It’s just been on the news that Charles has cancer and is not taking any duties for now

The Palace has announced- public duties will be carried out by
Queen Camilla, the Prince of Wales and other members of the royal family.

Harry - this surely isn’t the time to snipe. I read the King told his children and siblings personally. It’s reported that Harry will travel to the UK to see his father. Can’t we all wish them well

Yes!

How do you get yourself checked when you can't even get a GP appointment. My friend's husband had waited months to have a scan and finally got his appointment. The day he was supposed to go, they received a phone call saying it was cancelled and they would send him a new appointment. The week after his cancelled appointment, he started being ill and died. Heart Attack.

My daughter in law's mum has been waiting for a hip replacement for 2 years, last June she received an appointment to go for the operation, when she and her daughter arrived at the hospital with her bags and appointment letter, the staff knew nothing about it and it turned out the letter had been sent by mistake. It is now the following February and our daughter in law's mum is housebound and in terrible pain. The NHS is a farce.

This is neither the time nor the place.

No one would 'toady' to the King. He wouldn't wish it.
Unkind right now, CoolCoco.

Yes, if you can't be decent, stay off the thread CoolCoco.

Well I’ve turned the news off as it’s just repeating the same old stuff. I do wish him well, I know from my own family how much a cancer diagnosis affects everyone, I don’t want this constant over discussion about every minute aspect of one persons life.

Why are you on the thread then?
You could always log off.

I’m new to gransnet. This will be my first and last post as I’ve been reading the forums for the last few days and don’t like the tone many of the comments take and I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s definitely not the site for me.
Coolcoco, I’m sad to see that you are getting barbed and sarcastic comments for your post. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions which others may or may not agree with and healthy debate with one another is great, we can all learn from debate. I don’t feel that this is a discussion, it’s more like playground bullies ganging up against someone they don’t like or agree with. I’ve noticed this trend on several threads. My mum used to say ‘if you have nothing nice to say then say nothing at all’. Some people on here would be wise to heed that advice.

Suggest you take your own Mum's advice.

Oh, the irony Helen2gs!
Anyway, it's your last post so perhaps you've gone 👋

Well said, kittylester

I have no idea what ails the King and it is his private business of course. I wish him well and am glad he’s receiving treatment right away. None of us actually know how long he has waited for diagnosis and treatment as it takes time to develop the various tests and get to a diagnosis. With my hubby (different cancer) it took from early October until the day before Xmas eve to get the full diagnosis. Tests, biopsies, MRI, nuclear scan etc etc. it’s the reality for many. I always assumed diagnosis was a more or less instant thing, it isn’t. Anyway, good luck King Charles.

It can be a very quick diagnosis with the NHS, followed by rapid treatment.
I'm sorry it took so long for your DH to get a diagnosis, Nanatoone.

I hope that a swift diagnosis in Charles's case, followed by prompt treatment, as happens with many now with the advances in treatment, will mean that he makes a good recovery.

Hear hear Marydoll if this helps someone to get tested it would be worth going public.

The king is the same age as me and should be able to retire IMO. I wouldn't swap my life for his for all the money in the world. tea in china

I am beginning to warm to King Charles. I wish him well and hope that he pulls through.
Am sure Princess Anne will do her best to help. A difficult time for the Royal family.

nanna8 Mon 05-Feb-24 22:04:45

I just heard the news ( early morning for us) I wish him well, it is difficult for him and he is a very brave man letting the public know about it. I hope his sons will support and help him- I am sure they will. I’ve always liked him, he has done it tough in many ways.

Can we leave Harry out of this, it seems to me he is a son making the effort to see his Father has had some bad health news.

Absolutely hear, hear.

Not the time or the place to speak of what YOU want from the forum.
I think the King has done the right thing in speaking out about his cancer and wish him a safe course of treatment and a full recovery. This will encourage men to go for these checks.

Callistemon21 Mon 05-Feb-24 22:30:57

Quite right, Bella23, and raising awareness can only be a good thing, both for prostate problems and for cancer awareness.

Luckygirl3 Mon 05-Feb-24 22:32:44

It is good that he has been open about all this as it might encourage others to seek treatment. Whatever our personal views on the monarchy, that has to be a good thing and uses his "celebrity" to a worthwhile purpose.

nanna8 Mon 05-Feb-24 22:36:53

See ya Helen2gs. Been nice knowing ya. 👋

Parsley3 Mon 05-Feb-24 22:37:03

We are not used to the Palace sharing personal information about the health of the monarch so well done Charles for allowing it. His heart is in the right place.
I would like to follow this thread but if it turns into an excuse for Harry bashing then I will have to hide it.

Allsorts Mon 05-Feb-24 22:54:12

I am pleased it's in the open. If it encourages men to seek help if they spot some things amiss that can only be for the good. The unpleasant posts from some, says more about them, switch channels if it bores you so much or is that too difficult.
I wish him well, it's a very worrying time for anyone getting such news. He was settling into the tole if King so well despite the efforts of his younger son. I hope there is a reconciliation now as it must have broken his heart.

Kate1949 Mon 05-Feb-24 23:12:59

Me too Allsorts . My husband's prostate cancer was diagnosed after a TV campaign. He had niggly symptoms but wouldn't have gone to the docs had he not seen the publicity. After (not very nice) treatment he is 10 years clear.

Deedaa Mon 05-Feb-24 23:51:49

Yes the King will have the advantage of early diagnosis and prompt treatment, but I am reminded of an interview I once heard with Jimmy Tarbuck. He said that when his mother was diagnosed with Cancer he realised that, for once, he couldn't just say "OK I'm Jimmy Tarbuck. How much will this cost?" Sometimes even money isn't enough.

Skye17 Mon 05-Feb-24 23:57:19

I wish King Charles a swift and complete recovery, and reconciliation with his youngest son. He has been doing a good job as king in my opinion. He also worked hard as Prince of Wales, which not all occupants of the role have done. All my best wishes to him and his family.

toscalily Tue 06-Feb-24 00:01:00

A cancer journey can be long & hard and it takes courage to be open about such a diagnosis. I wish him well.

crazyH Tue 06-Feb-24 00:10:40

All good wishes coming your way King Charles!!
For a couple of the Diana years, he wasn’t a favourite of mine. That was due mainly to my personal experiences which affected my judgement. But I have warmed to him and I actually like him.
I hope the cancer has been caught on time. 🍀

Ok to be open but can’t stand all the speculation, blathering on about who is taking over his duties etc This shouldn’t dominate the news. This is just toadying.

If he cuts back on his duties - without being open - then there will be speculation anyway. So, either way, the media and the public will hypothesise.

We are a monarchy - he is the king. Very many people support the monarchy (though I'm not a monarchist), so of course it will dominate the news. It isn't toadying to be informed about who will take over his duties.

And, if the diagnosis had not been announced, people would still speculate on his condition. It would not go unnoticed that he is under medical care. He's an intelligent man and probably decided that being open was the best option. He can't be blamed for the resultant media scrum. Nor can he be blamed for the state of the NHS.

I thought it was very sensible of him to highlight his prostate problem, for obvious reasons, and now I hope he is treated successfully for the cancer.
