BBC News - Sturgeon's husband arrested in SNP finance probe
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-65187823

I am sorry to read this as I had faith in the SNP. I hope that a police investigation into this matter will bring out the truth of the matter.

Anything that could prejudice a trial if there is one.

Why was it on the Christmas board? 🤔 If that's not a leading question?

Thank you.

I wouldnt have a clue what could prejudice any trial.
I need to read up.

I don’t know why NS resigned. Her husband may well prove to be guilty of fraud-they don’t arrest without some grounds for suspicion.
I don’t know whether NS knew that the alleged fraud was going to hit the headlines.
I do know that posters on GN tell me that she is clever/astute etc.
If poster’s beliefs are true, that claim supports the idea that she knew what was going on.
But if he is guilty, whether she knew, or for how long she knew, or why she resigned so quickly after saying she had ‘plenty in the tank’ who knows?

I cant see how any potential juror could fail not to be swayed in different directions by the media, social media, what people say in the street etc.
But hey ho.

What is interesting is that he was arrested. He didn't do the usual thing whichis voluntarily attend the the police station (accompanied by his lawyer). The police feel they have enough evidence to warrant an arrest.

Has he been given bail and on what bail conditipns.?

Personally, I never understood why any party could not see the obvious danger of having a married couple as party leader and party chairman. Even if their conduct in post was as pure as driven snow, it surely is going to lead to rumours and suggestions of corruption and inner dealings to which others are not party.

Even if Nicol Sturgeon was so cloth eared and cloth minded that she couldn't see the problem, why on earth did not other senior SNP leaders see the dangers and advise her forcefully of the dangers. Publically if necessary.

Or is it again, as in Parliament, another demonstration of the danger of professional careerist politicians afraid to put their jobs and pensions at risk by standing up and being counted on issues like this.

It was on the Christmas board because I wasn't paying attention when I posted it. It was a mistake.

Me too maddyone... and resigned in such a hurry.

It was rather odd, when only a month or so earlier, after Jacinda Ardern's resignation, she had declared she still had "plenty in the tank".

Shouldn’t that read plenty in the bank

Good one MerylStreep 💵💴💶💰

May I ask if the police have made an arrest does that mean they have solid proof of wrong doing?

I binge watched 6 4 and enjoyed it. It is an interesting storyline.

Have just googled it and come up with an Apple watch!

Where can I find it please? Always up for a good series ...

It is on STV Player MadeInYorkshire.

Christmas come early?

Might I point out that this is now a live case under Scots Law. Warnings have already been given about the possible consequences of commenting on it - so be careful what you post.

Joseanne Wed 05-Apr-23 16:07:14

I'm being ultra careful about commenting in it, whatever it is, but isn't it exactly what people have been commenting on for ages, except it was being closely guarded until now? Surely no great surprise.

That may well be, but under Scots Law, there's a very distinct line drawn before and after a case is considered 'live', which this now is.

Joseanne Wed 05-Apr-23 16:19:37

OK 👍

tickingbird Wed 05-Apr-23 16:21:18

I don’t know a great deal about this but did think there was another reason NS resigned. I believe she knew this was coming and regardless of her husband’s innocence or guilt it wouldn’t really be feasible to carry on as FM once it was made public.

Regardless of any thoughts about innocence or guilt, what were the police searching for in their house? I saw the News this afternoon, and there were two large vans outside the house and several police officers going in and out.

Unless they were expecting to find used fivers under the mattress (unlikely) or an accountant hidden in the wardrobe (even less probable) what was that in aid of? I assume they'll have his devices anyway, and they'll be able to see his communications and bank transactions even without them, so I found a search of the house mysterious.

To wrap it in mystery, or to spruce things up a bit?

Thanks Parsley!

I thought you wanted to claim the first mention of Christmas on GN this year 🎄

Doodledog They will be searching for evidencce and devices that may have been hidden in the house in hopes of them not being found or documents and devices that had been accidentally left there or left there and forgotten about.

Yes, but what could be on them that is not accessible anyway? Any financial transactions that happen digitally will be visible to the police, and in any case, unless he had a computer the size of Bletchley they wouldn't need two big vans.

M0nica Wed 05-Apr-23 18:20:32

The police will always turnover the arrested person's house, they probably do not expect to find anything, but now and again they find odd papers, letters, disks, that add substance to the evidence they already have. Plus of course people will hide things under floor boards, in attics, even boxes buried in the garden.

Their vans no doubt contain scanning and other equipmnt plus space for police to change into those all purpose evidence gathering white overalls. Possibly also decontamination equipment.

welbeck Wed 05-Apr-23 19:21:23

not only Scots law, but throughout the uk, a criminal case is live once a person has been arrested.
those interested could read up on the contempt of court act 1981, with particular regard to the strict liability rule, and bearing in mind that for the purposes of the act these forums are an example of published material.
also remember that ignorance is no defence.
