Missing Titanic Submarine

Thinking about this could almost cause me to hyperventilate! I would never embark on such a dangerous voyage. I know it’s only supposed to be of short duration (not sure how long) but so risky. I feel the same when I hear of Richard Branson’s plans to offer commercial space flights at some astronomical price.

Would anyone on here take part if money was no object?

I hope this sub and the people on board (one just a teenager) are found safe and well but the signs don’t look good.

Thank you "Maggiemaybe". That is shocking!

One guy pulled out after paying his deposit of £8,000 because he wasn’t happy with the safety aspects as the submersible was built. Sensible man - in the end. Thrill seekers take big risks but there were no safety plans in the event of the emergency. I am not going to criticise those on the Titan. Their suffering is unimaginable. I am just going to pray that a miracle happens and they are rescued in time. Please join me in prayer.

Not for all the money in the world.

Rosie51 Wed 21-Jun-23 14:41:59

Rich or not they are human beings with friends and families who love them and all are going through a living hell. I desperately hope they can be rescued, I fear they won't be. Compassion costs nothing.

I just cannot imagine what they are going through or understand why they would want to do it in the first place. I would just panic as soon as we started to go down and would not cope at all

Avalon25, 🙏🙏🙏, I'm still hoping and praying for a successful outcome, in spite of time running out soon.

I am not really a religious person but I was sending positive thoughts for them last night. A miracle needs to happen!

There was a journalist on tv speaking today, he’d previously gone down in one of these submersibles and tho they hadn’t gone far there was some kind of fault, so they surfaced. He said there were around 6 or 7 safety features and described them, which kicked in one by one in case of engine or electrics or mechanical failures.Still a risk of course but untrue to say there were no safety measures.
Hoping they will be found before their air runs out, too awful to think about.

Dianehillbilly1957 Wed 21-Jun-23 16:01:21

Amazing the amount of money some people have to throw away for a one off trip!
Of course I hope they make home, a horrible death for them if they're not rescued. But to be honest we have to remember the hundreds who lost their lives so many years ago. The Titanic is their grave, let's show some respect and let them rest in peace.

BlueBelle Wed 21-Jun-23 16:49:32

So agree Diane this was not an explorer finding a new country, a new animal or fish, a new planet or exploring some out of reach area. It wasn’t an inventor finding a new type of seaweed to feed the world on it wasn’t even someone trying to work out a puzzle of why?
It was someone who wanted to visit a grave just because they could and had probably done everything else they could pay for
I hope they are returned to the world as it will be a most awful death, just unthinkable, but they have really looked silliness in the eye and done it anyway
I feel sorry for their families and the 19 year old who was probably gee’d on by his father
Awful situations that shouldn’t ever have happened
Leave the Titanic alone

I'm amazed. they had no means of communication set up before they embarked on this suicidal mission. Hope they are rescued.

mrsgreenfingers56 Wed 21-Jun-23 17:14:41

Never mind all the in's and out's on this, we have human life at risk here and let's hope they can be found, surely that is the most important thing at the end of the day.

But personally I wouldn't have gone.

M0nica Wed 21-Jun-23 17:30:52

gee1jay* they did have a means of communication, but it has failed. This was the first sign there was a problem.

There are similar problems with having any kind of cable or chain going from the machine to the mother ship. The chain or rope would be so heavy because of its immense length, it would be too heavy for the inherent strength of the materials it was made of that it would break.

The problem with a machine like this that is going so deep into the sea is that the water pressure 4 thousands of metres under the sea is well over 5,500 lbs per square INCH. At sea level it is 15lbs per inch. This mean not only do the walls of the vehicle need to be incredibly thick but anything light, like sonar beacons attached to the outside would just crush. If in strengthened lockers, they would crush on release.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 21-Jun-23 17:34:22

Rob Ballard always used a communication cable I believe.

SachaMac Wed 21-Jun-23 17:36:00

I would never have taken part even if I had the funds. Just reading about the depth of the water makes me feel panicky. They knew the risks but wouldn’t have expected the worse to happen. Its an awful situation for them and their families. Let’s hope they are found in time.
I do think it’s about time the Titanic and all of those poor souls that went down with her were left in peace now.

I saw footage on the news of one of the people onboard using a control system that just looked like the sort of thing you use to play on a computer game with. It looked so amateurish. I keep trying not to think of it, but when I do I start to panic. Surely there was a danger that the submersible could have got trapped in the wreckage even if everything had gone smoothly?

The US navy have been using the Xbox 360 controller on their submarines since 2017.

Smileless2012 Wed 21-Jun-23 18:37:20

I'm wondering if anyone here has the same opinion about 'visiting graves' when it comes to the pyramids in Egypt which is what they were built for.

They've been stripped of their contents including the remains of the dead, many having been put on public display.

I don't think it matters in the slightest why these poor men who are trapped are in this horrific position or how wealthy they are. We can't begin to imagine what they and their family and friends are going through.

Blondiescot Wed 21-Jun-23 18:44:54

Indeed, Smileless2012, you could make the same argument about visiting many places around the world - such as the killing fields in Cambodia, concentration camps and so on. And at this present time, it really doesn't matter why they went - we should be focusing on the awful plight in which they now find themselves, and on the horrendous situation being faced by their loved ones.

Redhead56 Wed 21-Jun-23 18:49:49

Well said the whole situation is very hard to comprehend. Peoples need to see a something in such a dangerous position and the risks involved doing so.

Amazing isn't it? A pilot on one of the US space shuttles explained his early missions into space using similar to gaming 64 systems.

It seems communications they had for this submersible failed.

rafichagran Wed 21-Jun-23 19:05:26

I am watching this and hope for a good outcome. I am not interested in hearing about how much money these people have paid for this trip, I just want them to get out alive. These people are human beings.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 21-Jun-23 19:08:00

I will continue to hold these five people in my prayers along with their family and loved ones.

Indeed.

Cemetery in Normandy, mass graves at Dacau, Soldau, Auschwitz. The Honopu Valley, the Arizona. Gallipoli. Long sad list.

Why would anyone want to go and gawp at a ship that sank over 100 years ago where so many poor souls lost their lives.

After all, we don’t go and visit the site of a plant crash do we. Must be something very wrong with these people imo.

The thoughts of this makes me shudder can't think of anything worse for those poor people. Hope they do find them, have until 12 noon Thursday I believe, before 02 runs out.
No amount of money would persuade me to go under the North Atlantic in a sub. Personally think that the grave that is Titanic, should be left in peace.

Absolutely, agree with every word.
