I think we can underestimate the effect that events can change the way people think. That photo of Phan Thi Kim Phúc (Napalm girl) definitely changed the way we thought about the war in Vietnam. She was also a victim of friendly fire, mistaken for North Vietnam fighters. Interestingly, Nixon doubted the authenticity of the picture (sound familiar?) but that one picture had a huge effect on the world. Is there anyone who can't remember it? She became a pretty remarkable person.

What's happening in Sudan is a civil war, which is a different situation from Gaza.

The aid convoy did everything it was supposed to do with regards informing the IDF of its movements. It was deliberately targeted.

But they're not going to eradicate Hamas! What they've done is ensure that at least one more generation of Palestinians hates them and endangers their security. Even if they clear them out of Gaza, you can be sure they'll find a way. Not only that, but Israel is losing sympathy from the allies it's going to need in the future. It's a small country with few natural resources. It needs primarily American money to defend itself. The evidence suggests that its own army isn't disciplined enough to do a good job.

I know of someone who grew up in Belfast. She went to a Catholic school so wore a Catholic uniform. She said the British soldiers used to spit at them as they walked by. She was a child.

It was Protestant Mums, Dads and other civilians who spat on Catholic kids going to school.

Oh were you there with her? She has no reason to fabricate the story. It was just said in passing. She's a lapsed Catholic with strong views on the environment. No bitterness, no condemnation just a factual statement.

My cousins who stuck it out as long as they could would tell you differentlyOreo not just soldiers spitting at them the NI police force making life difficult for CHILDREN in the "province" .They moved here mid 70's ,came over for my wedding and saw that life was much simpler....not perfect then by any means ...but easier for catholic families to survive ,get decent jobs and have little aggravation on a day to day basis .The very fact that I a catholic girl could marry a protestant boy in a church (of SCOTLAND) and have both families at the wedding and no fights was an inspiration to them.There are still pockets of deep seated bigotry here in 2024 ,its Scotlands shame .Efforts to reduce it have been fought against by unionists regularly

The entire Gaza Strip is now living in a state of acute food insecurity. But in the north, according to Oxfam, people are surviving on an average of 245 calories a day – about what you’d get from a tin of beans. The north is classified as catastrophic.

The USA has recognised that famine is now starving people to death particularly in the north.
