Tories in Norwich have sent a leaflet to voters in Labour voting areas telling them that they don't need ID to vote.

(I hope the image is readable. If not try the twitter thread where it is reproduced)

When the state changes the rules, some people comply, some people try to comply and fail, some people get confused, some people give up.

I can remember when we didn’t need this to travel around Europe, let alone vote

Citizens of the United Kingdom have always needed a passport to travel round the Europe in mine and my parents lifetime.

In fact I gave my Great Grans passport

Only to get back into the U.K.

Travel around Europe was seamless

Reporting

Women were turned away if their ID had a different name on it to what the voter lists showed.

Ww2 presumably voter fraud had been prevented therefore?

You would think wouldn’t you until you then begin to actually think critically.

“ What about women who use different name to avoid being traced by an abusive former partner? Women who live in temporary sanctuaries, people escaping modern slavery? People granted temporary court anonymity? There are numerous legitimate legal reasons why women use different name”

All of these women were entitled to vote.

I used my bus pass 😊

You have always had to show your passport when leaving the UK.

Now you have to show your passport and get it stamped when you arrive and when you leave to come back to the UK but once in the EU you can travel by road to most EU countries freely there are no borders.

Well I would think they would have enough to worry about nevermind worrying about voting. Scraping the barrel now to put your point

👀

“1 in 18 applications for government voter ID rejected by councils

FOI request found 100s of rejected applications,

1 local authority rejected more than quarter of applications it received”

And on top of all their worries you would disenfranchise them?

Ww2 something can be rejected and then resubmitted.
Means voter fraud policy is working.

But you have zero evidence of wide scale voter fraud.

it doesn’t exist

You are believing this gaslighting without giving it critical thought.

The electoral roll is filled in once a year. If a woman had got married since then and changed her name (and her passport and her driving licence), then the 2 wouldn't tally.

ronib Fri 05-May-23 09:28:27

Chardy it’s so simple all you do is change your name on the electoral register. Follow instructions online. No problem.

Wyllow3 Fri 05-May-23 09:57:28

Up on I player - NHS workers turning up with their NHS photo ID had assumed it was OK and were turned away.

Terrific.

Wyllow3 Fri 05-May-23 09:58:07

Supposing you don't have online access?

One should never just assume something is ok, always better to check.

There has been online, and published across all forms of media a list of acceptable photo ID.

It said on the back of the polling card sent to all people eligible to vote what ID was needed, it's not rocket science just turn up with the correct ID or you will not be able to vote.

ronib Fri 05-May-23 10:04:26

Wyllow3 local councils will help with change of name in the very unlikely scenario where there’s no online access.

Her name would be different to that on the electoral register and she wouldn’t have been allowed to vote before photographic ID was required.

Visgir1 Fri 05-May-23 10:11:25

I asked the teller last night, about the Id, they said no one complained, a couple forgot went home and came back. Not an issue here.

ronib Fri 05-May-23 10:11:45

GG13 change name on electoral roll online and apply for a postal vote. Once new passport/photo id updated, voter can then choose again.

ronib Fri 05-May-23 10:16:58

Or even change passport… it should not take that long…

Of course they are entitled to vote, but if their name is not on the electoral register they cannot.

It is possible to opt out of the open register, that way your name is not available to all and sundry.

Those seeking anonymity from previous partners/family should always do this.
