Gender neutral toilets in todays news!

I just wonder what is going on in schools at present.
A girl attacked in gender neutral loos.
The ones I saw in a school were two rows of cubicles with locking doors facing each other but the main entrance was open to the corridor, within sight of adjacent classrooms and anyone passing., so there it would be easy to attract attention. They were designed that way to prevent gang bullying.
Then there are the single sex loos where younger children are frightened of older pupils vaping and scared to use the toilets because they get water poured over them if they do.

Are there no sanctions or punishments available in school to use against these pupils?
If gender neutral loos are being imposed in Gyms then make a god -awful fuss at the reception desk, and leave. Gyms can't afford to lose members at this time.

I worked in education for the majority of my working life - schools polytechnics and universities and none had solid cubicle walls or doors! All had the normal gaps below the partitions and above. I would hate this to become normal. I just about cope with unisex loos whilst camping in europe. (I will admit to using the gents toilets when at the theatre when the womens queues are so long yet the mens have no queue). I feel for the young girls with period issues in that situation.

I agree Smileless those are the preferable kind but alas they get vandalised too.
There are some great new toilets at the beach near here which have been set alight.
They all face the same way, are gender neutral or unisex, and have whb inside.
They were free too
Such a shame that they get abused.

If any LEA wont provide funding for safe gender neutral toilets Molly ie single rooms, then they shouldn't provide any at all.

Re what I said before; when our school numbers increased, governors were told that the number of children still didn’t exceed the acceptable ratio of children to toilets. Incorrect according to sources on Google. LEAs are unaware that most children go at breaks or lunchtime.
Still no funding was available.
Then we move to where they could be placed?

Some of you will have read on other threads my fear that now my Women’s Institute has accepted transwomen without a vote and we are supposed to be democratic, we could have the problem of our members sharing a loo with an UNtransitioned transwoman. We have to accept anyone who presents as a woman, but still has male genitalia. Anyone who thinks this is wrong can sign the Women’s Institute Declaration to demand a Vote on this topic. Anyone can vote you don’t have to be a member.

I think particularly young girls need a separate loo away from the boys. Growing up and coping with periods is a tricky time I remember.

A toilet for disabled people is usually one cubicle with lavatory, washbasin etc and would have a lock. It is not a shared space.

Absolutely! A good solution.
But the usual cries of, “It’s discrimination! (instead of positive action) It’s not inclusive (girls should be willing to include boys) etc would quickly hit the headlines.

I needed the loo when I went to a local cafe and realised there was a queue which consisted of men so I used the disabled toilet instead. I just felt really embarrassed. I don’t mind using a single loo that’s for everyone but I felt really awkward going into one with lots of men around me.

Gender neutral toilets need to be floor to ceiling all round complete with washbasin, they are appearing gradually but the vast majority are male or female still

Disabled loos are usually a separate room for those less able.

What I mean is there’s another cafe that I go to that just has one loo that’s for men or women and I’m ok using that. There’s never a queue anyway. But the one at the other cafe which was for lots of people had several people going in mainly men and I wasn’t expecting ( I’d never been to that cafe before and it was the first time I’d been anywhere at all for ages having been worried about covid and it really threw me) it so I used the disabled loo. In fact I think it was my little grandson who suggested it to me. Maybe next time I go somewhere and there is a loo for men and women and I know it beforehand I’ll be ok but it threw me ( and I was desperate for the loo, too). I often use disabled loos.

Bring back the Powder Room, if you remember what Harrods used to be like back in the day, with chaise longue, comfy chairs, atomisers filled with expensive scent, a solicitous attendant with needle and cotton at the ready for wardrobe malfunctions and most of all - a relaxing “safe space”

Yes, the 'gender neutral' ones I have come across are the Ladies colonised by men. To make things worse, the ones at my work are right next to the outside door, which opens onto a public path - it was bad enough when staff, students and the general public all used it, but now there may as well be a crier outside shouting 'Come All Ye'. The men, of course, still have the Gents at their disposal too.

Because only one person at a time is in the disabled toilet.
There is no shared space, as in standard toilets.

A sex offender will find the opportunity elsewhere if a unisex toilet is not available, it is not the toilet that causes the offence.

Unisex toilets and changing areas give opportunity to people who may not have the nerve to actually seek out places to offend.

Which makes them safe FarNorth.

Just back from Italy where most of the public loos seemed to have one entrance, often one hand washing area and then a door which led to the men's on one side and a door to the women's on the other-then cubicles. Couldn't help wondering what some GNers would make of it.

In Portugal in the restaurants, there was often one toilet in a room (4 floor-to-ceiling walls with a lock. Whilst the entrance was not directly into the restaurant, there was no opportunity for any threatening or inappropriate behaviour. Other more expensive restaurants had separate sex toilets. I wonder whether abroad there isn’t so much behaviour that causes concern. It’s the behaviour that has caused the problems.

The ones on aircraft are all gender neutral of course. We usually get a choice though the shopping centre ones are all divided. Hate to say it but the ladies only ones always look and smell cleaner.

I wouldn't have a problem with that arrangement Glorianny as from what you describe, the men's and women's toilets are separated by a communal hand washing area, with one door giving access to the men's toilets (on one side?) and one door giving access to the women's (on the other side?).

Yes aircraft toilets are gender neutral only allowing one person access at a time nanna.

The problem is the enclosed nature of the communal hand washing space. The usual dogleg entrance or initial door into the run of toilets is intended to give privacy.

Which is fine until it’s privacy to assault. On an earlier thread I wrote about being trapped in a ladies loo when a male entered behind me and proceeded to masturbate in the cubicle next to me

It was terrifying but when I reported it I was told nothing could be done because the male (I won’t say she as I was told to do) identified as a woman and masturbated in private in the cubicle. This was not someone dressed as a woman but in male clothing with a male body who couldn’t be denied access to the women’s toilet because of self identification.

I was not the first person to report.

When I posted before I was told it was the best laugh on the thread. Believe me, there was nothing funny about it
