Yes, Charles does suffer with his back. He's 74.
His mother was 27 at her coronation and said how uncomfortable the coach was then.

Oh no! We don't want Charles arriving with a slipped disk and unable to perform the ceremony. I'm serious. If that coach is really bumpy maybe he should travel back in it and not to the ceremony.

With reference to the OP the original state coach is made of giltwood which is a thin layer of gold leaf over wood. I don't know what the new coach is made of, presumably wood but maybe just painted gold?

Maybe they’ll ship it over on a cruise ship so all those thousands of passengers can get a preview? The blokes business will boom- coach maker to the King and all that. He’s not so daft.

It could be useful for nipping down to the supermarket or the pub. It could cause a stir parked on the drive.
I'd have to convert the garage into stables.

I once had to turn down a scented candle, a gift offered to me at work.

Obviously the same rules don't apply for very expensive gifts offered to hereditary rulers who have more carriages than I've had hot dinners.

The thing is, I’d have accepted it gracefully too and I don’t even have a garage to convert.

Isn't it a State coach so wouldn't be a personal gift to the Monarch?

That being said, I might ask to borrow it afterwards, we can all take a turn. Must get the drive power-washed first and the garage cleared of junk DH's essential items.

It might have been state of the art 200 odd years, ago but it’s a glittering farm wagon with the body suspended on leather straps.

I'm in Australia, and I live near to where Jim Frecklington built the two coaches which he donated to HM The Queen. These were the Australian State Coach, donated and first used in 1988 for the Australian Bicentennial. And then there was the Diamond Jubilee State Coach , donated and first used in 2014.

Jim Frecklington builds these coaches purely for the love of it - he is a total craftsman and does a beautiful job. The coaches take years to make - there is no way that he could announce the building of one, and have it ready to donate in a few months.

As far as I'm aware, there has not been any announcement that he is planning on a coach for King Charles. There has certainly not been any news about it from him .
