I fear the rise of National Conservatism

I have disliked the direction the Conservatives have taken but this is such a stark reflection of the 1930s that I fear it.

Not heard of them? This New Statesman Podcast by Andrew Marr may help you understand who and what they are.

They are holding a conference next month (15 - 17 May). Speakers are to include Jacob Rees Mogg, Michael Gove, Suella Braverman and Danny Kruger. There will be lots of our Union flags, apparently. GB News also seems strongly represented.

Marr is a very knowledgeable man, so can give a much better explanation about where this Nationalist party has come from and why, than I can.

He does explain what the Labour Party are offering - a stronger state built on less centralisation - in reply to the perceived problems that have given the extreme right power around the world to revive nationalism. (He is going to do an analysis of the left in this series)

He also explains the roots of this party, as shown by its website nationalconservatism.org/ and summarises what this means to Rishi Sunak and to the left.

Please watch it before you reply, and don't just guess what it is about. We should both know and understand what this is about and where it is coming from.

I don’t fear them. I’ve read or tried to read all their gumph and it’s quite complicated, much more than it would appear on this thread. One of the articles on the link entitled “National Conservatism- a liberal response” by Alex Morton on 5th April said “Regardless of how you feel about National Conservatism and its goals, this is an impressive Conference that is at least trying to grapple with big ideas. In a world of dreary technocratic decline, even a national liberal such as myself welcomes the challenge and debate this will bring. After all, liberals have always welcomed the challenge of debate and free thinking ideas and I look forward to attending the conference in a few weeks.”

I think we should listen to what they have to say before we make up our minds.

I read enough on their website to make up my mind 25Avalon.

But GMS the website seems to be primarily United States based. I want to hear what this Conference in the UK actually has to say before passing judgement. It’s the dilemma of democracy that we allow people to speak. Maybe one day we will all vote for a despotic state. That would be the true irony of democracy if we voted to have it taken away.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 25-Apr-23 13:12:57

The website gives a chilling insight into their policies, however they might dress them up to appear palatable and appeal to a UK audience at their conference.

DaisyAnne Thank you so much for posting the Andrew Marr link. I am incredibly upset and angry that this is happening. My Mother who had to flee from Czechoslovakia thought that the UK was such a kind country that it could never happen here. I am glad she is not alive to see this.

We don’t actually know what this is? When we find out, then that’s the time to throw a wobbly garnet 25.
I have a horrible feeling that this is a load of confused intellectuals …..

As you know, I’m a Conservative I am always deeply puzzled by this sort of comment. How can anyone "be a Conservative"?

The Conservative party, like all other parties, consists of those who belong to it at a moment in time and the policies they promulgate - these change - the people and the policies. I do not understand how anyone can "be" anything when it comes to political parties as they are not a static entity - they change all the time.

I find it best to weigh up what each has to offer when an election comes around.

GSM, I mentioned Brexit in relation to this discussion, as I saw an awful lot of union flags on the website; my question was

In a non goady manner, I would love to hear the opinions of those on here who supported Brexit, are to the right of politics in their views, and who watch GB news; what do you think of this movement?

I have not, as yet, read any replies

Errmm ... it's not that difficult to know what it's all about, if you follow international and national political trends.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 25-Apr-23 16:48:59

I hold traditional Conservative values and it’s the party for which I always vote, apart from a brief dalliance with Blair.

Luckygirl3 Tue 25-Apr-23 16:52:55

Thank you for explaining that - what are traditional Conservative values?

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 25-Apr-23 16:53:08

To partially satisfy you, HPQ, my politics are right-leaning but I voted Remain and have never watched GB News.

I'm sure you know that Alex Morton is a writer for Conservative Home and not exactly without bias.

In what way is this conference "impressive"?

The "big ideas" seem to be how to counter social liberalism. There can't be anybody who's interested in politics who doesn't know what the agenda of the British speakers is.

They don't have any economic answers, so they distract with social conservatism, which they know will always "sell" to voters in the UK.

People don't need to be a political Einstein to see which way politics in the UK (and internationally) has been heading for some time. Look across the Atlantic and to countries such as Hungary to see where we're heading socially.

Yes, let them speak but let's hope people have their critical thinking caps on.

Roger Scruton, among others, at the National Conservatism Conference in London May 13,2019 - YouTube video Renewing our communities by revitalising the nation state. 35 minutes.

Maybe a quick introduction into the theory/thought behind the organisation?

If Roger Scruton is going to be there, I'm afraid it says just about everything for me.

A bit of a deviation from the topic, but do you think that the tory party as it is in government now is upholding traditional Conservative values, GSM?

growstuff Tue 25-Apr-23 17:03:28

Ooops! Sorry, I thought you were trying to say Scruton would be there which, considering he's dead, would be a miracle.

Sorry! But I had no time at all for Roger Scruton. I found his values abhorrent.

MerylStreep Tue 25-Apr-23 17:06:25

Andrew Doyle is on the “list” posted.
He’s a card carrying member of Labour Party.
He voted for Corbyn in the leadership race.

ronib Tue 25-Apr-23 17:10:17

I think we are all getting a bit agitated and do we know exactly why? Yes Scruton died in 2020 but probably other speakers from the same conference made it on to YouTube.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 25-Apr-23 17:13:09

Yes, Maizie. I do.

Growstuff I am impressed that you even spent the time trying to work out what his views were!

Luckygirl3 Tue 25-Apr-23 17:24:11

Two of the major concerns with this bunch: it hails from the US - do we really want to go down that route?; and it has a religious basis - but only the "right" religion of course - I guess that relates to its US bias.

It is striking in its total naivety - no sane adult believes that life is not full of nuances and cannot be broken down into simplistic slogans.

But they will get their supporters, terrifying though that is.

ronib Tue 25-Apr-23 17:26:38

But there are some serious heavyweights in the mix - James Orr for example based in Cambridge?

62Granny Tue 25-Apr-23 17:34:23

Very interesting Daisyanne, it is this constant drip feeding of Nationalism that is worrying turning people against others just because they are different to you that is worrying also the way things are interpreted in the main stream press .

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 25-Apr-23 17:34:44

He is a professor of philosophy of religion - nuff said?

Why? I don't understand this comment.
