I’m equally dense, in that I don’t see the connection, but I don’t doubt someone will be along to explain it away soon.

At least some of the protestors are far right thugs, opposed to the event. It is another example of how the extremism of a few leads to problems for the moderate. There is no excuse for the thuggery, but the drag event should not be happening in the first place, and of course the TRAs are evidence that this is all being done in the name of 'culture wars'.

You're right of course Doodledog that the drag event shouldn't have been happening in the first place and as you say, there were some far right opposing the event, which is something.

The last thing we need is vigilante bands of fascists seeing themselves as necessary to police things. The risk is that this will spread, in the name of protecting the vulnerable. It is hard to argue that children should not be protected against obviously inappropriate behaviour, but it should be schools, the police and adults in general who should be doing it, not blackshirts.

And until there's unified action from schools, the police and adults in general there's a void and that is never a good thing.

Sorry, but I don't think there should be rules about preferred pronouns. People can express a preference, but nobody has a right to impose their preference on other people, particularly in the case of children.

IMO Doodledog preferred personal pronouns shouldn't be an option in schools but I can't see that happening now. Still find it hard to believe it was ever allowed in the first place.

I'll use someone's preferred name because a name doesn't mean anything, even if it's usually been a name for one sex or the other.
I won't use a person's preferred pronouns because pronouns do have a meaning specifically linked to the person's sex.
Someone's wish for wrong-sex pronouns means they are pretending to be that sex.

In order not to cause upset I'll avoid using the correct pronouns by using their name or changing the sentence some other way.

I don't think that children should be forced to call someone 'he' if they can see that they are talking to a woman (and vice versa). This is gaslighting, and teaches them not to trust the evidence of their eyes, which is a dangerous thing to do and has safeguarding implications.

I think that adults should have a choice of whether or not to offer preferred pronouns, but that there should be no consequences for those who choose not to, or who prefer to use the pronouns that align with sex rather than so-called 'gender'.

Further, I think that insisting that everyone in a workplace declare preferred pronouns on emails or on screens in virtual meetings should be disallowed, so that those who wish to separate work and private lives can do so, and so that nobody feels compelled to disclose anything about themselves that that is their choice.
