Will Johnson senior get his knighthood?

THB it didn't seem that surprising that Johnson put his dad up for a knighthood. Just wondering if he has enough clout to pull it off. What do you think?

MayBee70 Wed 08-Mar-23 23:52:59

And now it seems that Johnson has earned 3.5 + million since the start of the new year. So much for being a disgraced politician. Wonder how the Red Wall voters who think he’s their mate gunning for them feel about that.

Apologies. I forgot Sir Dilwyn's forthcoming honour!

The thing is, he has no real connections with France apart from his mother being born there. Can you imagine if everyone who has a parent born in the UK, but does not visit often, does not speak the language, doesn't have close connections to the country- could just walk in to British nationality.

They can obtain British citizenship if they wish.
You are describing my DGS!

According to Fiona Bruce

“He only broke his wife’s nose once. It was a one off”

FannyCornforth Fri 10-Mar-23 03:55:07

What!?! 🤬

(I’ve never liked that woman)

Whitewavemark2 Fri 10-Mar-23 03:58:06

QT.

Not biased of course - unlike Gary Lineker who is 😄😄😄

FannyCornforth Fri 10-Mar-23 04:11:24

Thanks WW, I’ll watch it on Catch Up
(if I can bear it - I remember Ian Collins saying that QT involves ‘more audience participation than The Rocky Horror Show’ grin)

And I thought exactly the same as you about Lineker.

And he often hit her.

I dislike Boris but you do realise that he hasn’t actually put his father’s name forward don’t you?

Explain, please, Oreo. Some of us (I'm using that phrase as in "the royal we" 😉) haven't been keeping up with the so-called Boris list stuff. TVM 🙂

FannyCornforth Fri 10-Mar-23 10:29:45

Oreo is right Baggs, he hasn’t actually done it yet.
It’s just ‘rumoured’ and ‘reported that he is going to do so’ etc

Fleurpepper Fri 10-Mar-23 10:32:18

Which is why it is so important that anyone who feels it would be wrong, an outrage in fact- should sign the petition. Strong message required here.

Here is a petition against his Knighthood

To be fair, he is and has been a very good campaigner for the environment, before it was ‘a thing’

Here it is again

Nearly 280, 000 have signed

Johnson is making a mockery of the honours system. This should surely encourage a reform of the whole system. We need a second house but only if it is full of carefully selected members chosen for their experience and dedication to the country.

I'm glad you've made that point. As a young leftie I was all for abolishing the H or L but not anymore, as a good well functioning H of L can act as a brake on hurried legislation in the HoC.

Have a college friend in her early 70's still with energy who now sits on the cross benches in the H of L -she started off on a council estate, got to Uni, and spent a lifetime at work on Alcoholism and Civil Liberties too. She's just the sort of person we need, people with depth of knowledge in various different fields.
People like her bring something precious - time - time to look into things properly and not knocked about by party loyalties and even f they do have loyalties dont respond to a whip "just like that".

How we'd get to that point is far from easy, but we have to start with abolishing hereditary peerages and bishops. We have to change "who appoints" too.

Siope Fri 10-Mar-23 10:51:55

He’s clearly not still considering it - he’s either done so or he hasn’t - given that the Appointments Commission is currently vetting his nominations list.

Baggs Fri 10-Mar-23 11:08:08

OK, thanks, people. A rumour thread 👍

Mamardoit Fri 10-Mar-23 11:18:43

It doesn't bother me if I'm honest. Lots of people don't deserve to get a gong. It doesn't affect anyone. I am much more worried who becomes a Lord. The people there are unelected and have power, expenses funded by us and other perks. If someone like Bercow becomes a 'Sir' I don't care but he should never be a Lord.

So you believe in nepotism in its most blatant form then? Gosh.

Mamardoit Fri 10-Mar-23 11:43:56

I can't think of anywhere nepotism doesn't exist. Parents will always smooth the way for their own if they can. The sports coach who manages a kids team never drops his own child. Stanley has at least done something of note re the environment. It's just my opinion and like I said just having a gong does affect the rest of us. I'm not impressed with titles. Just my opinion.

MayBee70 Fri 10-Mar-23 11:47:14

Is this all a smokescreen behind which they’re trying to sneak through Dacre’s peerage (again)?

FannyCornforth Fri 10-Mar-23 11:50:16

I thought that Dacre was already a Sir?

MaizieD Fri 10-Mar-23 11:50:39

Even the Daily Mail disapproves!

But how about Fiona Bruce on QT excusing S Johnson for breaking his wife's nose because it was 'only a one off' 😲

How many times would she have had to have her nose broken before it became a matter for condemnation?

(And how about a bit of female solidarity in deploring domestic violence, Fiona?)

I wonder why I thought that confused
