How to be a Republican on the 6th May

I take on board that some people like to see folk dressed up as medieval rulers and to have jewelled hats put on their heads in a made up ceremony. I take on board that the toffs are trying to pretend that refugees and whatever have a central place in British society, especially if they can sing. I understand that encouraging people to volunteer and organising concerts is just what some people think Heads of State should be doing and don't see the irony of spending obscene amounts of money on a party for KC and his family when the country is in deep trouble.

But I don't think any of those things. Maybe you don't either.

How are you avoiding the coronation weekend?

Hope you are all getting to your holiday escape destinations by horse and cart!

ronib Sun 22-Jan-23 19:54:43

But if you had an invite, would you go?

KC3 is wearing his Admiral uniform if anyone cares. The crown is not in the Tower of London but is being altered!

Kate1949 Sun 22-Jan-23 16:19:17

We'll ignore it and carry on as usual.

Farzanah Sun 22-Jan-23 16:14:38

Nothing, I love it, but my first idea was Scotland as a coronation free zone.

FannyCornforth Sun 22-Jan-23 16:00:48

What’s wrong with Sicily?

Aveline Sun 22-Jan-23 15:59:29

Farzanah Sicily? Oh dear.

Farzanah Sun 22-Jan-23 15:57:29

Aveline

There will be in this part of Scotland!

Oh dear, can’t risk it! Sicily here we come.

I’ll be in Italy . They have their Liberation Day at the end of April and it is usually very good with bands and free food and wine in the village.

We have booked to fly to Portugal on 3rd May. So it will by-pass us.

Thank you

I just saw this on Twitter:

One way to find out if we want to keep the Monarchy in the UK is to get only the royalists to foot the bill for this coronation.

Now I like that. Resonates with Fleurpepper's thread about religion.

We’d already booked flights to Málaga. Serendipity. Although if at home we wouldn’t be tuned in. As it is, we hope to be in the communal gardens here, taking occasional dips in one of the pools.

As an aside, it’s Himself’s birthday on that date. He shares it with Tony Blair, who, at a year younger than Himself, will be 70y. I bet that spoilt Cherie’s plans for a big bash as they will be expected to attend poor things.

It only lasts a couple of hours. Plenty of time to toddle off to another beano.

JaneJudge Sun 22-Jan-23 15:25:31

I wish I was in Malaga and I can't believe Tony Blair will be 70!

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 22-Jan-23 15:24:09

I will watch the coronation ceremony for its historical significance and the concert may be interesting, depending on who performs - but the rest will pass me by. We don’t do street parties out here in the sticks and if there’s a do at the village hall I won’t be going. I’m hoping for good gardening weather. Bah humbug!

Do what the heck you like?
No skin off my or anybody else’s nose.

Fleurpepper Sun 22-Jan-23 15:04:21

Head out to the countryside, the woods or the beach, or abroad- and make sure you don't switch on TV.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 22-Jan-23 14:56:52

Take a leaf out of the younger members of my family.

They take zero interest in the monarchy, have zero knowledge of its members and their relationships.

They do know the Queen died and we have a new King😄, they will take advantage of the extended weekend and undoubtedly travel, or spend the weekend enjoying themselves.

But the monarchy means absolutely nothing to them, if it is ever brought up in conversation, they have nothing at all to contribute, and see them all as a waste of space.

JaneJudge Sun 22-Jan-23 14:56:23

when is it?

someone mentioned it at work last week and we have a day off? which is nice..

VioletSky Sun 22-Jan-23 14:54:32

I'll be in my element, bonus Sunday, a lie in, all of the prep for the week ahead done the day before...

I'll probably spend it with my children either online or in person playing games and having a laugh

Grandma70s Sun 22-Jan-23 14:48:59

I used “bread and circuses” in the sense that life needs both, not in its original context.

I’m happy not be a cynical sourpuss. I’m not particularly a fan of Charles, and certainly not of Camilla, but I rather enjoy a national jamboree.

Glorianny Sun 22-Jan-23 14:20:30

I want one.

Just stay off the beaches up here. I'm hoping it will be sunny and they will be empty

volver Sun 22-Jan-23 14:20:29

Ach, another opportunity missed.
