Am so upset and outraged that a mother was arrested with her young son by Met Police as having not paid bus fare…Mother had paid bus fare .. am physically disgusted with MET police
They have traumatised this young boy and CANNOT understand these charges..

The examples given are one offs, and one offs can be 'racist' but bear no comparison with day in, day out racism and discrimination in multiple settings- which have a cumulative effect over many many years- and can trigger strong reactions- not because of that particular event, but because of the cumulative aspect.

Unless you have close friends and family who have experienced this, you probably would not really be aware or understand.

One month, or one gig - is not going to give you a true picture of what it feels like when it happens over years and years, on a regular and repetitive basis.

Being asked, quite reasonably, to show her bus ticket has not had a social and economic impact on that woman’s whole life. Her poor behaviour may have had a lasting impact on her young child’s life and she’ll, no doubt, tell him it was the wicked white policemen being nasty due to her skin colour.

Black people are subject to the same laws as the rest of the population and that’s not racism although I agree it exists.

VioletSky

And detracting from what black people experience is quite frowned upon in many circles

Oh really??!! Seems to me that if they’re of a certain mindset anyone can be offended by anything! D’you know what the BEST thing would be? To not mention COLOUR at all!!! There’s good and bad in all people, all creeds and all cultures - no need to bring colour into it - including in the heading of the original post!

VioletSky Fri 28-Jul-23 17:43:25

OK!!!11

ImogenMac Fri 28-Jul-23 17:44:39

The issue is one of refusing to comply with lawful process in full knowledge of the consequences.

Anything else is pure conjecture

VioletSky Fri 28-Jul-23 17:46:33

Except racism still exists

And claiming "I don't see colour" is a quick and easy way to shut down any conversation about race.. but only by those saying it..

It's the equivalent of putting your fingers in your ears and saying "NOT LISTENINING!!!"

TheHappyGardener Fri 28-Jul-23 17:54:33

Definitely didn’t say I don’t SEE colour - but that it should be irrelevant !

Fleurpepper Fri 28-Jul-23 17:55:49

Thank you VS. I'd say it actually amounts to a form of racism.

Thank you VS. I'd say it actually amounts to a form of racism.

Only if you LET IT!

Iam64 Fri 28-Jul-23 18:43:53

There’s no doubt black people experience racism. For that reason, the colour of people’s skin can’t be dismissed as irrelevant.

Of course you would. However, the issue here is whether the woman kicking off in front of her child because she was asked to show her bus ticket was the victim of racism. Most people don’t believe she was. Black people can’t just cry racism every time they’re challenged. Some black people do commit crime you know.

VioletSky Fri 28-Jul-23 19:03:58

Woah

That was dark

VioletSky Fri 28-Jul-23 19:04:43

"Cry racism"

Blimey

TheHappyGardener Fri 28-Jul-23 19:14:31

Iam64 but other populations have also experienced it (eg Jews, Mexicans, Chinese) - all we can do now is move forward and in my opinion one way of doing so would be for us all to stop referencing colour at all.

VioletSky Fri 28-Jul-23 19:19:40

No

We are a diverse species and diversity is beauty we should see

No

I do agree VS - I meant (and should have said) we should stop referencing it in a -negative- or -unnecessary-,way

VioletSky Fri 28-Jul-23 19:41:56

Yes, that's racism

We don't want racism

TheHappyGardener Fri 28-Jul-23 19:51:46

So the title and original content of this post was unnecessarily inflammatory!?!

VioletSky Fri 28-Jul-23 19:54:32

No, not at all

Several police manhandling a woman over a bus ticket is never necessary and unfortunately we know that black people are disproportionately targeted for such treatment

VioletSky Fri 28-Jul-23 19:56:25

Also discussing unconscious bias

How can that be inflammatory?

Why should it make any white person angry to challenge unconscious bias?

That's silly

TheHappyGardener Fri 28-Jul-23 19:56:35

Ok, I think we’re back at page 1 of the comments 😂

VioletSky Fri 28-Jul-23 19:57:52

Or discussing white privilege?

If it makes someone angry, they can easily Google and educate themselves on what it actually means

No need to be angry about it at all

Fleurpepper Fri 28-Jul-23 20:01:46

I didn't see the video. I do believe from comments that the mother reacted badly and that it did her no favours at all, and was a bad example for her child.

What I said is that it is impossible for most of us to know how the cumulative and repetitive effect of racism leads to that unfortunate form of response. If you have close friends and family who have been constantly and repetitively stopped, questionned, often in a very confrontational was, deliberately 'pressing the buttons' - perhaps you would understand this better. She was wrong to react this way- but we have to try and understand why.

'Cry racism' blimey indeed.

VioletSky Fri 28-Jul-23 20:07:43

It's a sad watch Fleur

She was only pulling away from them towards her son

She wasn't screaming, she was confused and upset

GrannyGravy13 Fri 28-Jul-23 20:10:33

How would you describe the insults that my dear friends daughter has received on a daily basis from the black community because her partner is black and she is white.

You f***ing white h**ky stealing our men is the usual one…
