What should Sunak do now?

The voter is it seems tacking to the left of centre and yet there are calls in the Tory party for Sunak to go further right, which doesn’t seem to make a great deal of sense.

I always find it difficult to “read” Sunak so am unclear what he may do now.

Does anyone have an idea what he will do now?

Whitewavemark2 Mon 08-May-23 10:10:33

So the panicking Tories have decided to have a go at the NHS to try and win back votes.

So are doling out over £200million to upgrade the phone systems in GP surgeries to try to alleviate the queues.
How on earth is the fact that the NHS is haemorrhaging (?sp) doctors going to solve the issue by putting in new phone systems?

I suppose you will be told that there are no slots quicker.

Someone on the news said that ( not sure which channel). No point improving the phone system if the practice doesn’t have enough staff to deal with patients anyway. They said moral was at an all time low.

Sack Braverman. Sack any Minister who attends a National Conservatism meeting. Remove the Whip from Johnson and Truss.

westendgirl Mon 15-May-23 09:26:21

G rantanow, that would be a start.

ronib Mon 15-May-23 09:49:16

Grantanow how do you know that Sunak doesn’t support the aims of the NatCons?

Why exactly would they be so critical of everything he’s doing if they did, do you think?

Casdon Mon 15-May-23 09:56:44

If he did not they, sorry.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 15-May-23 09:56:57

I shall wait to hear what is said at the conference, and by whom.

ronib Mon 15-May-23 10:07:12

From my reading, I don’t think the NatCons are critical of Rishi Sunak. The conference was planned well before he became prime minister, I imagine. Best wait and see.

Err..

There’s plenty more dissent from the right on various issues.

ronib Mon 15-May-23 10:14:18

When hasn’t there been dissent in politics? That’s the name of the game?

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 15-May-23 10:22:59

National Conservatism isn’t the Conservative Party Casdon.

Angela Rayner guarantees a tory win

I think this could be correct.
I can’t ‘read’ Sunak really either. I’m not really sure what he believes in. It doesn’t seem to be traditional Tory values since his government is a government of high taxation.

I agree. How will new phones help? We need more medics, not more phones!

Well, he believes in Brexit for starters which is quite amusing because the ERG ( who have now morphed into this new group) are now trying to get rid of him.

The latest brainwave for solving the NHS crisis
Reported in Daily Mail

The drastic proposal to let school-leavers learn on the job is one plan to help fix the ailing health service's workforce crisis.

Tens of thousands of doctors and nurses will be able to enroll in the apprenticeship scheme to 'earn while they learn' in the coming years.

Officials believe up to one in 10 doctors and a third of all nurses could eventually be trained through this radical new approach to recruitment.

The plans are expected to be laid out in full in the long-awaited long-term workforce plan, which could come within weeks.

You do realise that Cuba trains its medical workers using an apprenticeship scheme? It seems to work?

We already do this in the UK, it’s not new.

I read somewhere or other that the idea is that you ring your surgery's number, but get through to a call centre somewhere in the country, which is how it is if you try to get through to your bank.

It's been in the planning stages for some time. The idea is to stop the lengthy waits on the phone. A computer will direct you to a centre, which could be anywhere, you will be triaged and a GP appointment will be just one of the options.

Is this being confused with the volunteer scheme discussed last week? I never trust the DM’s interpretation.

Not sure whom you're addressing GSM, but the volunteer scheme is different from the apprenticeship schem and has nothing to do with the remote consultations. They're all separate.

Why doesn’t the NHS do more to retain the medical staff they already have instead of thinking up new schemes for training? Where are the people to train these apprentices to come from?

The NHS haemorrhages so many people because of poor conditions. If they sorted that, the staffing issues would diminish.

Ahem! That's a bit too sensible!
