BBC News - Sturgeon's husband arrested in SNP finance probe
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-65187823

I am sorry to read this as I had faith in the SNP. I hope that a police investigation into this matter will bring out the truth of the matter.

Murrell released without charge:

Thank you Blondiescot, I was going to direct people to your post on the other thread.

Released without charge! Good! But what was all that about?

paddyann54 Thu 06-Apr-23 01:01:00

Just an average day in the SNP ,and people wonder why Nicola stepped down.She/they live in a very ordinary wee street, no gated community ,The threats have been relentless and regular .The guy jailed last month threatened to decapitate her .Today saw numerous police ,a forensic tent and the local EEGIT waving his butchers apron outside her house .
If they (westminster) cant bring her down one way they'll try all and anything else .Note ,BILLIONS misappropraited by Bojo's circus .Mone still sunning herself on the continent....NO police raids for what was misuse of PUBLIC money .

The money they allege has been misappropriated by Peter Murrell is not public money ,its money raised BY SNP members for use by the party .
Today saw a flood of donations to the party as well as new memberships ,one woman posted on FB ,"donating £50 to the SNP the ONLY party I trust with my hard earned cash"

£50 is nothing in the scheme of things when you think of the billions wasted /pocketed by tories but it shows that the SNP is not finished however much some want it to be.

For those SNP supporters s don’t worry Peter has been released without charge it’s funny there were more police outside his house than a man wielding a gun in my local vicinity I personally think it’s a ploy to discredit the SNP when we’re doing so well angry

No point in speculating about the background, which will hopefully come out in detail as the investigation progresses, and will hopefully address exactly who did what and when, and who knew about it. This could be the reason for Nicola Sturgeon's rapid and unexpected departure, but how likely are we to get to know that for sure? What is certain, is that whatever the outcome, this will not benefit the prospects of the SNP, and Labour must be rubbing their hands with glee.

volver3 Thu 06-Apr-23 07:33:14

Labour: Unionist Party
SNP: Independence Party

No doubt some people will switch from SNP to Labour. However I don't think Labour should be "rubbing their hands in glee" too quickly. They will not give credence to the idea of independence and will not accept that some people might vote Labour if they did. They might also consider that entering unofficial pacts with the Tories is not a good look.

Sarwar seems to be a good guy but he needs to establish Scottish Labour as distinct from UK Labour.

What is all this?

Paddyann- misappropriating funds is misappropriating funds no matter where it came from.

I would never trust an organisation that could not see the dangers of having a related couple, whether married, in a relationship, siblings, parent or child, or any other combination, holding the two key roles in an organisation.

In this case if couple themselves and party members cannot see the dangers, even though the couple be as pure as driven snow, I wouldn't trust their judgment on anything else.

Mollygo Thu 06-Apr-23 09:18:17

That arrest? Very dramatic. Unexpected dramalama in Westminster and the question always asked is What’s this being used to cover up?
So. . .
Thanks for the explanation about it being only donations from the SNP members that has allegedly been misappropriated, rather than public money.
I don’t condone any misappropriation of money, but if X misappropriated more than Y did justifies it for some posters-that’s their choice.

That'll be News International out the window then.

Walmart, Ford, BMW, ALDI, Nike.... IKEA, I think?

I think he could only be held for a certain amount of time, maybe 12 hours, then would have to be released, probably with instructions to remain contactable.Sadly, the damage is done, and in time will be remembered as he and his wife stealing the dosh for their own use.

Remember that this case is still under investigation and that writing anything that would prejudice the case is out of order, even if you don't believe it to be the truth.

Serious question.. Would that be enforceable in England, NI and Wales? Or just Scotland?

No smoke without fire.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 06-Apr-23 12:08:01

Enforceable throughout the UK.

Enforceable throughout the UK.

It is indeed. Scots Law on contempt of court is quite clear on that.

Hermother Thu 06-Apr-23 12:15:43

From the Independent,

"‘Hard to believe’ probe not factor in Nicola Sturgeon’s resignation, says former SNP minister
Former Scottish Government minister Alex Neil said it is “hard to believe” that Peter Murrell’s arrest was not a factor in Nicola Sturgeon’s resignation as first minister."

"The Salmond-era health secretary told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “Well, Nicola did resign very suddenly. Everybody and their granny knew about this investigation."

“There were very strong rumours for the last couple of months that some kind of arrest was possibly imminent, so it’s hard to believe that it wasn’t a factor in Nicola’s consideration. Given that a large number of people had been interviewed, including staff at SNP headquarters, it’s hard to believe Nicola wasn’t aware.”

volver3 Thu 06-Apr-23 12:25:23

So?

Aveline Thu 06-Apr-23 12:33:35

So the Independent can write about it and the BBC present interviews about it but we mustn't comment here on our wee posting forum for Grannies?
