What should Sunak do now?

The voter is it seems tacking to the left of centre and yet there are calls in the Tory party for Sunak to go further right, which doesn’t seem to make a great deal of sense.

I always find it difficult to “read” Sunak so am unclear what he may do now.

Does anyone have an idea what he will do now?

Suella wants Brits to learn to pick fruit, drive HGVs and to make babies, presumably not all at the same time, to solve the need for immigrants.

Why doesn’t the NHS do more to retain the medical staff they already have instead of thinking up new schemes for training? Where are the people to train these apprentices to come from?

The NHS haemorrhages so many people because of poor conditions. If they sorted that, the staffing issues would diminish.

I threw the towel in 5 yrs ago after 40 yrs nursing and midwifing, we were expected to do more with less resources year on year. At the same time patients were expecting a higher level of service ( home births, pool etc).

Since then it has got much worse, the answer is more staff to spread the workload, competitive pay to make the industry more attractive and better working conditions. Particularly hours, at the end of a busy 12 hour shift, you are often not making the best decisions, truck drivers are not allowed do work 12 hours, why are midwives.

More cash has to be found from somewhere

Should British people not pick fruit, drive HGVs, or make babies? Not sure I understand the point here. There’s no reason why British people shouldn’t do any of these things, although as you’ve pointed out, not all at the same time!

We’ve always had migrants. We’re a country of migrants. Stonehenge was built by people from Turkey. Why is someone who is the daughter or grandchild of migrants telling us that we shouldn’t have migrant or migrant workers? And when they tried to get local people to pick crops in rural areas they couldn’t get anyone to do it.

The point being (knowingly) missed by Braverman is that as the farmers representatives, hauliers and retailers will tell you.

There is simply not enough people to fill the vacancies

It might be said there are not enough British people to pick the fruit and veg, we needed immigrants before Brexit or Covid because British people did not want to do it because of a number of reasons the poor wages, hours and it was not permanent but seasonal.
The problem is to get around all those and somehow I can't see a Dr. or highly educated person escaping Syria or Afghanistan wanting to do it either..

There are plenty of Europeans willing to do the job though

I see that a business man deeply involved in money laundering has been named by the BBC after a judge ruled against his application for anonymity.

He has given hundreds of thousands of pounds to the Tory party. They have continued to accept the money even though they were aware of the case relating to money laundering.

So Tory’s ill gotten gains were as a result of the people of Azerbaijan being fleeced of millions.

But people in predominantly agricultural areas, especially Lincolnshire, voted to get rid of them. In the belief that they were depressing wages and doing local people out of jobs...

What happened next? Food rotting in fields with no-one to pick them and it turned out that the locals didn't want to do the jobs... hmm

MaizieD - sadly true in East Kent.

Clue as to how their minds work. Number of people registered unemployed is approx 1.3 million. Number of job vacancies is approximately 1.1 million. All unemployed people should do one of the jobs available. Simples.

But then there would be no flexibility - and I bet you would be surprised at who was unemployed.

I know - it’s not what I think myself!
