Camilla - Queen Consort surely?

Twice this week while in the newsagent’s, I noticed that the Daily Express has taken to referring to Camilla as The Queen, both in a front page headline and a news story.
Surely this is incorrect? I understood the title could only be used with a female born ‘into’ the role as it were.

Queen Consort Camilla Was Reportedly “Shocked and Dismayed” About the New Roald Dahl Editions.

Revealed: Camilla will officially be known as the Queen rather than 'Queen Consort' after King Charles coronation

This is a way of 'sliding' her in as queen

She is Queen. She’s married to the King.

What a coincidence!
In todays DT
BUCKINGHAM Palace may soon move to officially describe Camilla as Queen, rather than Queen Consort
Royal aides are considering introducing the change after King Charles’s Coronation in May.
Queen Elizabeth II last February expressed her “sincere wish” that her daughter-in-law be known as Queen Consort when Charles became King
Last week, Camilla launched the Queen’s Reading Room – with no mention of “Consort” – when she updated the name of her charity, the Duchess of Cornwall’s Reading Room
It is likely that the Court Circular – the official register of royal engagements – will soon reflect the change .
Palace officials have been reportedly looking at precedent, including the titles used for the wife of George VI, Charles’s grandfather. As a non-reigning Queen, she was technically Queen Consort to George VI but was known in public simply as Queen Elizabeth

This is (to me) so nit picking
King and Queen just a way by some to ‘put her in her place’ or so it seems

Pittcity Sun 26-Feb-23 08:20:55

She'll always be Camilla to me.

Anniebach Sun 26-Feb-23 08:44:31

All non reigning queens are Queen consorts, when George 6
died we had queen Mary, queen Elizabeth and Queen Elizabeth 2nd.

Mollygo Sun 26-Feb-23 09:41:01

She’ll be Queen Consort, but known as Queen Camilla. No problem with that. Besides, it will be fun to watch all the sniping about it.

Floradora9 Sun 26-Feb-23 21:25:25

I read in the paper to-day after the coronation the consort bit will be dropped.

Camilla is a very un-queenlike name. Not traditional enough.

🤣🤣🤣 sorry but that’s so funny.
Camilla is just as good as any other name.
Every tradition has to start somewhere.

I thought it was a Roman name, so pretty traditional - as was Diana.

Yes, she was Roman, daughter of a King. I read some of Virgil's Aeneid many moons ago, starring Camilla the warrior.

Ironically, she was a favourite of the goddess Diana.

You don't get much older than Camilla for a name!

Callistemon21 Sun 26-Feb-23 23:26:22

Oh - Eve?

Grandma70s Sun 26-Feb-23 23:38:42

Yes, Camilla is an older name than I realised - but it’s still not traditional in the Royal Family. I recall seeing the Queen (QE2) showing some old paintings of her ancestors to a visiting VIP, and saying that the names didn’t change much - Georges, Edwards, Annes, Elizabeths. I think the name Victoria was a new one at the time, though.

However, you are right - traditions have to start somewhere.

Not all Kings or Queens use their first names, but her second name is Rosemary. Whilst it's a nice name, Queen Camilla sounds better than Queen Rosemary.

I was canny and picked suitable names for my DD just in case they married a King 😁

I picked my children's names with consideration of how it would sound if they were introduced as BBC Foreign Correspondent.

😁

Actually, one uses her middle name, not very queenly at all!

IrishDancing Mon 27-Feb-23 22:34:13

I like the name Camilla (and I like her) but I think I’ll find it hard not to think of Queen Elizabeth II when somebody says “the Queen”.

Chardy Tue 28-Feb-23 07:00:54

When George 5th died, his wife was referred to as Queen Mary and the wife of George 6th Queen Elizabeth. As George 6th died before his mother, Queen Mary was still Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth became QEQM and eventually QE2 became The Queen.

Grantanow Tue 28-Feb-23 09:12:02

In my lifetime the Queen Consort was generally referred to as the Queen. QC is accurate in the case of non-regnal Q's but it has always been dropped in the past.
