh look a squirrel!” to them.

HousePlantQueen Sun 18-Dec-22 15:04:08

I think you'll find that this alleged corruption has been acknowledged and condemned on here. All corruption and bribery and cronyism is wrong, the difference is in how it is dealt with. In the case of the Tory party, that will be not at all.

MerylStreep Sun 18-Dec-22 15:14:11

She’ll probably step down as junker did

left.eu/juncker-leaks-gue-ngl-demands-commission-president-to-step-down/

At least you can’t call this a right wing rag.

Mamie Sun 18-Dec-22 15:59:11

Who is "she" MerylStreep? (genuine question). The MEP Kaili has already been sacked. As I understand it there have been five arrests including Kaili, her boyfriend, her father and an ex MEP.
Has anyone else been arrested?

Urmstongran Sun 18-Dec-22 16:03:12

The Greek MEP perhaps?

Urmstongran Sun 18-Dec-22 16:05:54

I particularly liked the fact that the police could not enter the MEPs property for the hundreds of thousands of euros until the president was there so he had to travel from his home in Malta!

Anneeba Sun 18-Dec-22 16:10:20

Probably hanging out counting her ££££s with Dido?

Anneeba Sun 18-Dec-22 16:12:50

Sorry, meant to show this was a reply to Grow stuff querying whereabouts of Mone.

Mamie Sun 18-Dec-22 16:14:06

The Greek MEP is Kaili Ug. She was sacked immediately.

Grantanow Sun 18-Dec-22 18:11:52

Glad to see most people on here have got the measure of Rees-Mogg!

DaisyAnne Sun 18-Dec-22 20:58:32

Oreo

MerylStreep

I’ve been watching this for about a week or more.
She’s just one who has been caught. Others are far more clever.

Bet it’s been going on for years, probably the tip of the iceberg.
The EU gravy train has loads of opportunities for corruption.

No personal bias there then hmm

A few facts would at least make it seem as if you aren't supporting a baseless faith in an extreme ideology.
