Can Sunak finally stop the dinghies?

Here he is, over in Granada.
Rishi Sunak with Giorgia Meloni, PM of Italy. Ursula vd Leyen was very friendly with ‘Dearest Rishi’. Brussels has agreed to UK access in real time of border controls.

Will progress finally be on the cards?

France offered to help with the setting up of processing centres ages ago . This was turned down by our government.

This ⏫

We knew this two years ago.

The agenda has moved on in 2 yrs all of Europe is worried about migration, not just English Channel crossing but Med as well.

That’s it, the whole of Europe is a magnet now for anyone with the money to leave their own country. It can’t go on as it is doing and Europe has to work together to stop it.Maybe at last they will do.

It's very little to do with Europe. One of the countries most affected by the refugee crisis is Turkey. 72% of refugees are housed in countries close to their country of origin.

Well, that's the problem, isn't it.

Countries in turmoil, famine in other countries.

While this carries on - and how many people give Syria a second thought now with all that is happening in Ukraine - people will flee. Most of them want to stay near their home country in the hope that one day they will be able to return and rebuild.

What is wrong with humankind that we can build pipelines across continents, under the sea, to transport oil and gas but not water to areas of drought?
How come Africa is a fertile, productive continent but people starve in some countries there?

Because of factions fighting, civil wars, conflict.

It is just depressing.

“Until someone talks to those countries and helps them cope there really will not be a solution. And the number coming here is miniscule”

We should be addressing the countries that refugees are fleeing from, if there wasn’t persecution there would be no refugees. The UN or EU can do nothing it would take the UN to solve the strife in these countries, IF the will existed.

There is none, Katie59

Let's send another rocket into space instead. Explore Mars, the possibility of setting up pods and farms on another planet instead of sorting this one out.

Well no it doesn't but that is because the figures are so wide. Bt if you want to compare what about Chad -population round about 17mill taken over 300,000 refugees
Italy about 59 million taken 127000
Jordan population 11 million taken 691,800
So which countries are being swamped? Those 9 countries are amongst the poorest especially Chad.

No.
No one can.

Callistemon21 Sat 07-Oct-23 18:27:22

Italy about 59 million taken 127000
296,000 in 2022

Italy does have a problem as the number of asylum seekers doubled since 2021.

Your post was misleading though in terms of Europe.

The refugees in Chad are living in squalid camps probably fed by UN or RC, not hotels in the UK, that would be pretty much the same in many countries bordering conflict regions

Thanks for the link Casdon.

I think the situation in Italy is concerning and to call the PM a fascist is wrong and fails to recognise the problems that country is facing.

I used the figures posted earlier on this thread for Italy.
The numbers arriving in Italy are not necessarily the number who remain there.
Germany has accommodated the largest number.
And the fact remains in terms of numbers the UK is not swamped and has a relatively small problem compared with other much poorer countries. When you take into account that much of the unrest and problems arising in the countries people are fleeing from was caused by the actions of the US and the UK it is even more shocking. It's time the UK stopped denying responsibility and accepted that it should and could take more asylum seekers.

maddyone Sun 08-Oct-23 10:00:32

It’s been reported today that a Gambian man, who arrived in the UK illegally, and was dealing drugs in Edinburgh, and who was convicted of raping a woman at knife point, was not allowed to be deported because he might not be able to receive proper medical care in his own country.
As long as stories such as this continue to be reported, and similar stories are reported regularly, then the population will remain opposed to this situation where people from all over the world can arrive in the UK and be given the right to remain for spurious reasons. This needs to be tackled in my opinion. And in the opinion of many other people.

I don't understand how they find the money to pay the smugglers. I'm aware some are loans to the smugglers, but all of them?

I also don't understand why they risk their lives in a dinghy when Europe is some respects is better than the UK.

Many havn’t got the money, they agree to be indentured to the gang in the UK and are used as slaves in a whole range of illegal activities.
