Braverman attempts a cover up.

She asked her civil servants to try two things after speeding

1. to arrange a completely safety private course to avoid being reported

2. then she asked to be entered for a course anonymously.

They refused as it was not in their remit.

So she took the points.

This was reported widely as in including the Guardian and the Mail, but its become an issue for two reasons

the attempted cover up
and asking civil servants to collude with the cover up.

Its the second which in my mind is possibly the most reprehensible.

Both speak to her character however - "I am different, I am better, I can be above the law. (and I want to hide my wrong-doings)

Hopefully, another nail in the coffin, tho unlikely to be a sackable offence?

It depends what she asked civil servants to do. Strictly speaking she should never have used them in this way anyway.

Am I the only one who thinks that Braverman's National Conservative speech was the catalyst for this.

Just to remind people of the criticism at the time:

www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/may/15/tory-mps-accuse-suella-braverman-of-undermining-sunak-authority#:~:text=Tory%20MPs%20accuse%20Suella%20Braverman%20of%20making%20bid%20for%20party%20leadership,-Party%20colleagues%20condemn&text=Despairing%20Conservative%20MPs%20have%20accused,railing%20against%20experts%20and%20elites.

I don't know who the senior Conservatives were, although I could probably have a guess. She's not popular with back bench MPs, who think she's gone too far. Jeremy Hunt and even Priti Patel have criticised her on recent weeks.

Being a fly on the HoP's walls would be interesting.

They are now pushing the Rwanda connection.

I reckon she’s toast.

I see that the net immigration figures are set to be as high as 700,000. The failing Home Secretary has rushed out a policy preventing overseas students bringing their families unless they are research students.
Well that should reduce the numbers 😄.

Braverman is all mouth and no effectiveness.

I don't think many are interested Dinahmo - I posted the same info (pretty much) with a link, this morning.

I saw it somewhere this morning. Is it worth commenting on? Just more depressing confirmation that our government is rotten.

I know. I just thought I'd remind them. I just don't get - some people still coming up with excuses.

As I understand it, she asked a civil servant a question - and someone clearly wants her hung, drawn and quartered for it. This happened last year, she wasn't even Home Secretary at the time, the timing of this leak is extremely suspicious. If they were so concerned then why was the issue not raised when it actually happened? The knives are out for Braverman, just like they were for Raab. She made no attempt to avoid the penalty, as I understand it courses are potentially offered to people who have only broken the speed limit by a small amount - if it was anything more serious she would have been in court. Some celeb lawyer says he has arranged private courses for his well known clients, so its not unheard of. David Baddiel did the group Zoom course and was recognised by another participant - he tweeted about it yesterday - so clearly she was concerned about being recognised. When a private course was not possible, she paid the fine and took the 3 points.

No idea where you get the idea from that she asked civil servants to collude in a cover up - haven't heard a thing about that anywhere, and this has been all over the news for the last two days. What a waste of time - with everything going on in the country, and elsewhere, this is complete trivia!

I don't like SB one little bit but initially I thought perhaps her request was due to the pressures of work - though I think it is pretty shameless of her to try to use her position to seek different treatment.

Even if her actions had been for purely practical reasons, it is fairly certain that, were she to undertake a normal online course, other course members would likely have identified her. This would risk attracting adverse publicity. So obviously people will question her motives.

Really, even if she had made the approach for purely practical reasons, I think it shows both a lack of judgment and integrity. Other drivers would not have the means, nor the right, to make such a request. It smacks very much of a sense of entitlement and a disregard for the notion of fairness.

Honestly guys! Can you imagine how many famous people get speeding tickets and we never see them on Zoom courses or live courses. Of course Suella asked if she could do the course privately. And she is very very busy - trying her best for OUR country. I can’t believe how much attention this is getting when there are so so many more important issues.

Of course there are more important matters, but you seem to be missing the point. Why should she be entitled to do the course privately? Why should she have used tax-payer funded staff to enquire. She should have done what everybody else does, which is to find out in her own time.

She's not the only person in the country who is busy. And as for doing the best for the country ... are you sure we're talking about the same person?

growstuff Tue 23-May-23 19:39:03

That's how people like her stay in office.

varian Tue 23-May-23 19:42:34

SB has shown time and time again that her top priority is to promote herself and her political ambitions. Her second priority is to protect the Tory party. nothing to do with doing the best for our country.

If you’re still reading JaneJudge no, you aren’t alone. I find the casual acceptance of speeding on this thread very disturbing.

Really, Labour is making a mountain out of a molehill! She accepted the ticket for speeding paid the fine. Even the Guardian news reviewer saw yhat it is a Labour attempt to make something out of nothing. We sll know Labour will be in power next year. I look forward to how labour will wave a magic wand and everything will be great! I am waiting to see if the doctors carry on their demand for 29% payrise. I see Chris Bryant may step down ftom the Labour front bench so how about we discuss that. And then there is the SNP with Volver et al not prepared to talk about their quest for independence. They make the excuse of sub judice. Doesnt seem to stop
The newspapers. I hope the Labour party is successful in Scotland. It can only be better than SNP. It is time for national
change! It keeps a democracy healthy. Do not vote liberal democrat. They do not know that women do not have penises!

I wish people would read the thread before they made comments. She did ask civil servants to cover up. I posted this yesterday:

in Parliament session Yvette Cooper said:
‘She refused to say what she asked civil servants to do, so I ask her that again, and to also tell us whether she authorised her special adviser to tell journalists that there wasn't a speeding penalty when there was," she asks.
Ms Braverman replies, almost exhaustedly, that she was speeding last year.
"I regret that. I paid the fine. I accepted the points. At no time, did I seek to avoid the sanction. What is serious here is the priority of the British people," she says.’
(Sky News).

The Mirror were on to this denial of the speeding fine in April, and there’s a transcript of the conversation with the Special Advisor on their site. It’s also reported in lots of other media.

It’s been further reported on today.

I agree Oreo. Talk about a witch hunt.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 24-May-23 09:03:46

What those suggesting a witch hunt etc are overlooking is that it is the Tories who are leading the charge.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 24-May-23 09:18:02

Only 16% of those polled approve of Braverman. (Yougov)

Her ratings are plummeting.

Totally agree!

Someone has sat on this “news” since last year and has revealed it now hoping to cause maximum damage.

I just watched some Labour woman on TV giving her verdict on this and her eyes were sparkling and she was positively drooling with excitement that SB could be in trouble even though the presenters were explaining to her that all SB did was ASK if she could take a private course. It was not pleasant watching this woman as she looked like a wolf with blood dripping from her mouth.

😄😄😄.

There will be more.

Your excitement will be fit to burst soon.
