Good Morning Thursday 7th May 2026
I think someone got out of the wrong side of the bed
Should he be allowed to stand for the LP in the Rochdale by-election after his remarks? Apologising doesn’t mean he doesn’t think exactly what he said.

Free speech is very different than a potential
MP expressing this kind of distorted conspiracy theory as though it’s the truth

The Jews have lived in peace in our country since the wars and I think it’s disgusting how they are made to feel in our country by a large majority of ppl who arrived here after them and now are changing our country for the worse. We welcome ppl and it feels like it’s getting kicked back in our faces no good is going to come from this and it’s going to get worse if ppl can’t have free speech without being hounded for their opinions
It doesn't sound as though you're very welcoming of "these people".
An MP must focus on the community he represents.
Not a fraction of it, or world events that he or she personally have a stake in.
Any bias should be kept in check.
I realise that is not the case for many MPs now though.
Again, I agree with you Dickens. I read all the reports at the time and (although I can't know for sure), I believe that the warnings were there, but not followed up. The conspiracy theory was that the warnings were known about but a decision was made to ignore them to give Israel an excuse for invasion. Maybe Labour has had a lucky escape because Ali doesn't sound like a person with much good judgment.

Ha ha ha! Try telling that to my MP! I don't think she even knows where her constituency is!

My MP, also a woman, does a lot for the community, sends out a newsletter to inform people, wonder how many people don't bother to read it, then complain she never does anything. Quite a few knowing this town.

Well said.
But if someone is standing as an MP do they not say what they stand for? And if a large section of the community is discussing and saying something shouldn't the candidate at least have views on that subject? And whatever those views are providing they do not break the law or attack anyone shouldn't he at least be able to express his views?
He knew! Israel deliberately ignored info of a forth coming attack by Hamas?
I agree with you entirely. I am also concerned with the apparent conflation of Zionism with Judaism. Any concerns which are voiced against Netanyahu and the Israeli right-wingers actions are not anti-Semitic per se. I have many Jewish friends who are also opposed to what is going on in Gaza as well as Israel’s actions in general including the West Bank.
I think prospective MPs should say exactly what they stand for during the selection process for candidates, rather than leaving it until they have been chosen. I also don’t think the selection of candidates should be left entirely to local party members, because MPs are intended to represent the electorate, not local activists in the party.
Sorry my post above was in response to HousePlantQueen. First time posting, obviously not yet skilled up!
I've been listening to the West–Eastern Divan Orchestra over the last few days (co-founded by Daniel Barenboim and Edward Said in 1999).
The musicians are from Egyptian, Iranian, Israeli, Jordanian, Lebanese, Palestinian, Syrian and Hispanic backgrounds.
Edward Said is deceased, and not everyone admires Barenboim (and not everyone is a fan of classical music). But he brought together the above musicians from varying backgrounds and cultures because he believes, fundamentally, that what (or should?) unite us is our humanity.
It has long been my belief that the far left have a problem with Jews and this article says it better than I can
Why the left has a problem with antisemitism

I hope it opens and that I have managed to defeat the paywall
I've not seen the actual words used by the candidate but if correct then it is awful. What I do get upset about is the view that if you are against Israel keep bombing civilians then you are guilty of antisemitism . Decrying the killing of babies is not anti Jewish.

Ironically, Louise Ellwood partly supported Khan, saying that he had always supported her when she received anti-semitic abuse.
Sorry, I meant Ali.
🤔 I'm not sure I followed any of this.
Did a Rochdale Councillor come out in support of an MP's wife when she received anti-Semitic abuse? Do they know each other?
Do you have a link, please.
Callistemon yes they know each other. Louise had his support re anti semitic abuse she had.
Ordinary girl - yes he used the words. No one here or anywhere says it’s antisemitic to ‘decry the killing of babies’
A ti Semitic conspiracy theories are the concern
Thank you Annie1
Do not forget that Tobias Ellwood's brother was killed in a Islamic terrorist attack.
I would have thought it was obvious he abhors terrorism of any kind.

Well, I'm confused.
I thought Tobias Ellwood's wife was not called Louise.

I still think this is misinformation.

What a lot of out dated shite. No one I know who supports Gaza and the Palestinians, and finds the actions of Israel unacceptable, does so on the basis of out dated communist doctrines. Some of the younger people I know wouldn't have a clue about them anyway. What they do have is a strong and abiding commitment to human rights, and they have watched for many years the rights of the Palestinians being denied, and Israel controlling and dictating every aspect of their lives.
They do not support Hamas, but they understand that when there is no other way to go, people will rebel.
What we are seeing now is the ultimate failure of the international community to reign in the state of Israel, and to make it abide by international law. Perhaps one of the reasons for this failure is the inability of some to accept that criticism of Israel, and support for Palestinians ,and Gaza is absolutely nothing to do with antisemitism, colonialism, or communism. It's quite simply the belief that people should not be trapped in a country under what is in effect an occupation, which denies them access to utilities, restricts their development, and controls any movement.
Apart from anything else treating people in such a way acts as recruitment for bodies like Hamas.

I agree.
Louise Ellman, a Labour peer, supported Ali. Not Tobias Elwood’s wife
