I know the last thread was taken down at the op’s request - but if anyone wants to continue discussing this major news item I’ve started this one.

Anniebach

He hasn’t resigned, his wife has named him, said he is in hospital and asked for privacy.

Yes, the BBC has just confirmed that.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 12-Jul-23 18:06:25

The Police have issued a statement saying that on the evidence that they have so far that there will be no further police action, no criminality.

Ailidh Wed 12-Jul-23 18:06:49

The police have found no offence committed.

I am very sad for him and his wife.

I don't know what else the BBC has to carry on investigating.

welbeck Wed 12-Jul-23 18:07:27

yes, as expected.
i discovered it by chance y'day, while goofling something else.
the news feed placed the headline about the bbc presenter, and then a picture of him directly underneath but in another story about pay.
so it was obvious.

Foxygloves Wed 12-Jul-23 18:08:33

It takes a lot to gobsmack me but this has.
Huw Edwards?
He is one of the highest paid in the BBC and the most senior. - I believe Gary Lineker and Zoe Ball get more than him but why oh why does a person give in to whatever urges they have to the extent where they jeopardise marriage, career, the respect of others and all of their family.

Mollygo Wed 12-Jul-23 18:09:11

Now he’s been named, will they also name the other person concerned?

Casdon Wed 12-Jul-23 18:10:51

I sincerely hope not. The young person deserves privacy as they have had this brought on their head without their permission.

Spinnaker Wed 12-Jul-23 18:11:00

I bet there won't be a welcome in the hillsides now for him.

Kate1949 Wed 12-Jul-23 18:11:36

Yes that is the name that has been going around for a while.

Galaxy Wed 12-Jul-23 18:11:45

Might be a good idea as a society to look at the damage sites such as only fans do. We wail about the mental health of young people but do bugger all about looking at what the issues might be. There are of course complex power issues around paying for sexual services, it's why for example Hugh Grant was the purchaser rather than the provider.

Spinnaker Wed 12-Jul-23 18:11:59

I feel sorry though for his wife and family.

welbeck Wed 12-Jul-23 18:13:27

Foxygloves, i think this sort of thing is a lot more common than we realise, we just don't usually find out about it.

henetha Wed 12-Jul-23 18:14:12

Hugh Edwards. I feel sorry for him too.

The young man never wanted this to happen so I hope he won’t be named.
I expect Huw Edwards will retire now, no criminal charges to be brought.

Because none of us know quite why the mother of the first young person decided to approach The Sun, we are speculating based on what we think we probably would've done under the same circumstances. I think it's a normal response, but it might imply criticism of the mother - however she obviously had her reason for doing this... and that is the important thing.

But speculating on it is not necessarily idle gossip. We all like to make sense of what is happening around us - on any issue, and when reliable information and facts are thin on the ground, this is how we deal with it... if it's an issue that we are interested in, or which bothers us.

The legality or otherwise of what actually happened between the presenter and the young person will eventually be established. For some, that will be the end of the matter, others may still have questions or concerns if indeed it turns out that no law has been broken.

As for the others that have now come forward with complaints of their own - for me, this muddies the waters to the extent that I'm now going to mentally switch off. This kind of thing happens when someone well-known has had accusations made against them. And the truth will only be established when there has been a thorough and proper investigation.

Apparently, certain sections of social media are buzzing with hints and the actual name of the person accused. Sleuthing would probably reveal who the presenter is. But I have no intention of being a sleuth because that does feel like delving into the 'prurient'. And if this all comes to nought, I'd feel rather ashamed of being so idly curious. Also, it's depressing enough without knowing the identity - just the simple fact of the possibility of yet another person in a powerful position abusing it - it's enough for the moment.

The media is making a meal of the affair - par for the course unfortunately. Click-bait and revenue. I've lost my appetite.

Oldbat1 Wed 12-Jul-23 18:17:39

Such a shock to me. Seemingly suffered with deep depression for years. Currently in hospital again and is receiving treatment. He always seems competent calm and very accomplished broadcaster. Not expected him at all - a few others sprung to mind though.

Doodledog Wed 12-Jul-23 18:19:19

Time will tell, I suppose. There is a difference between what an employer needs to know and what will interest the police.

I realise that this will not be a popular point of view, but Phillip Schofield also claimed that the exposure was bad for his mental health and the press backed off. I am not minimising the impact of MH on an individual, but it can't be used as an excuse for bad behaviour, or as a way of avoiding consequences, can it? Obviously while he is in hospital his treatment has to be given priority, but later?

NanaDada, if I could be bothered to go through 27 pages on this thread alone, and drag up comments made by you, I think it would be clear who is doing the judging of others. My remark was in response to whoever said he needed help. You will no doubt be pleased that he is getting it now. Let others worry about the possible impact of all of this on the young men who are also part of the story, and of the mother in the case.

Galaxy, I agree that something should be done about the impact of porn in general and maybe sites such as Only Fans in particular. I have no idea what, though, as it seems that it is endemic.

Galaxy Wed 12-Jul-23 18:21:36

Yes I think it's almost impossible to solve. The government announced an enquiry into porn and its impact on young people, but if that actually happened I missed it.

tickingbird Wed 12-Jul-23 18:24:53

I Hope he’s receiving the help he needs and this judging will stop. Only someone with MH issues would be so open when using these sites. It’s very sad.

Urmstongran Wed 12-Jul-23 18:25:47

I’m totally stunned. The Richard Dimbleby of our age. I feel for his wife & family how horrendous for them this must be. He will retire with mental health pressure now I should imagine. He will be in a precarious state. A tragic situation for all concerned including the troubled young man. Two families shattered.

Terribly sad, terribly complex all round, messed up with social media and god know what behind the lives involved tickingbird

I hope all in need get the help needed and I wish the Sun could be shut down on this.

DaisyAnneReturns Wed 12-Jul-23 18:35:33

So we have been given a clear example of mankind not changing from the days when the beautiful girl was beaten out of the village because somebody swore they saw her use witchcraft to kill their cow. This would then be piled on by other villagers building the story from their imaginations.

I feel so sorry for Huw Edward's and equally his family. Seeing a loved one with severe depression is terrible and incredibly distressing.

I also feel very sorry for the young person at the centre of this. Their life has also been used by others to their own ends.

Hopefully we will now let those with the power to do so continue and complete their investigations.

Kate1949 Wed 12-Jul-23 18:37:06

If Huw is ill, I hope he gets well. He will get the best care. I suffer with severe depression. It is hell. However, I agree with Doodledog that all too often celebrities cite mental health when they are found out as not being what they project on screen.

Grandma70s Wed 12-Jul-23 18:37:51

I’m surprised that some people on here appear not to have known who it was. It’s been unofficially known for some time.

I feel sad for him and his family. My anger is reserved for The Sun newspaper - what a rag.
