I would like to have seen stripped of her CBE rather than the her returning it, she has again being seen as "doing the right thing" when in fact she should be disgraced, she done the same when she "stepped down" from her role a CEO of the post office , she jumped before they could sack her.

cmcpne Thu 11-Jan-24 11:27:29

I agree completely.

Treelover Thu 11-Jan-24 11:34:32

what got her there? what talents made her chair of so many trusts? She is a woman of the cloth. besmirching both. Is that what protected her? this was no male capitalist bully boy...that would have been such a target.

I don't believe she's had a rush of conscience, but I might reconsider if she gives the £400K bonus she received to be shared among those whose lives she hoped to ruin.

Totally agree. She needs to feel it in her pocket.

I've been reading about this for many years now and agree with Luckygirl13, why on earth should it take a TV drama to galvanise the govt into action. So frustrating that PM and MP's are now saying what a terrible injustice etc when it seems they've been ignoring it for so long.

Grantanow Thu 11-Jan-24 12:37:44

Given the local abuse and some assaults suffered by falsely accused postmasters I think they should all be awarded honours by Lords Lieutenant in well publicised local ceremonies. The King ought to tell his staff to ensure this is done.

Bea65 Thu 11-Jan-24 12:51:58

Yes absolutely she should be forced to refund the 400K NOW angry

Nannapat1 Thu 11-Jan-24 12:52:33

She should be returning a lot more than her CBE: money for starters. As should certain other people! Unbelievable that this has gone on for years until a TV drama brought it to the attention of the general public and even now statements and proposed actions from the government are far from satisfactory.

I wonder WHO recommended her & who signed it off.

She in now chairperson for a NHS Trust as well as directorships of Morrisons and Dunelm.

Is she? OMG it never ends! The woman has done everything!

Bridie22 Thu 11-Jan-24 15:00:54

Least she could do returning her CBE, wonder if she will return any pension / retirement bonuses?

Seagull72 Thu 11-Jan-24 15:07:18

All those involved should be accountable for their actions. It’s a disgrace that she is still working for the church. Such hypocrisy. There is a group in top jobs who are there through old boy’s network and have no merit. She should give up her bonus and hopefully it will be revealed who lied and are guilty of fraudulent behaviour. Amazing how a drama can get politicians focussed.

Well, she isn't.

If you had read the post immediately below the one you quoted you would have seen that she no longer holds any of those positions.

There are other people who are named and shamed, but as far as I am aware none of them received an honour, which is what incensed people so much.

I am even more appalled by the fact that Vennells was in the final three for consideration as the Bishop of London, the third highest post in the Anglican Church, and she had never worked even as a parish priest. She was an ordained priest while C.E.O. of the Post Office, so clearly dedicated to her flock. She was favoured by Justin Welby, who had already installed her on the Church Ethical Investment Committee.
There is no shame in her whatsoever, and I do not believe we have heard the last of her misdeeds.

Mallin Thu 11-Jan-24 22:38:25

Oh dear. Didn’t you know?
She returned it months ago.
Unfortunately by post and it hasn’t arrived yet

In her case, CBE presumably stood for "Crooked Bl**dy Executive"? As some have said, the PO litany of failure on this wretched case goes back over 20 years, so a host of execs have been guilty of extreme incompetence, and taking part in a mass conspiracy. Fujitsu are even more to blame, as they KNEW they were adjusting sub-PO accounts with no audit trail, then denying what was happening.

In a right and just world, a host of people would be getting jailed for perjury and perverting the course of justice, but we don't live in such a world.

Oh, and I've just seen a report that the PO's chief investigator, answering questions at the Enquiry, said that the "technical stuff wasn't his speciality" or somesuch. You couldn't, as they say, make it up.

I'd like to know why nobody seems to have asked, with some 700 sub-PO masters and mistresses allegedly nicking tens of thousands of pounds, what were they doing with the funds, as nobody seems to have been going on several luxury cruises a years, buying umpteen new cars, investing in racehorses, etc etc?!

quite...

DrWatson, I agree absolutely with your post. When first I heard of this, my question was, as yours, so where is the "stolen cash"?
I understand that a basic tenet of fraud investigations is " follow the money" ; to where was it followed?
A local woman defrauded people via a GoFundMe scam. In court, the prosecution were able to demonstrate, via her bank accounts, money coming in and being spent (not on medical bills as she claimed, of course). What evidence was offered by the prosecution at the trial of any postmaster of their spending excess money?

Goldieoldie15 Fri 12-Jan-24 21:54:21

What should really be done is the repossession of that magnificent house she owns and the proceeds used in compensating the victims. Let her live in a car for a year or two as the victims of her total cruel incompetence were forced to do. I wonder if that kind of a bench with holes for head and arms in which a perpetrator would be locked and then pelted with whatever might be even close to adequate punishment for that revolting woman.

Callistemon21 Fri 12-Jan-24 22:23:31

Why will Ed Davey not apologise?

Regrets, was told lies, was told the Horizon system was fine.

He met Alan Bates then wrote and told him the Horizon system was working fine.

Therefore believed all these sub-postmasters and mistresses were criminals.

Regrets, regrets, regrets that he was lied to. Blah, blah blah.

But just kept refusing to say SORRY.

I could cry for this poor sole.

Did dodgy Post Office software see a man wrongly convicted of MURDER?

petra Sat 13-Jan-24 10:07:41

I don’t know why that didn’t link 🤷‍♀️

Smileless2012 Sat 13-Jan-24 11:07:54

Just googled that petra shock. So part of the prosecutions case, backed up by the Post Office whose representative gave evidence, was he was desperate to cover up the 'fact' that he'd been stealing!!! Also that he suspected his wife was having an affair.

This certainly needs looking into doesn't it.

Grantanow Fri 19-Jan-24 09:30:38

I wonder if Welby is considering suspending her licence to practice as an Anglican priest pending the outcome of the PO scandal?

MaizieD Fri 19-Jan-24 10:32:12

Grantanow

Sorry, doesn't Christianity place great value on forgiveness?

I would hope that she is receiving some intensive counselling and retraining and would, perhaps, decide to renounce her licence
