I'm laughing because there appears to be so much that isn't fact. I find it amusing that it's regarded as NF. Factional would be a better description; a combination of fact and fiction.

Baggs Wed 11-Jan-23 09:52:06

If one has to preface truth with 'my', then it likely isn't truth but more about interpretations and feelings. Which, from what's been said in news stories, is spot on.

volver Wed 11-Jan-23 09:57:04

Ah, OK about the non-fiction thing. Fair enough.

Doodledog Wed 11-Jan-23 10:12:54

I think that the lines between fiction and non-fiction are always blurred in memoirs and autobiogrpahies - how could it be otherwise? It's just that as this one is criticising the RF, rather than the parents of a footballer or actor (who have even less chance of being able to defend themselves) people are getting upset.

Disclaimer - I would hate it if my children wrote exposes about me (not that they would run to more than a few pages grin), as I do see it as a betrayal of trust, and also, ironically, of the need for a safe space to be yourself that a family home should provide - having your most private moments shouted to the world is very bad for the mental health that Harry is so keen to protect. I am not condoning the writing of the book, but pointing out that it is no different really from any other book about someone's childhood or family relationships, and memoirs do sell very well.

It should be a bestselling book, look at the publicity! I personally would not bother to read it, in fact I wouldn't even buy a 99p Kindle version.

Smileless2012 Wed 11-Jan-23 11:02:06

I agree Doodledog but this book appears to have more than a blurring of the lines between fact and fiction when it comes to memories.

How for example can H have a memory of an event, how he heard about the death of his GGM, that not only didn't and couldn't have happened, but is re told in such a fanciful way?

GagaJo Wed 11-Jan-23 11:04:16

OnwardandUpward

On the news they showed empty book shops....

I personally don't know anyone who has read it or is even tempted to read it.

I am not going to buy it or read it.

I can't imagine who will read it? There are so many amazing things in life we could all be doing, so who is going to choose that???

I'm going to read it.

GagaJo Wed 11-Jan-23 11:07:24

Despite GN members protests at the lack of popularity, just about every news source is claiming it'll be the book of the year.

Well, I shall be reading it, but not yet as I am 15th in my library queue for it.

FannyCornforth Wed 11-Jan-23 11:10:23

I’ll probably read it.
Not yet though. I’m all Harried out.

(Yes, yes. I’m fully aware that I’m still commenting on the umpteen threads on here.
I’m a hypocrite with too much time in my hands smile)

I’ll get it on kindle

Smileless2012 Wed 11-Jan-23 11:11:07

I hope it will be the book of the year if he makes enough money out of it, he may not feel the need to 'write' his next two books and will finally shut up and leave his family in peace.

FannyCornforth Wed 11-Jan-23 11:12:07

Jo I imagine that it will be book of the decade.
It’s been a publishing sensation, whatever one’s views are re Harry

Two more books? Good grief!
I thought it was just one.
I thought that it was a four book deal for the pair of them - two of Meghan’s (including The Bench)
and two for Harry.

I doubt it's flying off anyone's shelves.
Yesterday; book shops were opening at midnight. Shops in London had queues of 1. Breakfast TV had a reporter and saw 3 customers in 2 hours.

I imagine most people will have ordered the book from Amazon .

Can't wait for the interest die down. I actually dreamt of Harry . More of a nightmare

I imagine most people will have ordered the book from Amazon.

I ordered some Kindle books yesterday and Harry's book was £14.99 for the Kindle version 😲

No, I didn't buy it 🙂

Sago Wed 11-Jan-23 11:16:50

I spend a lot of time in January and February spring cleaning as it’s a quiet time work wise and it means I can spend more time in the garden in the Spring/Summer.
I liste; to audio books as I’m working, I’m currently near the end of Tom Bowers book on Meghan and have got Spare next.
They were on a free trial so they were free.
I would not have paid for them!

We may just have had threads …and threads…and threads about this. Anyone got anything new to say about it ??

Anyone got anything new to say about it ??
Yes, see my post above

😀

I could be wrong Fanny (fingers crossed) but I think he's supposed to be writing two more, and M will be writing one.

Probably. Which as an English teacher I think is sad. Will still read it though. I read Diana's.

Candelle Wed 11-Jan-23 11:29:47

I just saw a woman speaking to a camera crew* who, when asked why she was buying the book, explained that it was because she wanted to read 'the truth'. Eh, what?!

* It popped up in the extremely annoying Gransnet videos.

Glorianny Wed 11-Jan-23 11:31:11

Haven't brought it, won't read it, but I understand there are loads of people who are doing this and it will be a best seller.

Thinking about the "my children would never write their life story and upset me and the family" I have an awful feeling that offered a multi-million pound deal my children would!! grin
As long as they help out with my care home fees that's OK

crazyH Wed 11-Jan-23 11:34:11

I ordered one from Waterstones, for my friend in Australia. I hope she has received it.😂

Smileless2012 Wed 11-Jan-23 11:36:04

hmm maybe someone should have told her it's H's truth which appears to not be the same in all instances as 'the truth' Candelle.

Ha ha! So will a lot of folk I think.

It’ll be a bit the Diana book in the nineties when people swore blind their copy was from a charity shop. 🤔

My explanation was my book club sent it out by mistake. 😂

Oh, and why are you laughing at non-fiction?

Because some people regard it as fiction.

Quite a lot of people I bet!

It showed the piles of his book in a London bookshop yesterday, every copy was marked half price already.😁
