Johnson goes to Israel!

After his visit to Ukraine at the start of the war proved beneficial, Boris Johnson's current trip to Israel smells of desperation. Having been slammed by the recent Covid witnesses as chaotic, fickle, weak and incompetent, first he tried putting out a written defence. Now he’s gone off to Israel claiming to show support for the Netanyahu government. Why? It’s not his role. He can add nothing. Who is paying - flight, security etc? Of course, its us the tax payers. As Netanyahu's future looks less secure, this can’t be seen as anything other than a weak man seeking any route to divert attention from his own current humiliation.

So Maybee Tony Blair gets that pension and has a huge amount of money! Why pick on Botis? I do not care about him but in this casd i cannot see why you are complaining?Going to Israel is not exactly glamorous. The ex Australian foreign minister Scott Morrison is also there. Maybe showing moral support and they were not meeting Netanahu )(spelling?) Do give up this constant carry on about Boris. Let him fade away if that is possible.

The Covid inquiry is descending into finger pointing gossip. The real practical issues which may help in any future pandemic are not being addressed. Daniel Hannan writes a very interesting article in last Sundays Telegraph which is quite supportive of Boris.

‘Finger pointing’
You’re having a laugh

So he’s in the news because he’s been to Israel. And he’s going to be on GB News. He isn’t exactly fading away, is he.

He’s probably claiming it from Public Duty Costs Allowance (PDCA), which all former Prime Ministers can use. I agree with OP, it’s totally inappropriate for him to be going to Israel.

Scott Morrison was the Australian Prime Minister until last year. He held various Ministerial offices but not Foreign Minister as far as I'm aware. I could be wrong.

Not easy when he is constantly in the spotlight for one reason or another.

Comparisons of Blair and BoJo are wide of the mark. Blair was re-elected with a substantial majority after the Iraq war (much to the chagrin of the noisy Left) and had a significant record of achievement (trashed by the Corbynites). BoJo has been dumped by the Tories after the Downing Street parties during Covid were revealed despite his denials and the Covid Inquiry is revealing the utter chaos in government over which he presided. No comparison at all.

Oh I don't know. Both needed major inquiries after they were PM. Both seem to be money grabbers. Both left their party a wreck. Both seem to think they are able to fix anything in spite of evidence to the contrary.

Blair, like many another before and after him, was (and is) corrupted by power.

Not quite, Glorianny. The Iraq Inquiry by Chilcot absolved Blair whereas the Covid Inquiry thus far shows BoJo was inept and presided over a chaotic and toxic No. 10. It is true that both have raised money after their period in office, as did Thatcher, but Blair and Thatcher created charitable foundations whereas BoJo seems to need money for current expenses to support a wife who likes expensive wallpaper and his children by various women. Not quite the same.

The Chilcot Inquiry was a whitewash. Blair should never have been absolved of anything.

Blair's central error in Iraq was certainty based on poor advice from MI6 not persondeceit.

On Chilcot, the Financial Times reported, 'Every previous inquiry into Britain's decision to invade Iraq has swiftly been condemned by the public as a "whitewash". Such a description hardly applies to the monumental inquest that has been published by Sir John Chilcot. ... After Lord Hutton's report in 2003 and the Butler report the following year, the one thing Sir John could not have afforded to produce was another report that was dismissed as a whitewash.'

Obviously people will believe what they want to believe.

This thread is not about Blair- but about Johnson going to Israel- in what capacity, in whose name?
