Migration comparison

Australia is struggling too it seems.

‘ A big increase in arrivals (up 103 per cent from last year to 681,000) only partially offset a small increase in overseas migrant departures (up 8.8 per cent to 226,600). The underlying cause was the return of international students.’

There really is no comparison between Australia and the UK. We have and aging population your is comparatively young.
Our government seems happy to kill off the elderly and your government is seeking to double its population.

I want to know what online deformation is ? Sounds like a good new word. One of those new British things? Does it lead to some sort of deformity?

I presume this is to tell me I misspelt the word. Do you have a go at those in wheelchairs and on crutches too nanna8?

Our biggest problem in Australia with immigration is housing. We are seeing a sudden influx of high rise apartments in the outer suburbs of Sydney. There are literally thousands of new apartments housing new immigrants but unfortunately the local infrastructure hasn’t been upgraded to cope with the sudden increase of population. Consequently existing schools are very overcrowded, roads suffer constant traffic congestion etc. It doesn’t appear that sufficient planning was put in place before adding to our migration numbers. We need to have better thought put into new schools, roads etc to solve these difficulties.

Can’t dispute that comparison.

Uncalled for but not unexpected. I have just never heard the word before. Happy Christmas to you, sweetie.

DAR report away my love. I didn’t mention you (or anyone else for that matter) by name, or even inference.

What is wrong here is that it appears grown up women who don’t appear to be able to debate or discuss any topic without resorting to threats and insults.

What a sad indictment of the times!

Have a lovely weekend, one and all, and maybe do what I do almost every day, remember there’s always others worse off than ourselves and many of us live in safe, comfortable homes, without fear of being imprisoned (or worse) for expressing our opinions, however much we might disagree with each other.

You have obviously not heard of the word dyslexia either nana. For years pedantry has been kept to the thread of that name for the very reason that we don't know what effort it may take for people to write on GN. GNetters did not pick other up for such petty reasons. I see, with our recent influx of members, such thought no longer matters.

Casdon Sat 16-Dec-23 09:47:34

Come on now DaisyAnne, nanna8 has been on Gransnet for years, longer than you have unless you’ve changed your name in the meantime. There’s no need to respond like that, I’m sure she didn’t mean to be unkind.

DaisyAnneReturns Sat 16-Dec-23 09:47:40

Your salutation at the beginning of your post was DaisyAnneReturns Cossy so you certainly did, not only mention me but addressed your whole post to me.

You then went on to say "I’m quite saddened to hear some of your views on migrants," and wrote as if I was someone with the complete antithesis of my actual views.

When given the opportunity to apologised/explain you seem to find sarcasm the answer.

I wonder just who the grown up women, who doesnt appear to be know how to debate or discuss any topic without making a personal attack, actually is Cossy

I think DaisyAnne has been on Gransnet for a long time.

Nanna8 has also been a Gransnetter for a long time and perhaps, like many of us, has been subjected to DAR's rather sharp retorts and retaliated for once.

Nanna8 I'm sure you didn't mean to be unkind.

A Merry Christmas to One and All.

I have also been on here for many years Casdon. Not right at the beginning but not long after that. For personal reasons I took a long break at one point. Yes I changed my name when I returned, making it clear I had done so; I hadn't expected to return. I also made it clear when I added "returned" to DaisyAnne because I had killed my computer and couldn't seem to use the old login. I don't think think this is a hanging offence.

I do feel there has been a change recently. You don't have to be part of the influx to go with the changes they want to make. Of course people are "entitled " to make those changes but I am "entitled " not to care for some of them.

Callistemon21 Sat 16-Dec-23 10:15:11

I don't know what changes you mean, DAR or what you mean by influx which sounds like a rude and sly dig at other Gransnetters.

Nanna8 has been on here for a long time.

I think most of us have been subjected to your sharp retorts over the years, yes, they are best ignored but perhaps you don't realise that they can cause distress to some less robust posters.

We do have an ageing population but saying our government is happy to kill off the elderly is ridiculous. There may well be incompetence but not cruel intention.

Casdon Sat 16-Dec-23 10:16:55

It just seems to me that threads get very heated these days when somebody makes an innocuous comment which is meant in a lighthearted way DaisyAnne, maybe we all need to chillax (sorry, that word should be in the Naff thread), I do think it’s rare that people intend their comments to be taken as personal insults, I’ve been on here for years too and I still see comments sometimes that surprise me - and I know I offend other people on occasion too, it’s best to let it go over your head though.

nanna8 Sat 16-Dec-23 10:22:44

DA has had many manifestations. Fair enough . I do wish the unpleasant and uncalled for comments about Australia would cease, especially from someone who doesn’t live her. Even though I know you have visited as you once claimed in a previous life.

Are you demanding I stop "feeling" that way Oreo? Because it is how I feel.

With an extremist government it can hardly be surprising that people have extreme reactions. If they are constantly cruel in other areas, I deeply suspect that is the Conservative nature.

Not many Nana. Why exaggerate?

Are you no longer going to comment on the UK? What comments were unpleasant exactly?

DaisyAnneReturns Sat 16-Dec-23 10:37:50

Ah, sorry, I thought that was a general comment Nanna but it is, yet again a personal attack.

I'm really don't think I could have commented about visiting Australia and i have pretty strong reasons for believing that. I do have Australian family members though. Are you getting people muddled do you think?

It wasn't meant to be "sly" Callistemon. What a nasty little word that is.

It was meant to be pointed. If I have noticed changes and you haven't it's most likely because you like them and I don't. Both if those are allowed, I believe. Or is this another case of telling people what they may think or say. There certainly seems to be an increase in that.

Callistemon21 Sat 16-Dec-23 15:16:06

Exactly what change do you mean, DAR?

Changes to the site by GNHQ?
Or an influx of new posters who wish to change GN and not for the better?

If you meant the former then I must apologise for misunderstanding what you meant.

Extremist. Really. Oh dear me.

Because waiting lists are so long, care home places are so scarce and home nursing inadequate patients must be dying or deteriorating before they get what they need, although I’ve never seen any figures.

I think many older people are stuck in hospital, unable to be discharged when what they need is care but not necessarily medical treatment.

Bed blocking has been a problem for years.

We need to bring back convalescent homes, a transition between hospital and being discharged home.

Agreed!

Been saying that for ages. Especially in rural areas, carers have to travel quite a distance to see patients at home, so they end up seeing somebody for (say) 15 minutes but travelling an hour. Agencies aren't willing to take patients like that on, so they end up staying in hospital. It would be far better to have convalescent homes.
