Johnson goes to Israel!

After his visit to Ukraine at the start of the war proved beneficial, Boris Johnson's current trip to Israel smells of desperation. Having been slammed by the recent Covid witnesses as chaotic, fickle, weak and incompetent, first he tried putting out a written defence. Now he’s gone off to Israel claiming to show support for the Netanyahu government. Why? It’s not his role. He can add nothing. Who is paying - flight, security etc? Of course, its us the tax payers. As Netanyahu's future looks less secure, this can’t be seen as anything other than a weak man seeking any route to divert attention from his own current humiliation.

Is Blair still some sort of peace envoy to the Middle East or did that fizzle out?

maddyone Sun 05-Nov-23 12:53:34

I’ve just heard that BJ is going to Israel with the former PM of Australia.
Don’t know what their objective is though, it didn’t say.

Blair did help to bring about peace in Ireland and Yugoslavia though.

🤔

I thought Paddy Ashdown was a peacemaker in the Balkans.

Since then he started the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change.

Apparently both expressing solidarity with Netanyahu.

Good grief. They really shouldn't be meddling.

I couldn’t believe the encouragement BJ gave to the Ukrainian government to fight a war with no winners against Russia. Still no resolution in sight there. How many deaths?

Personally, if it works[doubtful], and if he doesnt make things any worse, I am for it.

The situation is in desperate need of peace. Desperate.

I think in thst instance he was right.
Poor Ukraine is fighting for all of Europe.

Johnson should not be meddling in this highly volatile situation. Based on his past form he is likely to put his foot in his mouth and make things worse. Hopefully no-one of any significance will take any notice of him🤞🤞🤞

I agree with your last statement Calli and thank god Boris gave such robust support to the Ukraine. Sadly I think the war in the Middle East is taking precedence and poor Ukraine will not be supplied with what it desperately needs this winter by Europe nor America.

Oldbat1 Sun 05-Nov-23 13:30:53

Omg! Bj a known liar and a disgraced ex politician what on earth can he offer? He was sacked from being foreign secretary post after many faux pas and then in the Tories madness became PM. Perhaps he is now acting for GB news. The UK lunging from disaster to disaster. I despair!

And Mo Mowlam brokered the peace in N.Ireland although Blair made sure she was kept in the background when he signed the agreement.

I agree that he was right to show such support for Ukraine.

I worry that Ukraine has disappeared from the news here while we have constant coverage of the Middle East conflagration.

They are both dreadful situations. I just don't see quite what BJ will offer in Israel/Gaza given he is now seen as an untrustworthy buffoon.

ronib Sun 05-Nov-23 14:44:26

But there’s no end in sight for Ukraine? Russia is so much better equipped to fight a long war. Russia will win and a negotiation is long overdue imo.
BJ was very influential at the beginning of the Ukrainian crisis and it was the wrong course of action to encourage.

All things to all people in my opinion. It's a photo op just like Ukraine. Maybe they'll name a street in a kibbutz after him. Worst PM I can recall since WW2.

Not Boris, nobody would recognize him

I doubt if Netanyahu or Hamas will care a Scooby Doo about Johnson’s opinions.

Gala Sun 05-Nov-23 17:23:57

Surely he's just a freelance journalist these days. He represents nobody but himself.

Would you have the UK support Russia? Or give no support to Ukraine even though the rest of Europe, just about, and the US are doing their best to help Ukraine defend itself against an aggressor like the foul Putin?

Oreo Sun 05-Nov-23 18:16:13

I was surprised to see Boris has gone to Israel, wouldn’t have thought there was much if anything he could say that our government hasn’t already said.On the other hand, if the ex Australian PM has also gone there I guess Israel is pleased to have as many friends as possible.

Perhaps you're too young to remember the Soviet Union, ronib, the struggles for freedom and the jubilation as one country after another regained their independence.

Parsley3 Sun 05-Nov-23 18:18:28

Surely, he can only be going as a journalist looking for a scoop. He has no authority to represent the UK in any other capacity.
