Will You Pledge Allegiance?

Apparently we are all supposed to stand up in front of our tellys and pledge allegiance to the King saying stuff like “ May the King live forever”
Will you me doing it? Me neither, I’ll be in the garden hopefully.
What does “pledge allegiance” even mean in the 21st century? Before royalist pile in, yes I do know it has its roots a few hundred years ago, and it’s taken from a Handel anthem , but , honestly , that’s no excuse is it? We’re not in the Brownies fgs.

The trouble is Gala, avoiding royal events is becoming a full time activity, I havent got the time for it smile

silverlining48 Sun 30-Apr-23 08:39:29

Heard today it has cost us £250 million and it’s a no from me.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 30-Apr-23 08:45:47

Wasn’t born at the last Coronation, I am pro the Monarchy but have never heard of standing up and pledging allegiance whilst watching on TV.

"Our hope is at that point, when the Archbishop invites people to join in, that people wherever they are, if they're watching at home on their own, watching the telly, will say it out loud - this sense of a great cry around the nation and around the world of support for the King."
A spokesman for Lambeth Palace, the archbishop's office.

I had great hopes of real, meaningful modernisation by the King.
Now we have special vegan holy oil, a new, specially embroidered anointing screen so we can't see what's going on, everyday brings a new surprise and increasing disappointment that nothing will change.

No forelock tugging here.

Grantanow Sun 30-Apr-23 08:46:27

Seems completely out of touch to me.

ixion Sun 30-Apr-23 08:48:31

Hey, it's not just to the King, but we are swearing allegiance to his heirs as well😳
(Same article).

Anniebach Sun 30-Apr-23 08:52:09

Wrong, those who wish to are being asked not all are being asked.

O/P misleading.

Grammaretto Sun 30-Apr-23 08:52:57

I shall be foraging on the beach. I bet Charlie would much prefer to be with us.

nanna8 Sun 30-Apr-23 08:55:29

Haha - not April Fool’s Day a bit late? I simply do believe it.

nanna8 Sun 30-Apr-23 08:55:40

Do=don’t

As a Republican I'll be watching some of the Coronation ceremony purely out of interest in social history, but I feel no allegiance whatsoever to Charles or to any other Royal. The whole concept is a total anachronism, and should be at the very least scaled down to the point where it is no more than a tourist attraction. The Civil List should be abolished, and the so=called Monarchy should play no part whatsoever, even in a ritual sense, in the Government of our Nation. I could say much more about the "worthiness" of the Royal couple, but I'll leave it there. So it's a "No" from me.

Millions around the world will be watching, and enjoying the historical moment in our history. . If your so against it why bother. Just get on with your day. We'll stay with the Kingdoms of Spain, Sweden, Norway, thank-you. A Republic was tried in this country once, it ended well, didn't it. ?
As for the allegiance, nothing wrong with joining in, makes one part of a historical moment. If you don't want to, then don't, it's free choice after all.

ginny Sun 30-Apr-23 08:57:36

No, I won’t be swearing allegiance to the King or anyone else.

Greyduster Sun 30-Apr-23 08:58:24

I will not. I swore an oath to the late Queen when I joined the Services, and was proud to honour that oath, but it died with her. I have to wonder how much the King is letting himself be led through the nose in all this, especially by Lambeth Palace who must be rubbing their hands with glee.

MaizieD Sun 30-Apr-23 09:06:32

Whose bl**dy ridiculous idea was this?

BlueBelle Sun 30-Apr-23 09:07:16

I don’t think many will be doffing their caps and tugging their forelocks have I got that right way round 😂😂😂, maybe a few in our age bracket but the younger generations will be out living life and will have no interest

I have no loyalty or obedience to the rich royals, none whatsoever to the government of the day (years..dragging on years) and little for the country now, as it stands for nothing. I hold dear (hopefully that will spark back up if ‘they’ ever go)

vegansrock Sun 30-Apr-23 09:09:21

Well how do we know who wishes to do this unless all are asked.? Obviously the police aren’t going to knock on the door of those who aren’t tugging their forelocks, but the whole idea is treating us like infants. I wonder how many people wish to do this? Not many I’m guessing.

My neighbour has organised a party for friends and neighbours and I always support her even if I don't support the reason for celebration. It's on the Sunday and having made the Jubilee trifle for her last bash, I've been asked to make a cake like the coronation crown (ffs!) So I shall spend Saturday faffing around with purple and gold sugar paste + a collection of wine gums etc surrounded by sponge cake! A definite no from me but I am pleased the invitations have gone to "ordinary" people who have contributed to society in some way rather than just the great and the good.

Anniebach Sun 30-Apr-23 09:13:57

vegansrock all are not being asked

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 30-Apr-23 09:27:58

Ridiculous idea. No way. And I’m a royalist.

GagaJo Sun 30-Apr-23 09:39:29

FFS, who do they think he is? Caligula?

Err.. which part of " I'll be watching some of the Coronation ceremony purely out of interest in social history" do you not understand, Freya 5? And your assertion that : "As for the allegiance, nothing wrong with joining in", seriously? Read the posts here. The vast majority have no intention of doing so, "it's free choice after all". As for telling me to "just get on with my day".. don't patronise me, or anyone else on here who has the temerity to disagree with your Royalist stance.. which you have every right to express, but not to the denigration of those who don't happen to share it.

Lexisgranny Sun 30-Apr-23 09:41:17

I just think that this is a step too far. I appreciate that it is addressed at ‘those who wish to’ but feel it could be couched in different terms.

There has long been talk that Meghan and Harry should be employing different advisers, but I do wonder whether the same applies to the King. In the Prince of Wales’s position I would be itching to make changes, but there again, the King was previously in the same position, and his choices are now being criticised.

volver3 Sun 30-Apr-23 09:42:13

A Republic was tried in this country once, it ended well, didn't it. ?

I love this argument, its so bonkers.

"We tried that 400 years ago, and it didn't work then. That'll teach us." 🤣🤣🤣

Grandma70s Sun 30-Apr-23 09:54:21

No. I am more monarchist than not, but no

J52 Sun 30-Apr-23 10:00:35

I consider my moral compass to superior, so I won’t.
