A wise move? Or will he come to regret it?

James O’Brien has described it as “deck chairs on the Titanic”.

Next election if will "all change" a bit like musical chairs

What exactly is ‘Turbulent Times’ ronib, and why should anybody believe what it says? My Google search, having never heard of it before, seems to indicate it is a one man and his dog operation, not a credible news source, so I’m hoping somebody can enlighten me.

My Google search revealed that it's a one man outfit run by somebody who is described in one review as "the slightly unhinged obsessive who spends every day blogging about why everyone else's Brexit is stupid except his to twelve people."

I don't think I'll be putting "Turbulent Times" on my regular reading list.

Maybe I'll arrange a blind date for him with Dominic Cummings and secretly record the encounter. It could be amusing.

growstuff Fri 17-Nov-23 04:33:56

PS. I couldn't find out whether he has a dog!

Casdon said growstuff did you consider the Turbulent Times analysis? Feels as if you are very quick to defend the Home Office? The ‘rogues’ are not processing asylum applications in a timely way and therefore there’s a huge backlog. I think this government wants to expand the migrant workforce and normally this could be a sensible move. However as we all know housing, medical care and simple strain on local populations needs to be worked through.
My understanding is that last year saw 605000 legal immigrants and that Sunak wants to increase this number.
It’s a bit of a mystery as to why asylum seekers are having to wait a very long time for processing - it does feel that instead of spending on the Rwandan solution that more resources could be used here to increase throughput.

I have never understood why they can't be returned to France, the SAFE COUNTRY they left to sponge off the Uk. They are escorted halfway by the French then are picked up by RNLI or border force and the Uk put them in hotels. Send them back, France is safe enough but not as daft as the Uk government.

Why would/should France accept them?

Well I won't be voting for Sunak now. I'll be voting Reform unless Suella Braverman comes back as Conservative leader. Bad mistake.

I will probably do that too we need a change, tired of both main parties. We need to secure our borders, we as a country do not have enough resources for illegal immigrants, there is no social housing for the British and the NHS is struggling. Those coming on small boats need returning. to the SAFE country of France,, let Macron pay their hotel costs , he has the open border that allowed them into France as a stepping stone to the Uk

Yippeee! Another one wanting to divide the opposition to Labour.

Just done a checklist ...

Am I British? Yes.
Am I an immigrant? No.
Am I an "ordinary" folk? Yes.
Am I poor? Yes.

Do I support a right-wing populist outfit? No!

Growstuff and Casdon Richard North is a former local government official with extensive experience of the EU. He is well informed and opinionated. He sometimes writes with his son Pete North. His other blog was the EU Referendum.
On the whole, I don’t have a problem with him and see him as a good source of information and opinion. I don’t swallow his words hook line and sinker. I thought he made some good points about SB recently.

I am absolutely enraged that Cameron is back in a top job. This man trashed the UK and walked away - he should not now have a position of power handed to him on a plate. Even more infuriating is the way this deal has been done. Totally undemocratic! The man is not an elected representative of the people; he’s accountable to no constituents; he’s been made a lifetime peer TODAY just so that he can become foreign secretary; all done in secret, behind closed doors. Shame on the king for agreeing to award him a peerage. Shame on Sunak for such egregious manipulation. Apparently the speaker of the HoC is very unhappy about the situation - do you know what Lyndsey, you’re not the only one! What a shining beacon of democracy the UK is … NOT!

I agree with you, what a fiasco the government is! Only for a year though then the next circus comes to town. Get The Monster Raving Loony Party in, it might do better🤣

When Coffey was Health Minister I thought she was a perfect example of what not to do to look after your health.

But of a bundle for a Health Minister - shouldn't that person set an example? Not smoking and overeating

Growstuff, there are a lot of ordinary folk just trying to get by, we seem to have got overlooked by the government. If the Lords can have over £300 per day to sit comfortably and snooze, why can't the the basic state pension be the same per week? Just wondering...

CoolCoco Fri 17-Nov-23 06:42:17

The Supreme Court judgement states, inter alia, '...Rwanda has a poor human rights record. In 2021, the UK government criticised Rwanda for “extrajudicial killings, deaths in custody, enforced disappearances and torture”. UK government officials have also raised concerns about constraints on media and political freedom.'

I wonder how 'emergency legislation' addresses the inconvenient facts of those transgressions?

So could the government pass a law to change any facts it likes?

MayBee70 Fri 17-Nov-23 07:32:29

Well, they could take us out of the ECHR and then argue that those things are acceptable. Which isn’t totally beyond the realms of possibility. Just think, this fighting talk is coming from Sunak. Just imagine the situation we’d be in now if Braverman was PM (which she might easily have been).

I still couldn't shoot myself in the foot by supporting a right-wing, populist government.

And I'm just as much an "ordinary folk" as all the rest of "ordinary folk".

No. But it seems to be prepared to try. It will then use the fascist trope that the courts turning them down is the fault of those judges and our legal system.

Braverman is already saying the government must exempt the new plan from all legal challenges.

I read recently the between 10% and 15% would vote fascist without realising that was what they were doing. I'm sorry I haven't time to hunt down the source but it does suggest some are swallowing what chimes with their bias without checking what these people intend.

DaisyAnneReturns Fri 17-Nov-23 08:41:47

RVK1CR, I wonder if you are happy with what they are threating the unemployed with? It seems to include withdrawal of NHS services. Those one we pay insurance (NI) for.

Who do you think they will come for next? Those past state pension age (unless rich enough to pay privately)? Those not earning enough?

ronib Fri 17-Nov-23 10:53:42

Casdon I am more phased by the idea of a Home Office at odds with the government than whether a blogger has a dog. But each to their own….

Iam64 Fri 17-Nov-23 11:29:07

On the subject of the slow processing of asylum applications, we shouldn’t forget Cameron included “getting rid of pen pushers “ in his austerity programme
So, reduce numbers of staff, alongside increasing their work load and don’t be surprised if things don’t run as well as you want

ronib Fri 17-Nov-23 11:38:23

Iam64 Cameron might have reduced pen pushers but I think now the numbers are at an all time high.
Turbulent Times yesterday emphasised that the Home Office is not behind the government at all on immigration policy. I am not surprised in retrospect since migration is on an upwards trajectory.

ronib Fri 17-Nov-23 12:06:28

The best course for the government is to take immigration away from the Home Office and set up a completely new and separate department…..

Casdon Fri 17-Nov-23 12:10:13

ronib this will help to put you in the picture from a far more credible source.
migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk/resources/briefings/the-uks-asylum-backlog/

ronib Fri 17-Nov-23 12:30:05

Casdon the source might be more credible that’s true but the overall picture is that the system is not working properly. Caseworkers are deciding 2.7 cases individually a week?

Casdon Fri 17-Nov-23 12:51:50

Did you read the article ronib, it gives strong clues as to why the system is in disarray?

Meanwhile for those Marsh family fans, here’s part four of the Suella trilogy.

But I know what’s going on. We have an incompetent government who couldn’t organise a p… up in a brewery, let alone direct anybody else to do it.
