GN hasn't had much to say in the last few days, perhaps like me you have been holding your breath and hoping to see hostages being released and aid flowing into Gaza. I am not religious so I can't pray but I am hoping that this release of hostages continues and this breathing space gives an opportunity for a long term peace plan to evolve.

I typed ancient but ancestral is also apt.

Probably because the money keeps rolling in GrannyGravy as long as the Gazan’s are kept poor. I wouldn’t be surprised to see huge amounts of money donated to Gaza when all this is over, but wonder how much of it will actually be spent on the Gazans.

The majority will always be poor. Over 2 million people, half of them are under 18 living on a piece of land the size of the Isle of Wight with little in the way of accessible resources, will always be poor. It will take billions to rebuild the basic infrastructure, let alone house people. It is the one million children that I care about most, where will they live, what about their education, health care etc whilst Gaza is rebuilt? These are not people who can leave to claim asylum in a safe country unless Egypt or Israel allows them out and who will accept them? They will just join the queue of Syrians, Afghans, Iraqis, South Sudanese etc looking for somewhere safe to live. It is an absolute tragedy and I feel very sad that the incursion has started up again as it will cause even more devastation.

Totally agree with you Foxie your post is both succinct and compassionate.

maddyone Fri 01-Dec-23 09:46:09

We know the Gazans are poor foxie and that’s because millions have been diverted from relief for the Gazans into making Hamas rich! And building a war machine able to carry out a massacre of 1400 people.
We know the Gazans are poor, why don’t others understand that money has been diverted?

GrannyGravy13 Fri 01-Dec-23 09:54:28

foxie48 very sad that the incursion has started again

I think every sentient person is sad at the plight of all innocent civilians caught up in this war which was undoubtedly started deliberately on 7/10 by Hamas.

maddyone Fri 01-Dec-23 10:01:59

Maybe the Hamas terrorists who entered Jerusalem on the western side yesterday and shot dead three Israelis signify that Hamas wanted the ceasefire to end?
Why else poke the bear?

I doubt if anybody doesn't understand that money has been diverted.

I cannot be the only one who has watched Hamas top honchos give TV interviews.

Their sole purpose is to destroy Israel and all Jews anyway it can.

Because that diverts attention away from the narrative of ‘poor Gazans’ ? Or diverts attention from the fact that many Gazans actually do support Hamas?
As witnessed in the scene of jeering crowds around the hostages being released the other day.

silverlining48 Fri 01-Dec-23 10:10:28

Of course money has been diverted politics is like that. Especially when a country is at almost permanent war. Power corrupts. I am not keen on our politicians for that very reason.

It will take squillions to rebuild Gaza but will it, can it ever be rebuilt for its people to return. The north is flattened snd the south will be. Listening to an Israeli spokesman on the radio this morning saying they have told Gazans where to hide in the south, that was where they were sent fir safety and it really does not surprise me that they plan to destroy the south. Where are 2 million people going to hide and be safe in that tiny space. Sadly they are not safe snd they know it, they must be terrified. There is no escape and thousands more innocent people will lose their lives . It’s a tragedy beyond tragedies.

foxie48 there are posts on this and other Israel/Palestine threads where there is little to no acknowledgement of Hamas’s repeated acts of violence (not just 7/10) bombings along with funnelling money to offshore accounts and building extensive property portfolios as opposed to spending it on the civilian population that elected them.

All blame is directed at Israel.

I find the above unfathomable.

I don't think that is true, the majority of posters abhor what happened on 7/11 but they also abhor what is happening in Gaza. Like most on here I do not condone the actions of terrorists but neither do I condone the actions of this Israeli Government. Unlike you, I do not believe in linear causality, it is too simplistic. If you want a simplistic view why not go one step further back and ask why did Hamas plan this act of terrorism? I think the reason was much more about the impending peace treaty between Israel and Saudi Arabia and the fact that the world was ignoring what was happening in Palestine, especially the West Bank illegal settlements, but who knows? I certainly don't the mind of Hamas or Netanyahu but this won't be solved by bombing Gaza to bits.

Oreo Fri 01-Dec-23 10:16:53

How will the problem of hamas be solved then? They are rich and powerful thanks to money poured into Gaza by well meaning idiots. They are terrorist crazies with a cause, to kill as many Jews as possible.Going after them and reducing their numbers and their power seems to be the only way.

foxie48 Fri 01-Dec-23 10:18:46

don't know the mind

GrannyGravy13 Fri 01-Dec-23 10:19:13

foxie48 I have posted that the attack on 7/10 was in all probability prompted by the impending signing of the trilateral peace agreement.

I am in no way naive on the past of Israel and Palestine.

I am not a believer in linear causality as you put it.

Neither am I in denial that if the attacks on 7/10 hadn’t occurred the current war would not be happening.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 01-Dec-23 10:20:17

Oreo the more I read on GN the more I understand why my Jewish friends in the U.K. are concerned for their families safety.

Oreo Fri 01-Dec-23 10:23:18

There are those cheerleaders for hamas here in the UK don’t anyone doubt that.

maddyone Fri 01-Dec-23 10:43:43

It’s such a terrible situation and to be honest, none of us know what the answer is. Andrew Neil said on Question Time last night that the time for a two state solutions has long since passed which I found very dispiriting. I wonder if he’s right, because if he is, then there is apparently no solution.
Hamas aren’t going away. Years ago in the 70s the PLO was busy hijacking planes and even a cruise ship if I remember rightly. Terrorism has become more deadly and more sophisticated since then and I really, truly can’t see any solution in Israel.
Back to the OP. At least two more hostages were released last night, but probably there will be no more any time soon, since hostilities appear to have started again. And it’s reported that the youngest hostage and his brother and mother are now dead. Along with all the thousands of others.

maddyone Fri 01-Dec-23 10:48:11

I’ve said it before but just to reiterate, my Jewish friends deplore Netanyahu but totally support Israel in it’s stated aim to totally disable Hamas.
They also think that there is now much antisemitism rearing it’s head all over the world. They are critical of The Red Cross which they feel have failed to demand to see the hostages and of the UN which they feel has not been supportive of the situation for Jewish people, especially Jewish women.

silverlining48 Fri 01-Dec-23 10:48:53

Israel is powerful Gaza is not.
Israel will win Gaza will lose but for the first time ever Israel is being publicly criticised by many, even by their best friend USA. .
I have only seen criticism of Israeli government and not Jews on the GN posts related to this conflict,
However Netanyahu was voted into power yet again .... but then not everyone voted for him, so he now has an even more far right wing crowd to support his premiership, which was bound to bring trouble.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 01-Dec-23 10:51:04

maddyone your last two posts were spot on 👍

silverlining48 Fri 01-Dec-23 10:55:56

The two state solution has been a dead dog for decades. Sadly,

Gaza itself may not be powerful but Hamas is

Hamas is extremely wealthy, allegedly has Iranian backing (China backs Iran), Hezbollah is on its side as are all Islamic terrorist organisations,

Hamas can and probably will initiate terror attacks across the globe. If not physically carried out by Hamas it will be one of its supporting groups or loan wolf.

It is best to remember hat the security servicesof all countries has to be accurate (lucky) every time, a terrorist only needs to be lucky once to cause death, destruction and fear…
