Well I agree with this. Everyone should be issued with an ID card, but when Tony Blair’s government tried to do just that, the outcry could probably have been heard on the moon. Most EU states have ID cards for their citizens, why not Britain?

Perhaps it's time to reconsider ID's. The world is very different from 20 years ago. We all know how much information is held or is available about us already. I was uneasy back then too: tbh it doesn't feel very different from a passport now.

I think the cost of the whole palaver was pretty off-putting as well.

The first time this has happened since universal franchise.

ID is a daft idea, but if voter ID is now a requirement, then EVERYONE should have a voter ID not this silly and suppressing piecemeal idiocy we are putting up with.

ID is a daft idea, but if voter ID is now a requirement, then EVERYONE should have a voter ID not this silly and suppressing piecemeal idiocy we are putting up with.

But can’t you just use your driver’s licence? Most adults have to carry them with them at all times here. Those who don’t have them can get other forms of ID though it has to be a photo ID. We don’t actually have to have ID to vote, they just cross your name off a list when you go. If you don’t vote you cop a fine unless you have a good reason. So if you really don’t want to vote you go and get your name crossed off and then spoil your ballot paper. Quite a few did it the last time I worked at a polling booth. You need a photo ID ( driver’s licence) for various clubs and the RSL clubs here, you can’t get in without.

No storm in a teacup when up to 1/5th of voters being reportedly turned away - that is huge.

I’m not sure how you equate labour gains with franchise suppressing. This is about our democratic rights being taken away, just as our right to assemble and protest is being suppressed.

This government is bad for the country.

A Tory success? Well I guess it succeeded in what it set out to do, because there was no other reason for the requirement. In fact we have had more Tory prime ministers in the last couple of years or so than voter fraud convictions.

It's not as easy as people are making out for some to get the photo ID. Fine for the privileged to assume it is. Cost of getting photo, no printer, difficulties if you are not 100% in mind or body, and so on. That's what we found locally knocking on doors. Just one more demand to cope with.

Not a democracy at all. When voting turnouts have been so low, it looks very much to me like a politically motivated way of going about it: we all know who will find it hardest.

Having said that, so far its pretty clear that people are not happy with who is in charge now.

Yesterday, there were stories of:
women being turned away because their name on the elector list was not the same as their ID.
disabled people being turned away as there was no ramp
old people being turned away as they had the wrong ID
a person being turned away as they were told they'd already used their postal vote. They hadn't applied for a postal vote
Voter impersonation in 2022 was 13, of which 10 saw no further action (no evidence etc)

It was possible to get a postal vote if anyone felt unable to get the new voter ID certificate if they didn’t have approved photographic ID.

Citizens of the United Kingdom have always needed a passport to travel round the Europe in mine and my parents lifetime.

In fact I gave my Great Grans passport

So just because a voter was turned away doesn’t mean that they didn’t get to vote. It might have meant that they went back home and found the relevant document and then returned to the polling station.
Or not.
