Bizarre headline in Daily Express.

The headline reads Map shows incredible new transport routes planned across Europe - but UK misses out but it seems to have originally been posted as Scheming EU countries leave UK out of ‘landmark’ transport plans as map reveals betrayal. (https://twitter.com/jonwensley/status/1739608672110530778)

Do either if those make sense to anyone? Seriously? And the map ... Are they completely mad? As someone who wants a closer relationship with the EU I can imagine using this map as part of my argument in a debate to do just that. But it was the lies in MSM papers that took us out of Europe. What, exactly, do they want now?

If someone can explain I would be grateful.

I don't think I said that people were without hope, flappergirl. What I did say was they felt they had been failed. You can own a house and still feel politicians have failed you for the reasons I highlighted.

From the London Economic

Has the Daily Express ever come this close to self awareness before? The penny almost, almost dropped this week, when the publication flew into a blind rage about an EU mega-project. A new trail transport system is set to connect the continent – while excluding the UK.

New EU rail project set to connect more major cities

The paper has been a staunch supporter of Brexit, from its inception to the present day. They have lauded every imaginary benefit, while chastising those who have spoken out against the Vote Leave campaign. Opponents have been branded as ‘Project Fear’ agents.

Well, ‘Project Reality’ may have finally caught up with the Daily Express. The network, set to introduce new train services between Rome, Munich, Milan, Paris, Venice, Barcelona and Amsterdam, will also eventually expand into Scandinavia and Iberia – as highlighted by this map:

Daily Express lash out as UK not included in EU project

One place it won’t be stretching to is Brexit Island. In what should come as a shock to no-one, EU infrastructure builds only occur in countries with EU membership. That’s as clear as day to most – but the Daily Express have labelled the move as a ‘betrayal’.

Yes, really. And although the headline has been edited to something a little more mild, screenshots last forever…

Post (or perhaps -re)war council houses often had the features described above. More space than in estates now being built with 3 bedrooms. There were 8 semis in the Suffolk village in which we used to live. The front gardens were bigger than many plots now and whenever one came onto the market they sold quickly.

flappergirl the houses may have been sold below market price but the tenants would have paid rents and they would almost certainly took ot mortgages.

Agreed, most former council houses are far superior to new builds.

I realise the tenants paid rent prior to purchasing their council homes but the rent would also have been way below market value. For example, my neighbour pays £78 a week (which includes council tax) for her very nice 2 bed council flat with front and rear garden. In our city an equivalent privately rented flat would be in the region of £1,500 a month, not including rates.

Yes, they would have had mortgages but they would have been far lower than those who bought privately. For example, a 3 bed house in 1981 in this area would have cost about £23,000. A council tenant would have paid about £9,000. It was a fantastic deal whichever way you look at it and of course Thatcher converted many Labour voters to Tories which was the whole idea.

I apologise if I used the wrong wording but you were talking about people being affected by unstructured immigration and failed by the government through lack of economic growth.

Indeed, there are many people in this category and you can (almost) understand them turning to populist rhetoric. However, the examples I gave in my post are not in that bracket. Rightly or wrongly they were in the right place at the right time and the Government set them up quite nicely thank you. Immigration has not affected them and the area we live in a solidly white and English.

Believe me, these people have not been failed and honestly have no right to feel failed. Yet they still voted for Brexit and continue to vote for a Government which, after 13 years, has failed so many others.

It gets better. Or worse. My take on it is that the night editors took exception to the headline, and changed it. leftfootforward.org/2023/12/brexit-supporting-daily-express-mocked-after-throwing-hissy-fit-at-uk-being-excluded-from-eu-rail-project/

They may have removed it from the paper proper, but they could not remove it from the aggregator: "Scheming EU leaves UK out of 'landmark' transport plans as map shows betrayal
Tim McNulty - Express - 26/12
The UK is omitted from a major trans-European transport project poised for approval by the EU Commission." www.iscaninfo.com/article/14847445/Scheming-EU-leaves-UK-out-of-%27landmark%27-transport-plans-as-map-shows-betrayal

Explanation = It’s the DAILY EXPRESS ! Not exactly teeming with Academic articles!

DaisyAnneReturns Fri 29-Dec-23 20:06:04

The opposite of academic doesn't have to be lies and distortion though suelld.

Sadly, too often true though!

I have a feeling that in is only going to get worse in 2024, sadly Fleurpepper.

Fleurpepper Sun 31-Dec-23 09:42:43

Probably. As for EU projects, be it on rail and other transport, industry, commerce, research, including environment and medical, etc, etc- surely not even the DM or the DE, or any Brexiters, can't even begin to complain, surely!

The Daily Express is rubbish. No ifs no buts. Rubbish.
