Hello 👋
Just that. A straw poll.
It would be interesting to see the lay of the land with this.
See how it goes…

Rent a mob should not be able to spoil the coronation the majority of the UK support the Monarchy, nobody should be allowed to stop it.

It’s not about the right to protest, many extremists aim to stop the coronation if they can, there seem to be plenty of extremists on Gransnet.

Sadly the ‘peaceful’ protesters are no more able to control the rabble in their groups than anyone else. And some of the peaceful protestors will secretly admire the effect of the rabble’s actions, whilst avowing that they would never do that.
At least by being arrested they have achieved the publicity they want.

Yeh

Not because I especially like Charles or Camilla but because I think the traditions of the UK should remain, it’s what makes us special

Exactly

I think it's shocking that #NotMyKing peaceful protesters have been arrested. The police won't say why won't be interviewed. The billionaire Charles must have his Coronation

They have liaised with police from the start and been assured they would be able to protest today.

I'm very surprised that not all MPs were invited, only about 80 - seems a curious decision, after all they are our elected representatives.

OK so if monarchy is wrong and so is presidency then what would you suggest?

nadateturbe Sat 06-May-23 07:29:09

A definite nay. Monarchy is just wrong. And quoting what you consider a bad example of a president doesn't make it right.

Calendargirl Sat 06-May-23 07:08:32

Just listening to ‘Zadok The Priest’ on the radio.

Spine chilling.

I think watching the Coronation for the music alone will be a treat.

I have gone from whatever I posted before to Nay.
The more I hear and read about it, the less interested I am. Dont know why. Just me perhaps.
Wondered whether to start a thread then thought my bah humbug wouldnt be nice. Then remembered this thread with it's mix of opinions.

It's tending from Meh to Nay after the ridiculous call for the public to pledge allegiance while watching the TV. Do we still live in a feudal society? Are we still required to tug the forelock? Does Archbishop Welby live on the same planet as the rest of us?

Mollygo Wed 26-Apr-23 11:09:12

Enjoy, Aveline. We’ll be 300 miles away with family, taking part in a village celebration. I have no idea whether some down there will choose to stay home, go elsewhere, keep the TV off or avoid it by some other means. They had a great turn out for the jubilee celebrations and I’m expecting the same.

Aveline Wed 26-Apr-23 08:48:59

I'm looking forward to it. DD asked if I'd be watching on TV and has asked if she can come and join me. She's quite young but interested. I'll have lovely snacks and drinks. We're having drinks in the garden with neighbours later and DD and her OH and kids are going to a BBQ with friends. Her friends all have young families and they're looking forward to it too.

Keep the monarchy, think president Jeremy Corbyn 😱

Grany Tue 25-Apr-23 10:43:37

Abolish the monarchy they are a waste of space and money

Louella12 Tue 25-Apr-23 10:13:29

Haven't young people mostly been disinterested in the monarchy?

Had they all disappeared when I was teens/20s/30s I'd not hands been bothered at all.

Now I'm vaguely interested, very vaguely, but I'd not vote to evict.

Grany Tue 25-Apr-23 10:09:31

I should do a word check before send.

Grany Tue 25-Apr-23 10:07:51

Would you believe BBC London is asking. Should We Abolish the Monarchy? And Jeremy Vine on 5 this morning is asking the same. It's to do with the polling where the young mainly favour an elected Head of State. Australia getting together groudon't know what relevance king Charles has in their country. They go democracy not monarchy themed events across the nation for supporters to gather in person and have their voice heard.

According to my diary we have the fewest number of bank holidays of all the countries listed. We have 8, most have about 10/12 and Japan is the winner with 15!
A day in October woukd be most welcome, and we would still be at the bottom.

Callistemon21 Mon 24-Apr-23 15:08:46

We really do need a bank holiday (or two) in the autumn.
It's a long stretch from August to Christmas.

All Saints Day?
Harvest Festival?
Apple Day?

Mollygo Mon 24-Apr-23 13:21:33

Greta

I agree with you there, Germanshepherdsmum, nothing wrong with liking traditions. Some of them. I actually think we could create some more bank holidays to celebrate or mark events.

Yes indeed. How about the middle of October-because it’s the middle of October, or November 23-to promote entente cordiale with our US members.
