A second thread to share our thoughts and prayers on this moving situation

The Middle East has always been a tinder box and I fear it always will be.

I hope you are wrong Glorianny

Retribution- a word you have used several times in relation to the events of 7/10. Another word for retribution is payback! Twist and deflect all you like but it’s clear what you meant.

So what you are saying is that you don't believe any Islamic site about what has happened to Palestinian women. That's interesting but not really relevant is it?
The Palestinians and others certainly believe it.

No that’s not what I’m saying but it’s interesting that your sources are Islamic sites which are unlikely to be impartial. As for not being relevant? Why did you use them then?

I think that it would be better to be very cautious about what we see on social media. Rory Stewart warned that there was an enormous amount of false information being disseminated and that it is almost impossible to know the truth of it. I am beginning to learn that lesson, particularly in relation to claimed atrocities, by either side. Both sides have been found to lie and exaggerate in the past and it is happening again.

This reporter is the Foreign Correspondent for Fox News, this was broadcast on the Network, not social media.

Mr Trump has a lot to answer for. His cries of Fake News have succeeded in unsettling us. M like the boy who cried wolf, though sadly in his case, without the wolf arriving to eat him - so far

GG13 Even established media outlets have been caught out and cherry pick their news.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 21-Oct-23 19:09:56

Please not Fox News!! They have been fined enormous amounts for knowingly broadcasting lies.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 21-Oct-23 19:11:04

The BBC and Sky have both been caught out.

So what news outlets can we post from?

TBH I think that it is so very difficult to know exactly what is happening day to day. And I am guilty as anyone and listen to the news outlet that that echoes my world view. But I am trying to be very disciplined and make a balanced judgement as far as I can, which is why I think it is so important to remember that history did not start on 7th October.

I avoid all outlets that i know to be second rate or downright misleading like GB News or Fox and instead read measured and balanced articles by known experts together with listening to various podcasts, bbc programmes etc, that I hope is giving me the ability to judge the whole sorry situation with at least a degree of knowledge and fairness.

Lots of fake news around but I don't have a problem in believing that Hamas are capable of being completely inhumane and doing things that we find totally abhorrent. However, it doesn't change my mind with regard to how Israel should be conducting themselves in Gaza. We don't win anything if we lose our own humanity in the fight. Israel needs to stay within the law.

BBC reporting hasnt been reliable I am afraid, as I say they are becoming hard to defend. I have use sky news quite a bit but that has it's own issues.

Yes of course, but we must be so careful - it has been shown that there are videos purporting to be from the current war, but in fact are from previous fracas. So everything we see from both sides is trying to manipulate our thoughts, opinions and emotions, and it appears that truth is the first casualty.

TBH I think that is what most posters have been saying, no-one is excusing the vile behaviour of Hamas. It doesn't mean I accept the video as being genuine though. It could well be and the instruction books discussed on the Telegraph website might also be real, but we all know that both sides deal in fake news.

Absolutely.
The conflicts in the Middle East have been happening for hundreds - thousands - of years and we are being unduly optimistic to think they can be resolved.

Yes, it will take a brave and strong administration on the Israel and Palestinian side, along with the absence of terrorist organisations stirring the pot…

Sorry if you misunderstood tickingbird but it is your views on Islamic sites which are irrrelevant. Regardless of your views many of those fighting on the Palestine side will believe the things I posted. That is why they are important.
You may choose to only look at Israeli sources I choose to gather wider information.

But your refusal to even consider the information may be correct simply because of where it came from illustrates vividly why conflicts accelerate. People with fixed ideas unable to see the other side or consider there may be another point of view, entrenched attitudes.

There are 100’s of videos of todays protests, sons are deplorable, some are being investigated by the Police for hate speech.

More deflection. I haven’t misunderstood anything and I haven’t posted anything from any Israeli sources. I view all the news channels and listen to many different viewpoints aired.

I noticed that another member of GN posted an article from The Jewish Chronicle a couple of days ago and that was dismissed as unreliable, not necessarily by you I might add.

As for not believing your sources, I haven’t said that either and I don’t disbelieve that Israeli forces have behaved appallingly at times.

However, you still haven’t addressed the issue of retribution as you put it.

Don’t come back at me with answers to comments I haven’t made and please don’t lecture me about entrenched views and an inability to see both sides as, not only is it untrue, you display little, if any of that in any of your posts.

So you plainly misunderstood my statement about relevance being that your views really are irrelevant and it is the beliefs of those involved that matters.
Saying something isn't impartial (and I believe you added there were no observer) is tantamount to saying you don't believe the account.

Retribution is an act undertaken in response to a violent act. It is undoubtedly behind most conflicts.
Now I won't be responding to any more of your posts I find your inability to accept responsibility for your statements difficult to understand.
