There’s more chance of the average Palestinian eating a pork dinner than believing what Israel would say to them.

Of course which was why my first sentence said Israel needed to abide by some of the UN resolutions. With drawing from some of the occupied territories would be a starting point.

Agreed- and no-one knows that what friends from Israel say about Netanyahu are conspiracy theories. They have lived under his ult-right Government for a long time, and so have their family. I trust their judgement on him.

As far as judging some differently to others, surely it makes sense. Hamas has been proscribed a terrorist organisation by the U.S., the U.K., Israel, Australia, Japan and the European Union to name but a few. And I don't know of any terrorist organisation that abides by said conventions.

Israel on the other hand is a State, widely recognised throughout the world as having legitimacy and a permanent seat at the UN (since 1949).

Hopefully you can see that the two are not equivalent.

I have just started to read reports about a deal between Saudi Arabia, The USA and Israel that was going through until the recent massacre. I can’t help but wonder if Gaza (probably with the backing of Iran) has decided now is the time to stop this deal ….. and I don’t know if this event has slipped under the radar in any of the comments since there are quite a few.

I don’t know if it’s been mentioned that the army reservists were refusing to work for Netanyahu earlier this year. I tried to do a link yesterday but it was a long article and I kept losing it. A lot of things have been happening recently.

This is part of the reason why the security before the Hamas attack was so relaxed, because the young liberal Israelis were refusing to back the hardline policies.

It wasn’t just the “young liberals” it was people of all ages protesting against the proposed anti-democratic judicial changes. Women were also up in arms against Natenyahu’s government, as their rights are being undermined - again by the far right. They called it “the Talibanization” of women’s rights.

If Natenyahu took his eye off the ball, it wasn’t because of the young liberal Israelis.

I’m unclear why you made that connection tbh.

Grany Hamas are the terrorists, they use the civilian population as human shields, they take aid money to buy weapons.

Tom Tugenhat (sp) stated in an interview this morning that there is proof of Hamas digging up pipelines meant to carry water to fabricate pipe bombs and makeshift launchers.

No excuse for the vile atrocities committed by Hamas but IDF troops had been focused on the West Bank because of increasing concerns about security. Israeli settlers were moving into Palestinian areas, behaving illegally and provocatively but demanding protection. This was covered by Harari, Jewish humanitarian, who did a Trip podcast. The reservists are not "young liberals" they are former members of IDF who disagree with the current extreme right wing policies that would seem to have their roots in religious fundamentalism.

Unfortunately this means that the only time young people come into contact with Palestinians is during their time in the IDF which is a pretty hostile environment. Not great for facilitating mutual understanding and respect!

A quick internet search shows that approximately 5,000 Palestinians are currently serving in the Israeli Army (IDF)

I think your assumption that the first time Israeli’s come into contact with Palestinians is erroneous, as there are Palestinians living in Israel, travelling into Israel for work or medical reasons.

Yes, that's true there are Palestinians who are Israeli citizens and they would be required to do military service and of course,you are correct, perhaps I should have said "many" rather than suggesting that it is all of them. Thanks for correcting me.

That’s the theory, but there is a great deal of “draft dodging” as well as religious exemptions, in practice those not “willing” have to do community type service. Women can have most roles they are deployed in security roles, not front line combat units.

Why is it "distasteful" to discuss what has been a fact for many years. Israel is supported and funded by US Jews and US presidents often rely on votes from certain sections of the population. The interesting thing is how many Palestinians are now resident in the US and what will happen to the Arab/American vote.

I do think there’s some truth in their comments though.

In my opinion the current situation all over the Middle East is far too dangerous to warrant flippant remarks, based on political bias.

The events of the last 12 days has a high chance of spilling over into other states, Hezbollah has already waded in if POTUS visiting, his Secretary of State along with James Cleverly and Mr. Sunak has managed to calm things down slightly it can only be a good thing.
